Chapter 578: Trust
Chapter 578: Chapter 578: Trust
"You know exactly what it means." He tilted his head. "You’re not as innocent as you like to pretend, are you?"
"I never said I was innocent," Sheng Yin rolled her eyes.
Yu Shuchang blocked her path and suddenly asked,
"Were you truly behind all of these?"
Sheng Yin gritted her teeth,
"Yes! So what?"
Yu Shuchang shook his head and a serious expression appeared on his face,
"You don’t understand anything...Yu Mei...she is very powerful, you should stay away from her."
"I know." Sheng Yin shot back with a serious expression.
"You know yet you tried to scheme against her? Do you think she wouldn’t fight back? She would think Yu Holea is the one who is behind all of these and vent her anger on my sister."
Sheng Yin lowered her head and fought back the tears pooling in her eyes.
"Don’t worry, I have dropped an anonymous message on Yu Mei’s phone proving that I was the one who was behind this scheme."
To calm herself, Sheng Yin did an acting exercise, the countdown.
She internally mounted up to 10 numbers and once she reached 10, her tears dried up.
Like a switch was turned on, a smile appeared on her face.
Then she lifted her head and said,
"Do you truly think I will harm my Lea?"
Do you truly think I will ever be so dumb to put my Lea in trouble?
In their previous life, she was once accused of the same thing. At that time, Yu Holea was the one who took a stand for her, but Yu Shuchang... remained silent.
She expected him to take a stand for her, but he remained silent the entire time.
Afterward, she asked why he didn’t take a stand for her, he only glared at her and said with a serious expression,
"I too sometimes suspect that you want to harm Lea."
Those words broke her heart.
She can harm anyone in the world but not Lea.
Even now...though Yu Shuchang acted as if he was worried about her...in fact he was worried, that she would put Yu Holea in danger.
It was understandable that he was worried about Yu Holea, but was there truly a need to question her?
Yu Shuchang stared at the beautiful woman in front of him who had a fake smile plastered on her face and frowned.
Why does she get so offended by his words?
"Sheng Yin..." His voice softened, but before he could continue, she cut him off.
"Save it, Yu Shuchang," she said, her voice colder than before.
"You don’t need to explain. I get it. Lea is the only person who matters to you. And I’m just...someone you’re forced to deal with because of the contract."
Her words hit him harder than he’d expected, and he opened his mouth to protest, but Sheng Yin was already shaking her head.
"Do you think I don’t know? I’ve always known that Lea is your priority. And I understand, really. She’s your sister, and you want to protect her. But do you honestly think I’d ever hurt her?" Her eyes narrowed, the hurt now fully replaced by anger.
This time Sheng Yin decided to lash out.
Why should she hurt, while this jerk could go around with a happy face?
Yu Shuchang’s jaw tightened.
He didn’t want to admit it, but there were moments in the past where he’d questioned Sheng Yin’s intentions.
He knew she was capable of scheming and manipulating others to get what she wanted, but when it came to Yu Holea, something told him she was different.
He just couldn’t reconcile his doubts with that gut feeling.
"That’s not what I meant," he said quietly, taking a step closer to her.
"It’s just...after everything that happened, I can’t help but worry."
Sheng Yin laughed bitterly.
"Worry? About me, or about how my actions could affect Lea?"
There was a long silence between them.
Yu Shuchang didn’t know how to answer her.
He wanted to say he was worried about both, but the truth was that his concerns had always been primarily about his sister.
Seeing his hesitation, Sheng Yin scoffed and turned away from him.
"You don’t have to say anything. Your silence speaks louder than words ever could."
Yu Shuchang felt a knot form in his stomach as he watched her walk away.
He knew she was right—his silence had always been his biggest flaw when it came to her.
But he couldn’t shake the doubts that lingered in his mind, the fear that one day Sheng Yin’s ambition would blind her to the consequences of her actions, and that Yu Holea would pay the price.
But standing there, watching her retreat with that fake smile on her face, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt.
Deep down, he knew Sheng Yin had never truly given him a reason to doubt her loyalty to Yu Holea.
"Sheng Yin, wait," he called out suddenly, taking a step after her.
She paused but didn’t turn around.
"Look...I never meant to make you feel like you don’t matter. You do. And I trust you with Lea’s safety, I really do. It’s just—" He hesitated, struggling to find the right words.
"I’ve been burned before, okay? I’ve seen people betray each other for less than what’s at stake here, and I can’t afford to be careless. Not when it comes to Lea."
He had already hurt Yu Holea once...he couldn’t bear to hurt her again.
Every second he lives in fear...fear that one day...unknowingly he would fall under another Yu Mei’s illusion.
This fear gnawed at him every day, making him feel cautious around all the women.
Sheng Yin slowly turned to face him, her expression unreadable.
"I understand that, Yu Shuchang. But I’m not those people. I’ve never been. And if you can’t see that by now, then I guess I’ve been wasting my time trying to prove it to you."
Yu Shuchang’s chest tightened at her words. He took another step closer, his gaze softening.
"You haven’t been wasting your time."
Sheng Yin raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Haven’t I?"
He exhaled, running a hand through his hair, frustrated with himself.
"No. You’re right. I should’ve trusted you more. And I’m sorry for doubting you."
For a moment, Sheng Yin just stared at him, her eyes searching his for sincerity. Finally, her tensed jaws relaxed and she said,
"Fine."
Yu Shuchang heaved a sigh of relief and said,
"As an apology, I would treat you to a meal."
Sheng Yin raised an eyebrow,
"Sure. But I want to dine at the most luxurious restaurant and private room."
"Sheng Yin!" A masculine voice called out.
When Sheng Yin and Yu Shuchang turned around they saw a young man dressed in a dark blue business suit walking towards them.
The young man had handsome facial features, his sharp jawline accentuated by the tailored dark blue suit.
His eyes were focused intently on Sheng Yin.
"Mu Jie?" Sheng Yin raised an eyebrow, "What are you doing here?"
Mu Jie smiled,
"I was here for a meeting, what about you?"
Yu Shuchang narrowed his eyes as Mu Jie approached, his posture stiffening. He recognized the name, but it was the familiarity with which Mu Jie addressed Sheng Yin that bothered him.
This wasn’t a random encounter—it felt intentional, too smooth.
Sheng Yin crossed her arms. "Just handling some personal business," she replied coolly, avoiding Mu Jie’s probing gaze.
Mu Jie’s eyes crashed into Yu Shuchang’s and a smile that can’t be called a smile appeared on his face,
"Personal business? I see. Well, have you thought about my proposal?"
Sheng Yin rolled her eyes and declined,
"My answer is still the same."
"Aww...baby, can’t you reconsider just once..." Saying so Mu Jie moved to hold Sheng Yin’s hand, but before his hand could reach Sheng Yin, Yu Shuchang stood in between them and said with a gentlemanly smile,
"Mr. Mu, why don’t you maintain some distance while talking? Miss Sheng feels uncomfortable around the stranger."
Mu Jie stared straight into Yu Shuchang’s eyes with a hint of provocation in his eyes and said,
"Is that so? Ah...then I would like to disappoint you, Mr. Yu. Actually..." Mu Jie bypassed Yu Shuchang and held Sheng Yin’s hand,
"We are best friends and we don’t feel uncomfortable with each other’s touches."
Sheng Yin neither agreed nor disagreed, but she let Mu Jie’s hand stay on her shoulders.
Yu Shuchang’s heart itched at the sight of Mu Jie’s hand on Sheng Yin’s shoulder.
Without a word, Yu Shuchang held Sheng Yin’s forearm and moved her to his side.
"Best friends? Well, that is indeed a close relationship. But..." Yu Shuchang pulled Sheng Yin close to himself and slipped his arms around Sheng Yin’s waist.
Sheng Yin was instantly alarmed and was about to struggle when suddenly Yu Shuchang leaned near Sheng Yin’s ears and whispered,
"If you dare to move even an inch, I will kiss you. Baby."
