Chapter 129: The Future Beta
Chapter Hundred-Twenty-Nine – The Future Beta
With how healthy Ferdinand looked, Laurel was sure he had been hidden there with supplies. "Wait."
The boy paused.
"Why is she here, hungry and dying, when I’m sure you obviously had a way to help her?" Laurel asked.
Lisa tended to the woman, trying to put water in her mouth, while overlooking the stench coming from her.
She wondered how the princess was able to cope with the stench so tried to cope with it too.
"Well, we had to feed her son. So I picked the most useful of them." Ferdinand replied. "She was told to leave but she stayed there. In that case—"
"Is that really your excuse?" Laurel shouted. "You needed to feed either she or her son? Are they animals? Couldn’t you—"
She still spoke when Ferdinand began walking away.
"I’m still talking to you—"
"I’m done listening." He shut her up. "We’ll talk when my servants are out. I hope that’s okay with you, Princess."
Laurel gritted her teeth but let it slide. The sooner all the servants are out the better, they needed the sunlight.
She stayed there till she heard footsteps coming out of the place. She waited for them worriedly.
She expected poorly dressed sickly wolves but instead healthy werewolfs and werewolfesses strode out of the dark chamber. Laurel was dumbstruck.
"Ah, Princess Laurel?" one of them paused in front of her, a mocking expression came to her face. "You look even thinner than when I last saw you."
Laurel found her tongue again. Of course, the household of the Beta were her greatest nemesis while in the palace. Even maids spoke to her like she was trash.
She turned to the woman on the ground, who struggled to open her mouth and get fed. Why did they leave her here if they ate bountifully. Wasn’t that too cruel?
She watched them walk to the exit, in a line. Their young master, Ferdinand, wasn’t in front of them so she stayed back till he was out.
"Hey, Princess Laurel! Aren’t I speaking with you!" the maid came in front of her. "Why are you ignor—"
The maid felt a hand rush to her neck, then her legs wriggled as her body left the ground. Laurel glared at the body she pinned to the wall with disdain.
"I can’t even remember your damn name. Stop yapping in my ears and get out." Her voice was low. "Don’t you see this sorry woman here? Does she need your noise?"
The maids scratched her arm, trying to frer herself. She tried making out some words but her throat felt sour. "Y...You b-bitch." She forced some words out.
Bitch? Laurel tossed to the ground, making sure her head slammed the hard floor. Lisa acted like she didn’t see it while trying to feed the woman.
"Lisa."
Lisa looked at the Princess.
"Let the maid take care of the woman." Laurel told her, picking the maid by the neck again and dragging her to the weak woman. "Feed her or you’d be fed to dogs."
The girl scratched at her arm again but got slapped on the face with a plate, some of its content spilled on her face. She shifted her teary gaze to Lisa.
"Princess said you should feed her." Lisa pushed the plate to her. "So feed her." She held her nose. "I’m out."
Laurel released the maid and she fell, breathing quickly. She held unto the plate with shaky hands. "I-I’d do it."
"Of course, you will." Laurel pushed her head towards the woman, then turned away from her, her eyes shifting to the dark chamber. Where was that Ferdinand?
She heard his footsteps. He appeared from the dark, wearing a wide grin. It almost scared Laurel. "What is it?"
"You’ve changed, Princess Laurel." He spoke, with his grin. "That’s my most annoying servant which you tamed with not words but actions. I highly respect you now."
He had been watching her? Laurel exhaled. With the speed she saw from him earlier, and the aura she sensed he had, he must have been trained to be the future Beta.
Which meant, this young wolf was of higher rank than she was at twelve. He was probably Delta ranked or already Beta. He did say so, but Laurel assumed it’d be Frida.
"Frida looked unmotivated to do anything, maybe she didn’t care about being Beta." Elma chirped in.
Laurel didn’t think it’d be so. Also, why didn’t her father protect her in the grand hall as well?
And why didn’t she know about the key? She had been looking for her brother.
But Laurel brushed those thoughts aside, if it’s a family issue, it’s not her business.
"Well, after the raid and so many losses, I had to adjust to the times. I hope you wouldn’t give me trouble, Young Master Ferdinand." She stared down at him.
Surprisingly, he made a ninety degrees bow. "Of course Princess, I’d do my best to support you and repair all damages our Kingdom faced. I am your Beta, after all."
That sounded sketchy as hell but Laurel didn’t complain. If he was anything like his father, which he probably was, she’d have to be careful with him.
"Take the woman out." She told the maid.
The girl hesitated then nodded. "Yes... Princess."
Laurel walked out of the hall, clenching the candle light in her hands. More than twenty people had been in here. She stopped moving out.
"Are they still supplies in there?" she asked Ferdinand, walking behind her. "How big is it?"
"Yes, it is enough to feed hundred men for thirty days, at least." Ferdinand replied. "Should it be gotten out?"
If it was that plentiful, why did he let this woman starve? Laurel tried to let it go. "It should remain there, for urgency purposes."
"If you say so, Princess Laurel."
At the entrance, the crowd of pack members that had been watching her had dispersed, some engaged with the servants that walked out.
Laurel didn’t know how to feel about it.
They were barely any use to her but then, they were still her people she should protect and thankfully, that woman will survive.
"Is he one of our captors?"
Laurel turned to Ferdinand, then followed his line of sight.
She sighted Cade, standing with Jessika who seemed to be shivering. "Yes, he is. Be specially careful with him."
Ferdinand looked away from at Cade. "I plan to be."
