Chapter 143: Meeting Sir Darren

Chapter Hundred-Forty-Three – Meeting Sir Darren

Laurel waited till Ferdinand walked past the Silent River border, before she continued. Why did he walk like a slug when she had said to hurry?

The new Silent River needed a notice to enter but she’d hope to get recognized by someone and be excused.

"My sister switched packs?" she heard him ask.

Truly, Silent River looked like a pack of it’s own.

Majority of High Mountains and Silent River survivors that had huddled in Green Valleys moved here when Stefan took over Green Valleys.

"No, she came during the times we were still struggling at Green Valleys." Laurel made it sound like she didn’t actually run away.

"What did she come here for?" but he kept asking. Laurel didn’t know how to defend.

"You can ask her directly." She finalized.

The boy nodded obediently. They both heard the sound of running on a roof and looked up. The young boy on the roof stopped, staring at them curiously.

"Princess Laurel of Green Valleys, and her Beta." Laurel introduced. "We’re here to see Master Darren, please."

The boy frowned. "I would’ve been told, unless you didn’t give a notice first. You guests always miss it. And your Beta...?" he stared at Ferdinand.

Laurel clasped her hands together. "I missed the notice, but you’d let us go, right?" she flashed the boy a smile.

The boy paused, then looked away, his cheeks red. "S-Since you are Green Valleys’ Princess then, sure."

Laurel assumed he was originally from Silent River or High Mountains. "Thank you, have a nice day."

They continued till they reached the palace in the middle of Silent River. Laurel thought of surprising the household with Ferdinand’s presence but decided against it.

"Laurel."

Laurel froze, then turned to the little girl. "Ella." She remembered introducing herself as Laurel to the girl so she dropped the title, the princess didn’t mind.

Ella ran off after making her presence known. Laurel paused, expecting more then turned to knock on the door.

Frida opened, a grim expression on her face. "What?"

Laurel glanced at her brother, that got perfectly covered behind the princess. The boy didn’t show any excitement on hearing his sister’s voice. Was this family okay?

She shifted to the side and pointed him. "Your brother." She didn’t need to say it like she wouldn’t know but Laurel had the feeling she might’ve forgotten.

Frida’s expression straightened. "You found him."

Laurel inclined her ears to hear more but that was it.

Ferdinand met Frida’s gaze. "That was your duty."

The elder sister exhaled. "So the key was really with that old man? I thought dad was pulling my legs. Well, fine."

Laurel’s jaw dropped to the floor. Was this the average sibling interaction? She never had a sibling but envied Frida and Ferdinand for having each other. But was this it?

They’ve not seen each other for months and this was all they had to say? Didn’t Frida almost breakdown when she was unable to find her brother?

Laurel cleared her throat, moving into her next mission. "I’d give you two time to catch-up. Can I speak with Master Darren?"

Ferdinand frowned slightly. "I should join you to speak with Sir Darren. What should we talk about?"

"Yeah, what?" Frida looked her over. "I’d call Sir Darren. You finally got your Beta, so stop bothering me."

Laurel pinched herself. So Frida really didn’t care about being Beta? Was that her decision or her father’s?

"Speak politely to the Princess, Frida." Ferdinand scolded.

"Whatever." Frida disappeared into another room.

Laurel gulped down saliva. These siblings had lots of tension between them. Something must have happened.

She didn’t have the time nor will to settle whatever it was so she followed Frida towards Sir Darren’s direction.

Ferdinand walked behind her.

Frida opened a door leading to a garden, and left them. Laurel and Ferdinand strolled in, the boy closed the door behind him.

The princess exhaled. She hadn’t met Darren in a long time, and she’d never gotten to thank him for taking her out of the prison with his unique method.

Now, she had done something for her people, she could face him. He was the only child of an official she’d gotten close to, and who didn’t make her childhood miserable.

"You’ve grown a lot."

Her skin hair stood. He was already behind her? She slowly turned to him. "Yes, I have—"

She found his back turned to her, he faced Ferdinand who wore a frown. "Of course I’ve grown, the last time you met me was when I was a baby. I barely know you."

Darren chuckled, rubbing the boy’s head. "Indeed."

Laurel smiled, she still remembered how frustrated she felt when twelve year old Darren had accepted the fault for her sake, only to be sentenced to exile from his father.

The reason was so stupid that she forgot, but she faulted herself ever since. Darren turned to her. "And Laurel."

She stepped back. He had changed so much since she last saw him. He was ten years older from them, but the changed made her uneasy.

He looked a lot like his father but without the physical badge of ’jerkery’. "Y-Yeah... um...thank you for—"

"I should start by apologizing." Darren moved to a table, he gestured for the to seat and Ferdinand took a seat.

Apologizing? Laurel looked down. What did he do?

"Princess Laurel."

She had to look up, meeting his dark blue eyes.

"I have to apologize about the guard that poisoned you, it was to be with your consent." Darren started.

Jessika already cleared her up on that so Laurel waved it off. "I totally understand. I’m glad that I left prison and got so many opportunities to be where I am today."

Her phrasing sounded weird. She hadn’t really achieved much to use ’where I am today’.

"Alright, so why are you here today?" Darren smiled.

She had to look away. This was weird. "Um... yeah."

Ferdinand tilted his head. Didn’t she say something about exportation? He faced the confused Darren.

"Some farmers are planting, and craftsmen are making goods to sell but we haven’t figured out how to restart Green Valleys’ exportations." The boy explained.

Laurel nodded at his words. He was really useful, after all. She found her tongue and added. "Damancas and Rolling Stones Pack had already rekindled the alliance."

Damancas? Darren smirked. "That’s a big win, having such a Kingdom on your side. You did really well, Laurel."

She looked down, biting her lower lips. Compliments rarely came to her for her good doings. So this felt good.
