Chapter 119: The Nun Who Sees All the Babies

Tim turned to his father and wrapped his arms around him, started to sob. Zack stroked his son’s hair and hugged him as he told him, "Jared’s a lot tougher than what you give him credit for, young man. He survived no telling how many tons of twisted metal and steel. He’s going to be okay—don’t worry about it, he’ll be just fine."

"You don’t think the baby survived, do you father?" Tim looked at his father with anguish in his eyes.

"We can only pray for the best outcome, Tim. We can only put our faith ahead of us and pray for the best."

Jared was taken directly to OR right along with Lex following. He was going to be the advisor for Genmen physiology and bodily functions for the surgical team that would operate on Jared and the baby.

It would take another six hours in the OR before anything was known. Jared’s body finally gave in and he lost the baby. Hard-core seasoned nurses and doctors attending to Jared were heartbroken as the head nurse carefully wrapped the infant’s body in a baby blanket, she placed a small preemie cap upon his head. She was in awe that a child at this age was so perfectly developed. She had no idea that Genmen children developed very rapidly within the womb at a very early age and then spent the rest of their seven months growing in size.

Lex came out to the waiting area and asked his grandfather to please help Tim to come back so that he could spend time with his son. Tim took a seat in the OR hallway, the nurse brought the small child and placed it wrapped in a blanket into his hands.

"I’m so sorry, young man. We did all we could but it was just too much for him," she said gently. "I’ll leave you to your son and I need to go back in and help that other young man that’s fighting right now for his life." Tim thanked the nurse for all that she had done for his son. Tim brought the boy to his cheek and wept. After about 30 minutes, Zack told them that it was time to say goodbye. "But first, Tim, you need to name his son."

"Father, Jared and I had already talked and we were going to name him Timothy Zachary Spinelli II, and I’m going to honor his wishes." A Nun who was in the hospital knelt down and blessed the child.

"This little angel will now be watched over by others because he has a special job beside the father of all," she said softly.

She took him back to the area and waited on someone to take the child and prep the young thing for his upcoming journey.

Tim lost it. He was inconsolable, he was so emotional that the drugs could do him no good anymore. This was going to take a lot of time and a lot hinged upon Jared’s full recovery.

Tim went back to that waiting room and sat down, he was surrounded by family as they waited for any news on Jared.

Three more hours lapsed when Lex came out with another doctor—Dr. Walt Stafford it was.

Walt sat beside Tim and took his hand within his. "Young man, Jared will take time but he will mend. Since he is a pure blood, he will mend faster than most physically, but the emotional scars that he will have from losing this child this early will take even more time."

He continued his assessment. "His left leg was broken in four places—we have banded and stabilized it so it can heal. His left hip was crushed and will have pins in it, he had ribs cracked on the left-hand side, his left arm was broken in three places and his shoulder blade was broken. That’s all I can do for the bones. Now there were some internal injuries too and they addressed everything that they could. I’m going to tell you right now, I don’t know if he will ever be able to have a child again, but like anything else, Genmen can survive because they’re built that way—tough and heal like no others."

"Now he’s going to be in recovery for a long time. You and Zack can walk back and see him and Ed can go with y’all to help you, but realize this is stressful. You’re pregnant and in your third month—this is stressful on you and the babies. So you’re not going to be able to stay with Jared very long because I want you to lay down and get some rest. That’s this doctor’s orders, do you understand me young man?"

Tim was exhausted. He told Walt that he understood everything that he said and that if he let any harm come to the babies that he was carrying, it would be harder on Jared, so he promised to take care.

They all walked back to the recovery area. Tim was shaken when he saw Jared for the first time—his face was black and blue bruised, he had bandages and cast everywhere. He gently stroked Jared’s face and leaned down and kissed him on his forehead. Jared’s eyes fluttered and he softly spoke.

"I’m sorry. I promise I’ll be more careful next time but I didn’t know the crane was going to break. I already know about the baby because he’s no longer speaking to me. He had to go home without us."

"Take care and rest and I’ll see you in a little while," Tim told Jared. "I’m taking care of the other babies right now. We’re still going to be a family together no matter what. I love you."

"I love you too, take care," Jared groggily smiled and whispered, and he drifted off to sleep.

Ed and Zack helped Tim back to the waiting room. Carter and Emma were right there and helped him sit down and wrapped their arms around him to comfort him. One of the nurses entered the room and told Ed that they had three rooms available—they were ready for the family so that they could get a little bit of rest. If anyone needed anything, all they need to do was to let the staff know and it was theirs.

Tim woke up about five hours later and eased out of the room to the nurse’s station.

"May I see Jared if possible?" Tim walked up to the nurse in charge and spoke. The same Nun that was there earlier was sitting nearby and smiled. "I’ll take you to go see him. He’s better now but he still has a long way to go." Tim thanked her and followed.

Sister Agatha opened the door to Jared’s room and Tim eased inside; he took a seat beside the bed. He noticed that Jared had something clutched in his right arm and hand. Not wanting to disturb Jared, he gently lifted it up. It was a photo in a frame of their son and inscribed on the photo was the phrase: "To my Father and Dad, I will always love you. Your Little Angel, Timothy."

Tim laid his head down on the edge of the bed and began to quietly cry. He felt a hand touch his hair and gently stroke it. He looked up into Jared’s beautiful face, and smiled at him.

"It’s okay, Tim. We’ll try again and according to our Angel, we will welcome his little sister into our family next year."

Sister Agatha touched Tim’s shoulder. "Okay, it’s time to go. He needs his rest, plus so do you for the twins because you’re exhausted." Tim looked at her and said, "How do you know that I am with children and twins at that?"

"Because my dear child, the little Angel told me to make sure that his Father got his rest for his twin brothers that he carried," she replied with a knowing smile. "Let’s go back so you can get some rest."
