Chapter 761
Chapter 761: Chapter 761
Yang Fan felt a bit exhausted, unsure of how to explain to the old doctor what he had just been through.
For ordinary people, this kind of thing was something entirely beyond their imagination.
Anyway, before this, Yang Fan had only occasionally heard rumors about such events.
He had never seen one with his own eyes.
Since entering this line of work, it felt like he’d opened some kind of cursed door, encountering one bizarre incident after another.
And at an incredibly high frequency.
"Doc, just interpret it however you want..." Yang Fan said weakly.
If he couldn’t explain it, he might as well let the doctor decide what was what.
The old doctor sighed thoughtfully, "Young people these days... their actions are far too reckless. This isn’t just a fight; this was someone actively trying to take your life. Young man, forgive me for being blunt, but while it’s fine to be carefree when you’re young, there must be some moral restraint. Otherwise, crossing the wrong kind of person can lead to serious trouble."
"I recall reading somewhere that most of the violent crimes these days are crimes of passion. And what are crimes of passion, if not situations exactly like yours?"
"It’s normal to have a few romances, especially in today’s society; even people my age have come to accept that. But adultery? That’s absolutely unacceptable—especially with a married woman. That’s been a societal taboo for centuries."
Yang Fan nodded silently, humbly accepting the advice.
The old doctor was in high spirits and seemed to have a passion for helping people.
He started talking about his own youthful experiences, as well as stories about a few of his friends.
Basically, he used his personal experiences to explain the matter to Yang Fan in great detail, leaving no ambiguity.
Yang Fan didn’t dare interrupt him, listening honestly and attentively.
Though the old doctor was quite talkative, it wasn’t without its benefits.
After being lectured like that, Yang Fan noticed his pain had diminished quite a bit.
Following a good dose of moral education and having his wounds treated, Yang Fan left the clinic, wrapped up like a mummy.
Most of his injuries were on his upper body, with fewer on his lower body.
He hailed a cab and, on the way to the farm restaurant, called Wang Daqiang.
There was no telling if that guy had actually listened to him.
The phone buzzed for a long time without anyone picking up.
Yang Fan called three times in a row, but the result was the same—no answer.
This sent his heart sinking straight into his stomach.
"That bastard Old Wang—why the hell won’t he listen to advice?!"
Yang Fan cursed angrily, then turned to Ji Dong’er. "Miss Dong’er, what happens to people affected by that strange woman?"
Ji Dong’er glanced at the driver in front and then leaned in close, speaking quietly into Yang Fan’s ear, "They lose their soul."
"That ghostly thing manipulates people by feeding on their spirit. Those under her control lose their three hun and seven po, leaving only four fragments to support the body. I observed earlier; this is her method for strengthening herself and manipulating puppets."
"With this connection, those she controls become extensions of her being. It’s like a tree extending its roots outward—each additional victim bolsters her power a little more."
Yang Fan’s brows furrowed tightly, "Can they be saved?"
"That... I’m not sure," Ji Dong’er said, shaking her head. "If she hasn’t refined their souls, they should still be savable, but if she already has, it may be too late..."
"Even if someone breaks free from her control, they would end up an empty shell, completely dull-witted."
Taking a deep breath, Yang Fan stubbornly dialed Wang Daqiang’s number again.
But it still wouldn’t connect.
"That son of a bitch! If only he’d listened to me for once, it wouldn’t have come to this!" Yang Fan cursed under his breath, then immediately called Mr. Fan.
"Master, something’s gone wrong."
"If you mean the issue at the urban village, I already know," Mr. Fan replied gravely.
"Master, you’re already there?" Yang Fan asked.
"Yes," Mr. Fan responded in a somber tone. "We’ve searched all of Li Mountain but haven’t found the old locust tree spirit’s incarnation. Apparently, it slipped into the city unnoticed. This isn’t something you can interfere in—stay out of it."
"Master, I’d love to stay out of it, but I walked right into it! If Miss Dong’er hadn’t shown up just now, you’d have lost your only disciple." Yang Fan exclaimed.
"I helped that idiot Old Wang recover some money. On my way out, I noticed the woman acting strangely. Turns out, she was the old locust tree’s spirit in disguise—it tried to eat me!"
Mr. Fan remained silent for a long while before letting out a helpless sigh, "You really do have the worst luck..."
Then after a pause, he asked, "Are you okay?"
"Barely hanging on. My skin’s practically peeled off—I’ll have to lay low for a while," Yang Fan replied weakly.
"Then rest up. Someone else will take care of this," Mr. Fan said.
"Master, Old Wang is still trapped in there," Yang Fan said urgently.
Mr. Fan went quiet for a moment. "I see."
With that, the call ended.
Yang Fan gripped his phone tightly and muttered, "Let’s hope it’s not too late..."
Ji Dong’er comforted him gently from the side, "Don’t worry, big brother—it’ll be okay. That thing might be powerful, but it’s no match for your master. Mr. Fan is the strongest monk I’ve ever met; he’ll definitely figure something out."
"Plus, now that Mr. Fan is already there, that spirit won’t have time to refine those souls. As long as that hasn’t happened yet, there’s still hope to save them."
Yang Fan knew Ji Dong’er was trying to console him.
But no matter how anxious he was, things had already escalated to this point. Worrying further would do no good. Nodding, he then asked, "Miss Dong’er, how big is the power gap between you and that strange woman?"
"I can’t see her strength clearly, so it’s hard to say," Ji Dong’er replied.
"Miss Dong’er, can I ask you for one favor?" Yang Fan asked earnestly.
Ji Dong’er cut him off, "Big brother, let me drop you off first, and then I’ll go help."
"...Thank you."
Yang Fan didn’t have a clear understanding of Mr. Fan or Ji Dong’er’s capabilities.
But the more help they had, the better their odds would be.
The farm restaurant came into view.
As the taxi pulled up to the entrance, Yang Fan noticed Fan Sisi and Yun Miaoyi walking toward him, arms full of shopping bags, laughing and chatting away.
"Fanzi?!"
Fan Sisi cried out in shock, rushing over to support the mummy-like Yang Fan. "What happened to you?!"
"Long story short, I ran into a ghost," Yang Fan said, exasperated.
"What... how bad was it this time to leave you looking like this?" Fan Sisi said, her voice full of alarm.
