Chapter 107: Ambush
Chapter Hundred-Seven – Ambush
Laurel sighted the smoke coming from the pack. Did Beta Cade throw a huge barbecue feast after they left?
Or by any chance, was it to celebrate Black Claws officially officially joining High Moon Kingdom?
The horse became restless and the carriage shook. It was night already, and it’s probably tired. Laurel thought.
They’d get to the pack in thirty minutes, they were at the swirling valleys around it. Fog covered the dark forest and not even animal sounds could be heard.
Stefan squinted his eyes to see past the thick dark fog. It was weird that his wolf vision couldn’t see through it. Was it an unnatural fog? "Brace yourselves, something is in—"
There was a smelling wrapped ball thrown into the carriage. The effects hit immediately but Sorren threw it out. Bebe fell on Laurel, while Laurel tried to resist.
Were rogues really attacking them few miles away from Black Claws? She noticed Sorren climb out of the carriage, unaffected by the smelling ball.
Laurel couldn’t feel Stefan up there anymore. She shook her head vigorously to clear her mind before climbing out. But she stood there, turning to the passed out Bebe.
If she took the charm off her, she’d be like a rogue in the middle of the forest, the other rogues might kill her.
Leaving the charm behind, she entered the fog. "Elma, all I can use here is your sense of smell."
"That’s why you should’ve kept your butt in the carriage." Elma came closer to the surface. "This is sprayed gas."
It did look familiar. Sprayed gas, a signature move by Green Valleys warriors when they were about to ambush.
"Is there a reason they ambushed us?"
Laurel searched around, she couldn’t sense a wolf. She already returned so what need was the ambush?
They shouldn’t do anything that’d put them in Stefan’s bad book or the release of their pack would take longer.
Just then, she heard another ball get thrown inside the carriage. She knew it got inside the carriage because there was a sound of something hitting wood.
Laurel also realized by the sound that she hadn’t gone far away. The had fog tricked her to think she was already in the heart of it.
Laurel ran back to the carriage, her senses sharpening. At the rate, Sorren and Stefan could get lost in the fog. They wouldn’t be able to see anything till it cleared.
"Shit!" someone cursed. "That idiot is not even here."
Laurel paused. Frida? She hurried again. "Frida!"
Frida tensed up before realizing who owned the voice. Since when did Laurel speak so firmly?
Frida turned to Laurel. Her eyes flickered, confused on the clothes Laurel wore. Didn’t she go with the Alpha and his brother to be their maid?
Why did she dress like a princess? And the rogue in the carriage that was dressed as nobility too. What in the hell were they doing?
"We came to take you away from these Lycans. You’d be killed if you return." Frida said it with less resolve than she planned to.
If the Lycans were letting Laurel dress like that, then maybe they wouldn’t jump to killing her. Just how much changed the one month she was away?
"I don’t want to follow you. And to where will I go with you to? What happened?" Laurel asked with an irritated tone.
The Beta’s daughter frowned on her tone. "Look, little scum, you have no right to use that tone on me—"
"Frida!" Laurel raised her voice. "You ambushed our carriage, if you keep yapping without saying what exactly you came for, those Lycans will return and kill you!"
Frida flinched, staring dreadfully at the princess. Did she say ’our carriage’? She had paired herself with the Lycans that destroyed their land?
"I don’t even know you anymore." Frida huffed.
"You never did." Laurel stated. "Tell me what’s going—" "Many warriors attacked Black Claws to get back our land." Frida cut her short. "They failed. They all died."
Laurel’s shoulders slumped. "Eh...?" They attacked? And all died? All of them? Her fists slowly clenched.
"I know right. Those Lycans were stronger than we thought." Frida wiped her sweaty forehead.
A resounding slap landed on her face, slamming her to the carriage, she slid to the ground. Laurel stood above her, glaring down at her.
"How could you have let them fight, Frida! How could you let that happen! Why didn’t you warn them about Beta Cade! You know how he is! You lived with him! And Darren? If you are so stupid that you couldn’t stop your warriors from marching to their timely death, how did Darren not warn them about the dangers! What’s wrong with all of you!" Laurel kept on screaming.
Frida tried to regulate her breathing, her cheeks still stung from the impact of the slap. Laurel had grown stronger and cheekier.
Laurel wiped the tears rolling down her eyes.
She needed to calm herself or she’d have another mental breakdown. Thrice in one week. The worst week of her life.
"Get up, Frida. Take me to Darren. You’re here to pick me, right? Take me to Darren immediately!"
Frida flinched on hearing her scream. She left the ground, touching her face.
Laurel carried Bebe from the carriage on her back.
"Laurel."
The princess turned to Frida.
"Never touch me again." Frida turned to her. "I mean it."
Laurel looked into her cold eyes, a daring smirk came to her face. Was she angry yet didn’t dare fight back? She was beginning to know her place, wasn’t she?
"Frida. Never give me a reason to touch you again. I mean it. You act like it’s fun touching someone like you."
Frida’s breathing hitched, the princess strolled past her, carrying Bebe. "Take me to Darren. I have to correct the mess you made. Goddess! You can’t do anything right."
The Beta’s daughter clenched her fist, her claws tearing into her skin at the force. Then she released them, and walked behind Laurel.
