Chapter 138: The Test

Chapter Hundred-Thirty-Eight – The Test

What type of test were they planning?

"Alpha, is it about that—"

"Yes." Stefan interrupted Cade. "I don’t have time to handle it. You don’t and the Delta doesn’t. So let the lead warrior do it. Also it’s good exercise."

Cade exhaled. For a while, he noticed the Alpha had been in a bad mood. He couldn’t place why.

He knew Stefan wasn’t the type to vent on others but if this was an indirect vent then Baxter will be in trouble.

He placed his hand on the young man’s shoulder as encouragement, then sat down by Sigma.

"I’d take the test, Alpha." Baxter repeated confidently.

Stefan handed a file to him. "It’s not that I don’t think you can do it but we have another option, the General of warriors that served under my father."

Cade snapped his head at Stefan. Did he mean the Dark Past? If the Dark Past becomes the lead warrior, with all the rumors about him, he could rise in rebellion against him.

Baxter stared at the file in his hands. "But... I’m your first choice, right, Alpha?"

Stefan smiled. "Of course. I rather trust someone I watched grow up, with my warriors, than someone said to be sketchy. But that depends on the result of your test."

To be Beta was easily given to Cade by Sorren.

Stefan hadn’t been happy about having his second in command be a person he had never met before but learnt to trust Cade.

Sigma was trained from young by Sorren, unbeknownst to the boy, to be the next Delta so he was truly fit for it.

This time, Stefan wanted the role of Lead Warrior to be acquired with little sweat, little blood too, if fate desired.

Hearing that he was the first choice, Baxter exhaled. It’d have been boring if he got the lead warrior position so easily so he didn’t mind a test.

He looked into the file and a frown came to his face. This confused him. He was to rescue a hostage from a group of rogues who had asked for gold.

That was a typical test, but this hostage was Jade, the Alpha’s fiancée!

If this was a recent claim, that’d be all good but the information from the rogues came three days ago.

And they said they would kill the hostage if the demand wasn’t met in a week.

A week should be too much time to contemplate because Jade should be the future Luna. Why had the Alpha not gone himself to handle it? Or the Beta?

Why were they giving him like a test? He swallowed down those questions, but asked another.

"Alpha, it seems you have encountered these rogues before. You wrote here to be wary of their weapons laced in wolfsbane. Did they directly attack the pack?"

Stefan shook his head. "They were rogues that bothered us when we targeted Green Valleys Kingdom months back. Some survived and are trying to get back at us."

Rogues that bothered the Alpha? Could he really handle it? That should be why the Alpha told him to survive. Baxter gulped down saliva. "I’d do it!"

The fact those rogues tried kidnapping the future Luna of Black Claws, he’d make sure they pay for that.

"I’d bring back Lady Jade and the head of those rogues!" Baxter proclaimed, with clenched fists.

Stefan chuckled softly. "Just bring Jade, I don’t care for the heads. Bring her and return her to the prison at once."

Baxter’s fists unclenched. Prison? He slowly nodded. He’d ask those questions later, after he had made sure Lady Jade was safe.

"Alpha, I also don’t know this ’soul cave’ that the rogues keep her at. I might need Dylan to walk me."

Cade disagreed. "Dylan, doesn’t know anywhere yet. Sigma, wouldn’t you go with him?"

The Delta looked away from Cade. "I don’t care about Jade enough to help her get rescued. And if Baxter can’t handle it, then he fails."

Baxter gazed at him. Was that... encouragement? Was that his cousin’s way of encouraging him?

Also, Baxter found it questionable that Sigma said he didn’t care about Jade in front of the Alpha and the Alpha didn’t react.

"Take a local, then." Stefan suggested. "Ask the Lead Warrior of Green Valleys, or their warrior, to take you."

"Will do so. Thank you for the opportunity." Baxter bowed and walked away. He looked at the file again and exhaled.

A lot must have changed since a year ago. Maybe it was Jade that worried the Alpha like that. Bringing her back might improve the Alpha’s mood then.

He met Valkyrie still outside and smiled. "Hey, pretty."

Valkyrie scowled at his words. "Are you leaving, now?"

"On the contrary," he looked into the file before adding, "I need to go to soul cave and retrieve our Luna. I have to go with the lead warrior of your pack, I don’t know the place."

Retrieve their Luna? Didn’t he know they didn’t have one? Valkyrie gave the young man the side eyes. "You are sure you heard correctly?"

"Why, yes."

Valkyrie held her spear tightly. "I’m the lead warrior. I’d take you then, to this soul cave. It’s a private—" she shook her head. "Come."

It just occurred to her that the Luna he meant will be Lady Jade. She had almost forgotten about the bitch.

She headed out of the border and Baxter followed her.

Valkyrie also remembered that Jade was with Frida. The soul cave was privately owned by Frida’s father where he hoarded his most flashy swords.

If someone led a Lead Warrior there, it’d be Frida trying to kill one of the Lycans. Valkyrie smirked internally. She’d not interfere at all.

If the plan fail, Frida will take the burn not her.

They crossed the border and Baxter noticed the werewolfess besides him become alert. He looked around, searching for a threat.

Valkyrie only became alert because she was alone with a lead warrior lycan. Lycans ranks didn’t matter unless it’s an Alpha, Beta, or Alpha but she didn’t want to take any chances.

The only who would be dying soon will be him, not her.
