Sheng Yin froze, her body stiffening as Yu Shuchang’s words sunk in.
She glared at him from the corner of her eye, her heart pounding from the sudden proximity.
The way his arm casually yet possessively wrapped around her waist made her want to slap him, but she couldn’t risk the scene he threatened to create.
Mu Jie’s eyes narrowed, the smug look on his face slowly dissolving.
He could see the tension in Sheng Yin’s posture, but Yu Shuchang’s grip on her made it impossible for him to make a move without escalating things further.
"So, baby," Yu Shuchang emphasized the word, throwing Mu Jie’s own casual nickname for Sheng Yin back at him with a pointed smile.
"I think we were about to leave for that dinner, weren’t we?"
Sheng Yin clenched her jaw.
"Yes, darling," she replied sweetly, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Let’s not keep the reservation waiting."
Mu Jie’s expression faltered for a split second before he regained his composure, but the tension between the three of them was palpable.
His hand slipped off Sheng Yin’s shoulder, and he took a step back, eyes darting between her and Yu Shuchang.
"Looks like you two are... closer than I thought," Mu Jie remarked, his tone carefully neutral but laced with underlying bitterness.
"Well, I suppose I’ll take my leave then." He flashed a tight smile, though the glint in his eyes was anything but friendly.
"Don’t be a stranger, Mu Jie," Yu Shuchang said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
"I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of each other."
Mu Jie gave a short nod before turning on his heel and walking away, his steps brisk and his shoulders stiff.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Sheng Yin forcefully disentangled herself from Yu Shuchang’s hold and shoved him away.
"Are you out of your mind?" she hissed, "What was that all about?"
Yu Shuchang straightened his jacket, unfazed by her fury.
"Just trying to keep you out of trouble," he replied coolly, though there was a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
"It worked, didn’t it?"
Sheng Yin stared at him incredulously.
"You call that keeping me out of trouble? You just made things worse!"
Yu Shuchang’s expression sobered, his playful demeanor fading.
"Mu Jie isn’t someone you should be associating with," he said, his voice more serious.
"He’s dangerous, and I don’t trust him."
Sheng Yin folded her arms, narrowing her eyes at him.
"I can handle Mu Jie. You don’t need to play the overprotective knight."
"Maybe," Yu Shuchang admitted, "but I’d rather not take the risk. You’ve got enough on your plate without adding him to the mix."
Sheng Yin shook her head, frustrated.
"You really don’t get it, do you? I don’t need you to protect me. I’ve been handling my own messes for a long time."
"Maybe I don’t get it," Yu Shuchang replied, his voice softening, "but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stand by and watch you walk into a trap."
"Do you truly think your cheesy lines would work on me?" Sheng Yin asked with a bitter chuckle.
"Hm?"
"I have known Mu Jie for the past 3 years. His dad was one of the leading businessmen. Holea once helped him.
Feeling grateful for her help, Mu Jie’s dad secretly transferred 5% of the shares to her name. Mu Jie liked Lea and wanted to use this 5% share to attract her attention.
Mr. Mu asked me to handle the shares on Yu Holea’s behalf to keep Yu Holea and Mu Jie apart since he knew that Yu Holea was engaged."
Yu Shuchang raised an eyebrow and asked,
"Wait...why did he ask for your help? I mean why you and not someone else? As far as I know, there are many capable people around Lea...wait! What I mean is you are capable, but you are not the only one who is capable around Lea, right? "
Sheng Yin let out a soft, exasperated sigh, her eyes narrowing slightly at Yu Shuchang’s attempt to recover from his awkward statement.
She crossed her arms and gave him a pointed look.
"Do you really think that’s important right now?" she asked, shaking her head.
"To answer your question, Mu Jie’s father knew I was close to Yu Holea but not biologically related and can be called her subordinate. He didn’t want anyone too attached to the family getting involved, and he trusted me to keep things discreet."
However, the real reason was Sheng Yin was the only one who had great knowledge of the shares and knew how to fight against the shareholders, hence Mr. Mu asked for Sheng Yin’s help when he got to know of her secret.
Yu Shuchang took a moment to process this, nodding slowly as he considered her explanation.
"So, he used you as a buffer."
"Exactly." Sheng Yin’s gaze softened just a little.
"He knew I’d protect Holea’s interests without causing unnecessary drama. And in return, I helped keep Mu Jie from crossing any lines. He’s... persistent, but not a bad guy."
Yu Shuchang frowned, not fully convinced.
"Persistent or not, I still don’t like the way he looks at you. It’s like he’s testing his limits with you, trying to see how far he can push things."
Sheng Yin raised an eyebrow at him.
"Why does that bother you so much? It’s none of your business how Mu Jie acts around me."
Yu Shuchang paused,
"Because it is my business if you’re getting involved with people who might cause trouble. And because I care about what happens to you, whether you want to admit it or not."
Sheng Yin blinked, caught off guard by the sudden sincerity in his voice.
She opened her mouth to respond but quickly shut it, feeling an unfamiliar pang of uncertainty. For a moment, they stood in silence.
Sheng Yin knew that Yu Shuchang cared a lot for her and hence she didn’t refute.
That night they had dinner, and both of them had their own thoughts.
Just as Sheng Yin finished her dinner she received a call from Yu Holea. Without hesitation, she picked up the call and called out in a cheerful voice,
"Lea~ Are you missing your big sister?"
However, the only sound that came from the other side was...the sound of sobs.
Sheng Yin’s expression changed and she asked anxiously,
"Lea? What happened? Why are you crying?"
"She is crying?" Yu Shuchang’s expression changed.
"Lea, tell me what’s going on," Sheng Yin urged, her voice trembling slightly as she leaned forward.
Yu Shuchang’s eyes darkened, "Let me talk to her," he said, his voice low but urgent.
But Sheng Yin ignored him for the moment, her focus entirely on Yu Holea.
"Lea, it’s okay. Just breathe. I’m here. What happened?"
After a few shaky breaths, Yu Holea finally spoke, her voice breaking between words.
"I... I didn’t know who else to call... I didn’t want to worry anyone, but... something happened."
Sheng Yin gripped the phone tighter. "Tell me, Lea. We can fix it together."
Yu Shuchang, now pacing back and forth, shot Sheng Yin an expectant look, waiting for any hint of what was wrong.
"Qiao...Qiao Jun...he...asked me to call off the engagement." Yu Holea’s voice sounded choked.
Sheng Yin gritted her teeth and said,
"Lea...Lea listen to me, where are you? Tell me your location first."
"I’m at home," Yu Holea finally managed to say. "I couldn’t face anyone... not after what Qiao Jun said."
Sheng Yin’s grip on the phone tightened, her heart aching at the pain in Yu Holea’s voice. "Stay there. I’ll be there soon," she said
"Lea, it’s going to be okay. Don’t do anything. Just wait for me."
As she hung up, she turned to Yu Shuchang, her face tense.
"We need to go. Now."
Yu Shuchang, who had been silently listening, didn’t ask any questions. He simply nodded and started for the door.
"I’ll drive."
The ride to Yu Holea’s home was filled with heavy silence.
Sheng Yin’s mind was filled with various thoughts. Her train of thought was interrupted when Yu Shuchang asked,
"What has happened? Can you tell me?"
"Qiao Jun called off the engagement." Sheng Yin said through gritted teeth. No one other than Yu Holea could be as angry as her.
After all, she had...
"What?" Yu Shuchang was stunned. "But why?"
Why would Qiao Jun call off the engagement now?
Everything had been perfectly arranged. Their families were practically intertwined because of it.
Something wasn’t right, and the thought of her sister hurting like this made Yu Shuchang’s blood boil.
They pulled up to Yu Holea’s home just as the sky darkened further, casting an ominous shadow over the quiet house.
Sheng Yin rushed to the door, not even waiting for Yu Shuchang, and knocked sharply.
The door opened a crack, revealing Yu Holea’s tear-streaked face.
Her eyes were red and swollen, her usually bright and lively expression dulled by sorrow.
