Chapter 598: Don’t pretend!

The mer nanny simply smiled and agreed. He didn’t say anything anymore and turned to help Nian Zhi. What a joke. If this mer was really worried about the children, why did he not help the child eat? Could he not see that the child was having trouble fetching the spoon and feeding herself?

If he wanted to pay lip service, he should at least try to make an effort; he was not as easy to fool as the rest.

Ye Jinglan didn’t know that the nanny had heard everything or that he had recorded the evidence. He simply twisted his waist and headed out of the ward, glad that he was finally free of the duty that he had never asked for. He wondered why his parents even married him to a woman who had children; why could they not marry him to a woman who had no kids or to someone whose kids were with her ex-husband?

He walked out of the ward and headed back home without even looking behind at the kids.

Nian Zhi watched the mer leave and pursed her lips, while Nian Wu, who was reading a small storybook, raised his head and looked at the mer who had walked away. The two of them were still worried that Ye Jinglan would return and cause trouble; thus, their bodies were really wound up.

"There is no need to worry." When the mer nanny saw that the two children were looking worried, he said to them, "He is gone. I don’t think that he will return so soon; you can eat your meal without any worry."

"Hmmm", Nian Zhi lowered her head and took a bite. However, after taking a bite of the porridge, she raised her head and said to the mer nanny, "Please tell the kind lady that I will repay her once I grow up. I will not take her money for nothing."

When the mer nanny heard her words, he felt his heart ache. The more sensible the little girl was, the more his heart ached. This girl was not even fourteen yet, and she was more sensible than those teenage girls. He said to the little girl, "There is no way to think so much. My boss is a reasonable young woman. Since she sent me here to take care of you, she did it out of the goodness of her heart. You don’t need to think too much."

After he finished speaking, he started feeding Nian Zhi again. However, he missed the glint that glowed in the eyes of the little girl when she heard the words of the mer.

"I will come back after washing the lunch box; make sure to take care of your sister till then," the mer nanny said to Nian Wu, who nodded and then returned his gaze to the book that he was holding in his hands.

However, just as the mer nanny walked out of the ward, he heard his sister say, "We have to run away."

Nian Wu stiffened. He raised his head and looked at Nian Zhi and repeated dumbly, "We have to run away?"

"Are you going to stay here and get beaten by that mer instead?" Nian Zhi spoke a bit more harshly than she intended. She glared at her younger brother and said to him, "You saw what he did to me. The doctor says that I might not be able to use this arm well in the future. That mer is cruel and greedy. It’s not a good mix."

"He would even sell us off if it means that he can have money to gamble."

Nian Wu clutched the book in his hands and then whispered in a soft voice, "But where will we go? We have nowhere to go."

The poor children didn’t know that they had a grandfather who loved them very much. This was because Ye Jinglan was worried that the children would make a fuss about returning to their grandfather and thus kept the matter of them having a grandfather a secret.

Thus, neither Nian Zhi nor Nian Wu knew that they had a family other than their late mother.

"Let’s go to the mer who helped us the last time," said Nian Zhi as she clenched the bedsheet in her hands. "He is nice, isn’t he? His wife is just as nice; she even sent a nanny for me. We will go and tell them the truth about how that mer treats us. I believe they will trust us."

"Will they?" Nian Wu asked. His voice filled with disbelief. In the past, it’s not that they didn’t want to tell the truth to their neighbours, but the thing was that no one believed them.

They all thought that they were liars and treated them as one.

Just because Ye Jinglan told rather convincing lies.

Nian Zhi pursed her lips. She said to Nian Wu, "We have no other choice. If we don’t run away, then I am afraid that the mer will kill us two. Maybe he will do something even worse... like selling us," she added after a pause, making Nian Wu’s face turn completely pale.

It wasn’t that Nian Zhi wanted to scare her brother. But she was no longer the naive little girl who could not understand things carefully. She knew that without the protection of their mother, that mer would definitely kill them.

If he couldn’t kill them, then he would squeeze them dry until he had made use of the last bit of their blood. Nian Zhi knew that she was not overthinking, that mer would really do it.

"Then — then we really need to run away?" Nian Wu asked. Though he was scared, he also knew that his sister was right. If they stayed with the mer, then he would definitely kill them.

Nian Zhi pursed her lips and nodded. "Yes. We have to do it and we have to do it tonight."

There was no time to waste.

On the other hand, Ye Jinglan had no idea that the two brats had decided to run away from him. At the moment, he was facing his own troubles. He looked at the many mers who were looking at him with a hint of anger and contempt in their eyes. Ye Jinglan, who had gone fairly well with them, couldn’t understand what he had done for these people to look at him with such gazes.

"So, you are back?" Just as Ye Jinglan was about to climb up the stairs, he heard a jeering voice and turned to look behind him.

"Master Sun," Ye Jinglan tentatively called the mer. He couldn’t understand why this mer had suddenly started talking with him. If there was someone with whom he couldn’t get along, it was Master Sun.

This was because the two of them were the same kind of person, and Master Sun hated how everyone praised Ye Jinglan while blaming him for being selfish and greedy.

Master Sun smiled at Ye Jinglan. He walked over with a sway of his waist and then said to Ye Jinglan, "Well, well, look at this. Even a sleazy person like you has this day."

Ye Jinglan’s heart clenched, and anger surged in his heart, but he still held himself back. He suppressed his anger and then said to the mer, "Eh? What do you mean, Master Sun? What did I even do?"

"There is no need to pretend," Master Sun sneered. He said to Ye Jinglan, "We all know what kind of person you are. Tell me, where were you last night? Were you really at the hospital, or did you go to your lover’s place?"

When Ye Jinglan heard the words of the mer, he felt as if someone had struck him with the back of a pan. For two seconds, he thought that the mer had gone crazy, or maybe he was the one who was dreaming. He raised his hand and pinched himself hard on the arm.

Pain shot through his arm, and Ye Jinglan winced. He realised that he was not dreaming; he raised his head and glared at the mer angrily. He said to him, "What nonsense are you talking about? How can you say such a shameless thing to me? Have you forgotten I am a widower who just lost his wife a few months ago!? What lover? I was at the hospital."

He raised his voice to assert his point and, at the same time, tried to bring in some supporters, but this time around, no one came to his help, which struck him as weird.

Master Sun smiled and said to Ye Jinglan, "There is no need for you to raise your voice anymore, Master Ye. Everyone saw the beautiful woman who came to look for you last night."

"Beautiful woman...?" Ye Jinglan’s brows furrowed. Did the thugs from the gambling house come to look for him? But he was quite sure that none of them was beautiful. So, who was this woman who came to look for him?
