Chapter 221: Idiot
*knock* *knock*
The faint knock echoed through the dorm room, nearly lost beneath the steady rumble of thunder that rolled through the sky outside.
Rain lashed against the windows in heavy sheets, casting wavering shadows across the small, dimly lit room.
On the floor near the table, Dhayun slowly woke up.
Her eyelashes fluttered, and her brows creased slightly as she awoke from a restless nap.
She blinked groggily, her cheek sticking slightly to the hardwood floor where she’d fallen asleep.
She sat up slowly, brushing a lock of hair from her eyes.
"Huh...?" she murmured and her voice was hoarse with sleep.
"Did I fall asleep... here...?"
Her fingers brushed against her phone, still lying beside her where she had held it after the call.
A soft knock echoed again.
Knock knock.
She stiffened slightly and her eyes narrowed.
In the silence of the dorm, broken only by the rain’s whisper and occasional thunder, the sound was unsettling.
Her heart ticked faster ’Who would come here in this weather?’
Rubbing her eyes and stretching her sore limbs, she stood up and quietly shuffled toward the door, scratching her head in sleepy confusion.
Still in her oversized sweater, the sleeves slipped slightly past her fingertips as she reached for the peephole.
Looking out through the peephole, her eyes widened.
"...Woonie?"
For a moment, she didn’t believe it.
Brandon was standing in the dim hallway light, completely drenched from head to toe, with water dripping from his hair and clothes onto the floor.
His chest rose and fell slowly and his eyes were staring straight at the door like he had been standing there for a while.
Dhayun’s breath caught in her throat.
She quickly undid the lock and flung the door open.
"Woonie?"
Brandon looked up at her with a smile.
The rain matted his hair against his forehead, his shirt clung to his skin, and his lips were pale from the cold.
He didn’t speak for a second and he just stared at her with those tired but warm eyes.
"...Hey," he finally said in a soft voice.
A wave of warmth surged through her chest and she stepped forward as her hands reached out instinctively to touch his soaked sleeves.
"What are you doing here?" she asked in a breath, her lips trembling.
"You said you weren’t coming... I thought..."
He shook his head slightly "I couldn’t leave things like that. I... wanted to see you."
Dhayun looked up at him, stunned by his words.
Her heart pounded as tears prickled the corners of her eyes.
She bit her lip, "You’re drenched, idiot! Come inside, come in!"
She grabbed his hand and pulled him into the dorm room as the door shut behind them with a dull click.
The moment the door closed, the rain’s roar faded to a distant echo.
Brandon stood there dripping onto the floor and his breath came out in misty little puffs.
Dhayun stared at him for a moment longer before her resolve broke. NovelFire
She threw her arms around him and buried her face in his soaked chest.
"...Stupid..."
He froze, then slowly raised his arms and wrapped them around her, holding her tightly.
Her body was warm, trembling slightly in his arms, and he could feel the leftover tears soaking into his shirt along with the rain.
"I made stew..." she mumbled into his chest.
Brandon smiled faintly and kissed the top of her head.
"I’m here now," he whispered. NovelFire
"Let’s eat together."
Dhayun slowly pulled back from the hug and her hands were clinging gently to Brandon’s soaked sleeves.
She sniffled softly and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, managing a faint smile through the watery glint in her gaze.
"The stew’s gone cold..." she murmured, glancing toward the small table where the pot still sat, untouched.
"The rain brought in all this chill..."
Brandon followed her gaze and looked at the table.
"I’ll reheat it," she said quickly, as if afraid he’d think the food wasn’t good anymore.
"It’ll only take a moment."
He opened his mouth to speak, but she was already moving.
Her bare feet padded softly across the wooden floor as she scooped the pot and carried it back to the small stove in the kitchenette.
The sound of metal meeting the burner rang faintly in the room, followed by the quiet hum of the fire reigniting.
Dhayun glanced over her shoulder at him and her expression was soft "Go change, Woonie... You’ll catch a cold."
Brandon blinked and looked down at his soaked clothes, his shirt clinging uncomfortably to his chest, water dripping from the edge of his pants.
He gave a sheepish chuckle "Yeah... guess I should."
She pointed toward the narrow hallway "There’s a towel in the bathroom cabinet and some extra clothes in the bottom drawer. I’ll heat this while you’re getting dry."
He nodded, showing her a small smile as he stepped toward the hallway.
Left alone again in the small kitchen, Dhayun stirred the stew slowly and her heart was pounding with happiness.
She exhaled, watching the steam rise from the pot.
"Warm again," she whispered.
"Just like before."
The stew began to simmer gently as small bubbles rose to the surface, releasing the aroma of the broth.
The soft patter of rain outside continued, but it no longer sounded lonely.
The thunder had quieted too, fading into a dull growl somewhere in the distance.
She glanced over her shoulder toward the hallway where Brandon had gone, then quickly looked away as her cheeks colored slightly.
In her mind, she could still see his face, that stupid soft smile he gave her while drenching in rain.
He had come. Even after saying he wouldn’t... he came anyway.
A small smile bloomed on her lips "Idiot..."
Dhayun poured the hot stew into two bowls and she took extra care arranging the table again, cleaning the spots where the stew pot had been and placing the bowls neatly side by side.
She even pulled the slightly wrinkled napkins she had folded earlier and smoothed them out, placing them beneath the spoons.
As the door clicked open behind her, she turned.
Brandon stepped out of the hallway, now dressed in a simple white T-shirt and a pair of black pajama pants.
His hair was towel-dried but still damp, and he was rubbing at his head with one hand.
Dhayun couldn’t help but smile "Those pants are a little big for you."
He chuckled, letting the towel fall onto his shoulder "Guess you’re taller than I thought."
He walked over to the table, sitting down beside her.
Dhayun clasped her hands in her lap "It might be a little salty. I’m not used to cooking stew for someone else..."
Brandon took a spoonful, blew on it gently and then took a sip.
He blinked once and then again.
Dhayun looked at him anxiously, seeing his reaction "Is it-"
"It’s perfect," he said, turning to her with a warm, honest smile. "Seriously."
The tension in her shoulders dropped, and her lips curled in a soft smile.
They ate slowly, in a comfortable silence.
The clink of spoons and the soft rumble of rain filled the room like a lullaby.
Occasionally, Dhayun would glance at Brandon’s face just to reassure herself that he was enjoying the meal.
And each time she saw him, the ache in her chest lightened just a little more.
When they were done, Brandon leaned back in his chair with a satisfied sigh, patting his stomach "Best meal I’ve had all week. I am surprised you cooked my favourite stew."
Hearing this, she chuckled and patted his stomach too "Of course, I know you love it, idiot..."
