Chapter 597: Changed Her Mind

Luo Huian smiled before saying sweetly, "I know. He was the one who sent me here, asking me to bring some things that the children might need at the hospital."

When the mers heard Luo Huian’s words, they exchanged a look with one another. Their jealousy started to stew even higher as they turned to look at Luo Huian, and one of them said in a sour tone, "He lives on the fourth floor. Apartment five zero eight."

Luo Huian turned around and bowed her head, saying, "Thank you," before heading upstairs. When she was gone, everyone turned to discuss the appearance of the woman in their alley.

"Isn’t she a bit too beautiful?" One of the mers said with a frown on his face. "Just what did she see in Master Ye to befriend him?"

"Maybe he is good in bed," said another mer with a hint of amusement and mockery in his tone. "One can never be sure. Now that he is a widower, why would he bother to keep his legs tucked and close?"

"Are you sure about that?" Another mer asked in a conspiratorial tone. He looked around and then whispered, "I thought he was rather nice."

"Pfft. If he were nice, how could the child get injured? He could have easily cooked something for them, but no, he left them alone and went to look for a job. That is if he went to look for one."

"...Hah? Do you mean to say that Ye Jinglan is looking for a mistress?"

"If not?"

Luo Huian could listen to almost everything that the mers were saying. Her lips curled up in a smile when she heard the envious and judgemental tone of the mers. She knew that her appearance was going to have this effect on these mers. The reason these mers were so kind to Ye Jinglan was not because they were kinder than others or could understand his plight.

The reason they were so kind was that Ye Jinglan was worse off than they were. Now that the mer was one up on them, they couldn’t withstand it. How could they stomach it? Someone who was far worse than them was now with a woman they could only dream of.

Though the idea of sleeping with someone like Ye Jinglan made her skin crawl, Luo Huian was willing to let the misunderstanding deepen as long as she could make that mer get ostracised.

"Pathetic humans," Luo Huian muttered as she came to a stop in front of the apartment where Ye Jinglan lived. Her eyes glimmered slightly as she looked at the door. Even when she had not entered the apartment, she could smell the thick scent of the aura of gloom.

Pursing her lips, she reached out and touched the knob of the door, which opened with a click.

"Sweet," Luo Huian’s smile widened as the door opened with a creaking sound. Ignoring the dust that was piled up on the floor, she walked into the apartment. Her eyes glimmered as she turned her head and looked at the branded clothes that were littered on the floor.

And as she turned her head to the right, she could see the door of a small room slightly open. Her eyes flickered, and Luo Huian walked over as she raised her foot and kicked the door open. The door rattled against the wall, but its creaking stopped when Luo Huian walked past it.

With her arms crossed, she quickly examined the room and sneered, "Branded clothes, multiple pieces of jewellery. Chocolates and snacks... he is having a really tough time."

She then turned to take another look at the small apartment. However, Luo Huian didn’t find the room of the two children. She tilted her head to one side and mused, "If there is no room, then where do the kids stay?"

As soon as she finished speaking, the sound of something falling from the small storage room echoed in the silent house. Luo Huian arched his brow and walked to the door, which was even more run-down. She leaned down and opened the door, the knob turning at the slightest touch of her fingers.

Luo Huian pulled open the door, and in came the view of the smallest room that she had ever seen in her human life. She glanced down at the mattress that had a thin blanket on it with a toy that seemed to be so old that it was half torn. Luo Huian arched his brow and then clicked a picture of the room.

Once she was done, Luo Huian was about to turn around and leave, but then her gaze fell on the small diary that was sitting in the corner of the room. Her curiosity got the best of her as she snatched the diary up from the floor, and as she did that, her eyes met the nail scratches on the inside of the door.

She was quite familiar with these scratches, as she had once made them with her own hands when she was locked up in the heavenly cave without any mercy. Back then, she too had scratched the boulders with the same pain and helplessness, in hope that someone would take mercy on her and let her out.

Murderous intent filled her eyes, and she hissed out, "I was going to take the legal route, but it seemed like you are one nasty bastard, Ye Jinglan. It will be a pity to leave you in the care of the police."

Luo Huian pulled away from the door and turned around to walk out of the apartment without leaving any traces behind her.

Ye Jinglan had no idea that such a thing had happened behind him; he was quite dissatisfied with the fact that Luo Huian had sent a nanny to take care of Nian Zhi instead of giving him the money that he wanted.

He glowered at Nian Zhi, who was eating the rice porridge with her uninjured hand and cursed, "You are really useless. You just needed to make that bastard pity you and yet couldn’t even do that!"

The hand that was holding the spoon trembled slightly, and Nian Zhi looked up at the mer who was standing beside her bed. She whispered, "I didn’t do anything."

"That’s the point!" snapped Ye Jinglan. "You could have stayed awake and pleaded with Qi Yongrui. If you, a child, had pleaded with him and asked him to give you money for a good life, do you think that he would have ignored you? He would have agreed!"

When Nian Zhi heard the words of her stepfather, she pursed her lips. She knew that there was no point in saying anything to this mer as he was not only greedy but also unreasonable. It would be easier to smash her head open than make this mer understand that she did nothing wrong and that she was just a child who couldn’t withstand a pain as excruciating as her arm being burned.

She lowered her head and stayed quiet.

Upon seeing this, Ye Jinglan grew even angrier. He raised his hand and wanted to slap the girl in the face, but just then the sound of footsteps echoed behind her, and he immediately dropped his head just as the door of the ward was pushed open.

The nanny arranged by Luo Huian walked inside. He looked at Ye Jinglan and the kids before saying to Ye Jinglan, "Master Ye, do you want to go back home and take a shower? I will take care of the children until you return."

Ye Jinglan didn’t like the idea of hiring a nanny, but at the same time, he liked the idea of being treated like a master. He raised his head and straightened his spine a little before saying to the nanny, "I want to go to the apartment as well; there are some things that I want to bring with me, but can I leave the kids under your care?"

Even though he didn’t care about the children, Ye Jinglan knew that he needed to continue with his pretence, or things would become troublesome.

The nanny nodded. He smiled at Ye Jinglan before saying to the mer, "Don’t worry. You can leave the children in my care. I will make sure that they are safe and sound."

"If that’s the case, then I am glad," Ye Jinglan placed his hands on his chest and then said to the nanny, "Even though they are not my children, I cannot help but worry about them."

When the nanny heard Ye Jinglan’s words, he simply smiled at him without saying anything. Though he didn’t show it on his face, he had been right outside the ward and was listening to everything that was happening inside the ward.

If not for Miss Luo asking him to keep an eye on Ye Jinglan and tell her what he did to the children, he wouldn’t have stayed quiet till now.
