Chapter 137: Baxter
Chapter Hundred-Thirty-Seven – Baxter
Two lycans will be passing through Green Valleys to go to the palace, and Valkyrie was in charge of guarding them.
Laurel had ordered that only one warrior was needed to guard any lycan entering, not two, they weren’t her guests.
Valkyrie noticed the attitude the Black Claws warriors gave the lycans, one or both of them should be an important person. Possibly an official?
She looked at the palace. Shouldn’t all officials be in there already? Someone cleared his throat behind her. She glared at him and he flinched. "I mean, excuse me?"
"Name?"
The lycan frowned a bit. Was that necessary? "D-Dylan. With me is Lead Warrior of Black Claws, Baxter, so—"
Valkyrie clenched her sword and he stopped speaking, she turned around. "Dylan, your destination is the palace. I’d walk you. Follow me."
The young lycan nodded obediently and signaled for the one behind him to hurry up.
Dylan looked around Green Valleys, the place had changed drastically compared to when he hadn’t left.
Then, the princess just got transferred from prison to the maid quarters. Now, she had regained her position as the leader of her kingdom.
It’s just been almost two months, hadn’t it? Dylan smiled. "I guess royal people have a way to mold their own fate, not all though."
He felt a hard hand on his shoulders, his lips curved downwards as he glared at Baxter. "What is it?"
"This place didn’t look like war hit it," Baxter turned, back-walking, "And who’s the pretty lady leading us?"
Dylan smirked. "Try talking to her, and get your face hit."
Baxter raised a brow. "Werewolfesses here are that difficult, eh?"
Dylan sighed. It wasn’t about being difficult, but unlike the werewolfesses at Black Claws, the ones here had hatred and fear for Lycans.
To them, the reason they were attacked and conquered was because they were a werewolf pack.
Baxter noticed a stall and tried going towards it. A spear appeared before him, blocking him. He frowned at Valkyrie.
"You are to follow me. Please, don’t go anywhere else."
She said ’please’ while looking at him like that? Baxter exhaled, walking ahead. Valkyrie stayed behind them as it was easier to watch them from behind.
They reached the palace and Valkyrie halted Dylan. "Are you two leaving again?"
Dylan shook his head. "I’d be staying at the lead warrior’s quarters but I don’t know if the lead warrior will too."
Lead Warrior quarters? Valkyrie wondered when the lead warrior’s quarters became inside the palace. She concluded it could be a remodeled one.
"I’d wait for an hour to walk you back." She told Baxter. "If it passes and I’m gone, ask our warrior to you walk out."
Baxter scratched his neck. Did they need to walk him out? Perhaps, it was a guest treatment. He nodded. "Sure!"
Dylan ran with their belongings to their new quarters while Baxter continued inside.
His eyes widened, seeing the flowers arranged by the wall. The place looked really similar to the former palace at Black Claws.
"If only everyone was here to see this." He mouthed.
Somehow, they recovered what they lost that day, fifteen years ago. The elders that died out of sorrow would be glad to see how far they had gone.
And it seemed the King’s son did it while minimizing damage because this pack seemed bustling.
He nodded at the guards that bowed at him. He still saw familiar faces from his uncle’s warriors so many still survived. He rubbed his palm. "This will be good."
He had to do his best not to disgrace his new role or his uncle, unless the guilt will never leave him.
The guilt of being irresponsible enough to let Sigma be raised by the royal family, a non-family member.
Even if Sorren was five like him, he somehow took responsibility for Sigma while he was busy mourning the death of his last parental figure, Sigma’s father.
"This time!" he clasped his hands. "I’d have no regrets!"
He opened the study where the Alpha was supposed to be in. He froze, seeing a high table and the sole of leather shoes. "Um... Alpha?"
Stefan tilted his head to see him. "Baxter, right? Come in."
Baxter slowly walked in. Was the Alpha distressed? He looked like he hadn’t slept well for days. It’s been a year since he saw him, before he left for his revenge.
He always envied he and Sorren’s long hair and that was the reason he once kept his long.
But with the Alpha’s state, he looked like a recently divorced husband that hadn’t been taken care of himself.
Was it a relationship problem? Could it be an issue with Jade? She was still his fiancée, right?
Baxter cleared his throat, hoping it’d clear his mind as well. He made a ninety degrees bow. "Long time, Alpha. Congratulations on conquering the three... two lands."
Stefan made an ’hmm’ sound and it further worried Baxter. The Alpha felt alright, didn’t he?
The door to the study opened. "Alpha, I didn’t see Cade but Dylan is back so—" Sigma paused, on seeing him.
Baxter froze. That looked like his cousin but it couldn’t be.
The last time he saw him was a year ago when Prince Sorren insisted on taking him for the revenge plan.
It greatly worried Baxter that his weak cousin could die but seeing him now, looking really buff and muscular, it didn’t feel real. He unconsciously smiled. "Hey!"
A shiver ran down Sigma’s spine. What did ’hey!’ mean? Did he want a fight? He won’t hesitate to fight but they were before the Alpha. Didn’t he have self control?
"We are in front of the Alpha, I’d give you want you want later." He clicked his tongue and sat besides Stefan.
Baxter registered those words as ’we’d talk later’ and replied. "Okay!" Beta Cade walked in at that point.
He noticed the new person and smiled recognizing him. "Alpha, I think the new Lead Warrior is here now."
"Who said he was the new Lead Warrior?"
Baxter and Cade froze, their eyes on Stefan who spoke.
The Alpha sat up, looking at the book in front of him. "Baxter, one of my officials doesn’t support your election as lead warrior so you’d have to prove yourself to us."
Baxter frowned. Could it be Sorren? That Prince really disliked him for no reason. "I’d take your test then, Alpha."
Beta Cade glanced at Sigma. He knew he’d be the only one to disagree. Sorren didn’t care who was whatever.
"Good. And make sure you survive." Stefan forced a smile. "Because this test doesn’t promise your survival."
Cade looked from the Alpha to Sigma and then at Baxter, who looked tensed. What type of test were they planning?
