Chapter 139: Swords
Chapter Hundred-Thirty-Nine – Swords
They reached a small lake, with small flowers surrounding it. Baxter unconsciously smiled, picking a flower up. The breed was different from the ones he usually saw.
He paused, then dropped the flower. Why was he reacting to flowers like that idiot Sorren? Dusting his hand off, he looked ahead.
"I will wait for you here—" Valkyrie sensed a familiar scent. It was indeed Frida. "I’d cross with you."
Baxter wondered why she changed her mind but he brushed it off. Having a pretty girl cheering him wouldn’t be bad and could boost his morale.
"Sure." He stepped into the lake and saw it wasn’t deep, he placed in the other leg but was pulled down. He struggled to find his balance again.
Noticing the werewolfess didn’t go in, he stretched his hand to her. "Come, I’d help you."
Valkyrie shuddered internally. Why would she need his help to cross a lake she had crossed a million times already?
She jumped in and easily moved to the other side.
Baxter took his hand down, a smile tugging on his lips. The werewolfess at Green Valleys were terribly cold.
Valkyrie reached the other side but stayed away from the cave, she should just stay out to give the finishing blow if by any chance, Frida’s plan wasn’t enough to kill him.
She was interested in the plan in a bid to avenge her mate that died shamefully in the hands of a Lycan.
Baxter nodded at the distance Valkyrie made with the cave. "It’s best you stay far so you won’t get hurt." He smirked. "Wait for an hour so I’d walk you back. If it passes, then call a warrior to walk you back."
Was he repeating her words to him? Unlike him, she was a true member of the pack, she didn’t need any escort.
And did he think she walked him? She wanted to smack the smirk off his face, but she only exhaled.
He might not live for long so she’d soon forget he ever happened. "Sure. I’d wait here."
Baxter folded the sleeves of his cloth up as he walked in. The soul cave might not be a normal cave so he’d remember to be careful.
He got few steps in but there was no sound. His brows furrowed as he took more steps and painfully realized that he couldn’t hear his own footsteps either.
This wouldn’t be magic, but he didn’t know how to explain it. There was similar cave in Black Claws and it got called ’silent class’ and many scholars studied there, in silence.
"I guess the trick to this will be I wouldn’t know when I get sneaked upon." He said out loud.
At least, he could still hear himself.
He jerked his body backwards. A sword got stuck on the wall, right before his eyes. A black headed sword in with shiny metallic body.
Was that how it would be? He didn’t even hear a sound. If not his body moved back, the sword would have made his head its new sheath.
"Okay, okay, my senses need to be alert." He felt his wolf come to the surface to strengthen his alertness.
This test was one that needed survival, he shouldn’t underestimate the rogues that troubled his Alpha.
He sprinted to the direction the second sword came from, after dodging it. The culprit must be at that direction.
As he ran, he subtly heard the heavy pants from the rogue and the foul scent of rogues hit his nose.
"Got you!" he sped to him and slammed his head to the wall, breaking it instantly.
The rogue’s jaw fell open and his teeth were stained with blood, still Baxter pulled him back and landed a punch on his face, breaking the teeth.
The body fell limply and Baxter noticed the brain matter stained on the wall. The rogue must be a really weak one if one hit burst his brain and seeped out brain matter.
"Is that all?" he yelled in the cave, looking smug.
Then he realized, he hadn’t even seen Lady Jade. The majority of the rogues will surrounded her.
Also, as he didn’t bring the prize, he had to be careful that none of the rogues find out or they’d communicate to the ones with Lady Jade to kill her. Lady Jade was priority.
"I should be sneaky too." He mumbled, advancing deeper into the cave. The exterior looked wide but inside was slightly cramped with big rocks.
He caught the smell of rogues as he reached an open space in the cave. Within the darkness opposite him, he heard the unsheathing of sword.
Since when did rogues use sword to fight? And all the swords looked expensive and flashy.
The rogue charged at him, revealing to be a young girl. Baxter thought of going easy on the lad but the fast swing she gave above him, made him wipe the thought off.
She was skilled with a sword, a sword probably soaked with wolfsbane. And he really hated sword fights.
He dodged her next swing, then used his leg to block the next. He noticed she swung twice consecutively.
The girl pulled back and lunged at him but he bent his lower body backward, and kicked her sword up. Her grip was strong but her hand felt the brunt of the kick.
Baxter clicked his tongue on seeing the sword still in her hand. He balled his fists, ready for her next movement.
Timely, he moved aside for the sword that came at him from the back. He noticed the girl in front of him dodged it. Was the culprit behind not being conscious of her?
It also occurred to him that they could all attack him with their wolfsbane soaked swords and he’d be vulnerable but instead they came one at a time or threw the swords.
He backed away as she swung her sword again. These rogues might lack unity, and that was to his best interest.
After many more swings and turns, the girl panting became more audible. Baxter relaxed a bit. It won’t be long before he’d find an opening to finally kill her.
"Don’t stop, keep on coming to me—" There was a thrust, and he spat out blood.
His head snapped to his back, but just in time to see red hair fly back into the darkness.
Quickly, he pulled the sword behind him and used it to block the girl, in front of him, that crashed her sword on his.
What’s that sneak attack now? The rogues were finally working together? And why didn’t he sense anything before the sword got into his body?
