Chapter 118: Emma’s Authority Gets a Real Test

This was Emma’s time to shine and to blush just a little bit with all the praise being heaped upon her by Zach.

They were getting ready for a coffee break when Zach’s phone beeped—it was a message from Claude. "Get over to the center because it won’t be long. Harry is in full labor." Zack was out the door in just a second.

While they were sitting there just going over the plans and making some fine-tuned adjustments, Robbie’s phone started beeping. It was Lex—his dad was in labor and Robbie needed to come soon before he missed the main event. This was going to be a fast delivery.

Robbie almost knocked the door off the hinges leaving the office. "Okay, my grandson’s being born so I have to go," Ben remarked. "Don’t go anywhere anybody, keep on going over the plans. Roy will show anything you need. Everybody can stay right here—Emma’s going to lead you home. She’s perfect for the job, she’s got what it takes to get it done, because this is her job. I’ll be back after we welcome him into the world." Ben headed out to the delivery room.

Emma didn’t take no time to get the ball rolling; everyone was on the same page as she went step by step on the plans. Tim was really amazed at Emma and how she commanded authority. She got her point across without being boastful or rude. If something needed to be done a different way, she didn’t say this is the way to do it—she explained why it should be done that way for the best of the job and everybody working it so that the trades worked harmoniously.

Roy was quite impressed with her also. Ben could take a few notes from her playbook and it wouldn’t hurt Robbie to learn either, but hey, they were in charge—he wasn’t.

As the meeting was going on, it was suddenly interrupted by the sounds of ripping, crashing metal in a thunderous boom. Ben ran out of the office just to see the whole eastern side of the warehouse falling in and spilling materials everywhere. Smoke and debris and dust came boiling out the overhead doors in the front. Men were running every which direction. Roy, Tim and Emma looked on in horror as people came staggering out of the warehouse bleeding.

Tim rushed toward the warehouse when Emma grabbed him by his arm. "Tim, no! Let other people take care of it. You cannot endanger yourself or your children’s lives—stay back." Emma blocked his way. As smaller as she was compared to his height, she pushed back against Tim.

Everyone came rushing to the scene, there was still dust bellowing out of the front doors of the main warehouse. Zack and Robbie came driving up in the buggy and jumped out as soon as it slowed down enough to stop. Ed and Carter were there in seconds. Ed was on the phone to the hospital telling them to get both units in the air with full medical crews to the Z1 ranch for a major disaster.

Emma had Tim sit down and take a deep breath. Soon workers were bringing bodies out—there were a lot of broken bones and banged up people, and there were a few that were even deceased. Roy took the time to list out and compared them to the names of the survivors and the deceased to find out how many people were still missing or buried up under the rubble.

Zack was beside himself. "What the hell happened?"

Paul, covered in dirt and dust and debris himself, reported that one of the cables from the new overhead cranes snapped and lost his entire load, bringing down all the shelving on the entire eastern wall. There were still plenty of people unaccounted for.

After two hours, there were still six people unaccounted for. His hand shakily gave the list to Zach. The first name was Jared. Zack walked over to Emma and Tim and he kneeled down.

"Son, Jared is still inside somewhere," he said gently. "We’re going to work as fast as we can to try to find him and the other five." It was all that Ed, Robbie, Hanz and Ty could do to restrain him. Lex gave him an injection to help calm him but not enough to harm the babies.

For the next four hours, debris was being lifted. It was all hands available on the ranch as they moved everything—all the scaffolding, all the shelving—and one by one bodies were found. After the fourth was found, Zack was starting to give up hope.

Every time someone walked out, Tim held his breath. One of the workers came running out—they had located Jared. He was trapped under two steel beams and scaffolding material. Zack, Ben and Ed rushed into the building. It took another hour and a half before they had enough debris removed to get to Jared. One of the slim young guys was able to crawl through the wreckage to where Jared was trapped.

He had a video phone and was reporting back to Lex all the information about Jared. He was unconscious but he was breathing, but from the way things looked, it wasn’t good. The crew switched tactics and slowly started to uncover the area where Jared was located. As a pathway was made, Lex was able to get some vitals and check him. He was still unconscious—he had a head injury and a whole lot of broken bones.

Lex was unable to find any heartbeat at all from the baby. He didn’t want to tell his uncle Tim any of this and stress him out anymore than what he was due to his pregnancy with twins.

Zack got the news that both the boys were born and they were fine, as was Harry, who told Zack not to worry but to help Jared. Luther had delivered his son also and they were doing fine. It was a joyful but yet sad day on the Z1.

Lex was able to weasel in a backboard and strap Jared to it and placed a collar around his neck. There was a lot of blood—he was bleeding from several places. Emma had to stabilize Tim as he tried to stand, a little woozy from the drugs that was given to him. They brought Jared out, stopping long enough for Tim to kiss his cheek, and then he was loaded on the transport jumper.

As the jumper took off from the scene, it went full blast headed to Hawthorne Memorial. Ed, Carter, Zack and Tim boarded the private jumper. Lex was on the medical jumper. "Emma, would you come since you had been great comfort to Tim during this crisis?" Zack asked. "Leo would understand." Emma climbed on board and sat beside Tim, holding his hand as he laid his head on her shoulder and cried.
