Chapter 685: Lies And Suffering
Chapter 685: Chapter 685: Lies And Suffering
Yu Mei sighed, shaking her head sadly.
"I always wanted to help her, to guide her to the right path, but she pushed me away. Every time I tried to talk to her, she would glare at me and tell me to mind my own business. It was so heartbreaking..."
She sneaked a glance at Cai Bao, trying to read her reaction.
The old woman remained calm, but her hands were folded tightly together.
Yu Mei decided to add more spice to her story. "I was always scared of her. Sometimes, she would stay out all night and come home with bruises. Other times, she would sneak strange people into the house..." Yu Mei bit her lip, pretending to hesitate. "I don’t know what kind of people they were, but they didn’t look like good people..."
She sighed again, looking down as if burdened by painful memories.
"I never wanted to say anything before because... she is still my sister. But I can’t keep it inside anymore. I just feel so helpless, so disturbed. I don’t know what to do..."
Yu Mei’s voice cracked slightly at the end, and she subtly wiped the corner of her eye, making it seem like she was holding back tears.
She waited for Cai Bao’s response, eager to see if she had finally convinced the old woman of Yu Holea’s supposed bad nature.
Cai Bao calmly folded her hand and asked,
"From what you are saying this Yu Holea... seems like a very bad person. Hm...you know the strange part is my granddaughter-in-law’s name is Yu Holea too. However, she had exactly different experience.
She was kicked out of her house because of a fake daughter. You know she was swapped at birth and the fake daughter after Yu Holea’s return to the family, tried her best to frame Yu Holea.
The fake daughter snatched Yu Holea’s brothers and her parents, she even spread rumors about Yu Holea hanging out with hooligans.
At last Yu Hoela has to leave her own house. Poor her. Though I hate her, even I sympathize with her life story."
Yu Mei’s entire body stiffened.
Her smile froze, and she felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her head.
Cai Bao’s words echoed in her mind.
"Though I hate her, even I sympathize with her life story."
What did she mean by that?
Did she already know the truth?
Was she testing her?
For a brief moment, panic filled Yu Mei’s heart, but she quickly forced herself to remain calm. She couldn’t let Cai Bao see her hesitation.
Yu Mei lowered her head even more, pretending to be overwhelmed with emotions.
"That... that sounds so similar to my story..." she whispered, her voice shaking slightly.
"Maybe we are talking about the same person? But, Grandmother Cai, how do you know if she is telling the truth?"
She looked up at Cai Bao with innocent, teary eyes.
"Sometimes, people who do bad things try to act like victims. What if she lied to you?" Yu Mei bit her lip. "I don’t want to say anything bad about her, but I saw it with my own eyes. She stayed out all night... she hung out with dangerous people... My parents were always worried about her, but they didn’t know what to do."
Cai Bao gave her a sharp glance as if she were examining every word she spoke.
Yu Mei felt sweat forming on her back, but she kept her expression pitiful.
"She even finished high school in a... strange place," Yu Mei continued.
"It wasn’t a normal school. It was one of those places where kids who cause trouble are sent to. My father tried to investigate the school but he only found out some shady details about the school."
Cai Bao chuckled in mind.
Shady school?
Jackson High School was the peak not many are able to reach. To outsiders, it is shrouded in mystery.
And investigation? Even though the Yu family was the top family in the city, Mr. Yu didn’t hold the real power.
The real power was owned by Yu Sicong, Yu Shuchang, and Yu Sile.
Even Mr. Yu didn’t know of this truth. After all, this power shift had occurred 3 years ago.
Cai Bao let out a small "Hm." Her expression remained unreadable.
Yu Mei swallowed. She had to keep going.
"I wish I could say she changed, but... she didn’t," Yu Mei sighed heavily, as if she were truly heartbroken.
"Even now, she is still the same. I worry about her so much, but she won’t listen to me. I just... I just don’t know what to do anymore, Grandmother Cai."
Yu Mei finished speaking and peeked at Cai Bao from beneath her lashes.
She expected to see doubt in the old woman’s eyes.
She expected sympathy.
But what she saw instead made her heart skip a beat.
Cai Bao was smiling.
Not a kind, gentle smile.
No.
It was a knowing smile.
A smile filled with amusement... and something else.
Yu Mei felt her stomach drop.
"Oh, child," Cai Bao said, shaking her head. "You really are... something."
Yu Mei’s fingers clenched around the scripture in her hands.
Did Cai Bao not believe her?
Did she already know the truth?
Before she could say anything else, Cai Bao patted her shoulder and stood up.
"You should keep reading the scriptures," she said with a smile. "They will cleanse your heart."
And with that, she turned and walked away, leaving Yu Mei frozen in place, her nails digging into the pages of the book.
Her plan was perfect. Her words were flawless. So why did it feel like she had lost?
Taking a deep breath, Yu Mei forced herself to calm down. Maybe she was overthinking. Maybe Cai Bao was just testing her.
Yes, that had to be it.
The old woman wouldn’t just ignore such an emotional story. She would think about it. And once she did, she would surely start doubting Yu Holea.
Yu Mei closed her eyes and took another deep breath.
She had to be patient. Cai Bao was an elder. She wouldn’t jump to conclusions immediately. But with time, the seeds of doubt would grow.
Yes. That had to be it.
Meanwhile, Cai Bao walked slowly through the temple gardens, her hands behind her back. A small chuckle escaped her lips.
"That girl really thinks she can fool me?" she muttered to herself. "How amusing."
Cai Bao had seen many liars in her long life. She had dealt with scheming nobles, greedy businessmen, and cunning socialites.
Compared to them, Yu Mei was like a child trying to play an adult’s game.
She had watched Yu Mei carefully throughout the conversation.
The hesitation, the calculated tears, the way she kept glancing at her to check her reaction—everything was staged. It was almost impressive how much effort she put into pretending.
But Cai Bao was no fool.
She already knew the truth about Yu Holea. She knew about her struggles, her pain, and how she had been wronged.
The real victim was Yu Holea, not the girl pretending to be pitiful inside the temple.
Cai Bao sighed and shook her head.
"She thinks she’s clever, but she’s just digging her own grave."
She continued walking, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the temple. She had no reason to expose Yu Mei’s lies right away. After all, the best way to deal with liars was to let them believe they were winning... until they destroyed themselves. Cai Bao walked deeper into the temple, her steps slow but steady. The air was calm, filled with the faint scent of burning incense. She soon spotted an elderly monk sweeping the stone path near the prayer hall. His robes were simple, and his movements were unhurried, yet his eyes held deep wisdom.
"Master Lin," Cai Bao greeted with a small nod.
The monk stopped sweeping and looked up, a gentle smile on his face.
"Madam Cai, what brings you here today?"
Cai Bao sighed and shook her head.
"There is a young girl here, Yu Mei. She reads scriptures, but her heart is full of lies. She needs to cleanse her soul.
I want you to increase her reading time. Make her copy the scriptures by hand. Do not go easy on her. Let her suffer— in a good way."
Master Lin stroked his beard thoughtfully.
"Ah, the girl who weeps without true sorrow. I have watched her. Her prayers are empty, her kindness is false. You are right, Madam Cai. She needs to learn patience and humility."
Cai Bao smirked.
"She dares to insult my granddaughter-in-law. She has no right. Let her stay here until she learns what real suffering is."
Master Lin bowed slightly. "It will be done."
Back inside the temple, Yu Mei finally calmed down. She convinced herself that she had done well.
"I just need to be patient," she whispered. "Cai Bao will come around."
She didn’t realize that her greatest enemy wasn’t Yu Holea... but the old woman she had just tried to fool.
