Chapter 222: Cleaning the dishes

Chapter 222: Cleaning the dishes

Earlier...

Brandon ended the call with a slow exhale and lowered the phone from his ear.

Guilt shimmered quietly behind his calm eyes.

He sat in silence for a moment and the sound of footsteps broke the silence.

Ravene stepped into the hall and looked at Brandon sitting on the couch, "Brandon, come on, let’s eat dinner. Elize made something light."

He nodded slowly. "Alright,"

Eira stirred slightly in his lap with her hands clutching him.

He reached out with his free hand and gently brushed a loose strand of hair behind Eira’s ear.

Eira looked up at him quietly.

Brandon showed a small smile and leaned forward to press a soft kiss to her forehead.

She closed her eyes at the touch, as if absorbing the comfort he offered.

"...Was that Dhayun?" she asked and her voice was muffled against the fabric of his shirt.

Brandon nodded. "Yeah... I told her I’d come see her tonight. But... everything that happened..."

His voice faded and he leaned his head back against the couch, letting the weight of exhaustion briefly pull him down.

A flicker of guilt passed through his eyes "Eira..." he started, uncertainly.

But she reached up and gently placed her hand over his heart.

"It’s okay," she said softly, tilting her head to meet his eyes. "Go and meet her."

He blinked "Are you sure?"

She smiled faintly "Mm. You’ll be restless all night otherwise. You had promised her. I know how much that matters to you... And besides,"

"...I’m alright now. I have Sister Ravene and Aunt Elize here. You can go."

Brandon looked at her and then let out a small chuckle "Thank you... really."

He leaned down and kissed her on the lips.

Eira smiled against his lips, whispering, "Be careful, alright?"

He nodded "I will."

Brandon slowly rose from the couch, taking a final glance at Eira before walking toward the kitchen.

There he saw Elize and Ravene talking to each other.

Without a word, he casually walked up behind them and gave each a light slap on their asses.

Both women jolted slightly in surprise.

Then they giggled and turned to look at him "Kael?"

With a smile, he replied "I am going out, I will be back tomorrow."

Elize was startled to hear this "It’s raining outside! Where are you going?"

He smiled and leaned toward Elize, pecking her lips quickly "Eira will tell you the details. I’m in a bit of a hurry."

Then, turning to Ravene, he muttered, "And Rave, I’m taking your car."

She hurriedly grabbed his hand and pulled him "Kiss is only for her? Where is my kiss?"

Letting out a chuckle, he leaned forward and kissed her lips "Alright, I am leaving... dear."

Then he was gone.

The door closed softly behind him, and moments later, the echo of a sleek engine hummed

under the storm.

Elize glanced at Ravene "He better not speed in this weather."

Ravene rolled her eyes but smiled "You’re the one who raised him."

---

Dhayun stood at the sink with her sleeves rolled up as she carefully cleaned the dishes one by one.

The stewpot was already empty, resting upside down on the drying rack.

She was humming softly under her breath as she scrubbed the bowls.

Brandon leaned silently against the doorway, watching her.

A pair of arms slid gently around her waist from behind.

Dhayun let out a quiet breath and her hands paused in the dishwater.

Her eyes widened slightly before softening and her entire body relaxed in the embrace.

She didn’t have to look to know who it was.

Brandon rested his chin lightly on her shoulder, his arms gently wrapping around her.

"Sorry," he murmured in a calm voice against her ear.

"I just... didn’t want to sit alone while you were doing everything."

She smiled gently, resuming her movements under the water as she leaned slightly into his embrace.

They stood like that for a while her washing the last of the dishes and him holding her close.

When she finished, she turned the tap off, shook the water from her hands, and reached for the towel.

Brandon caught her hand before she could dry it, pulling her gently to turn around and face him.

His hands slipped down to her waist, and her slightly damp fingers came up to rest on his chest.

They just looked at each other for a moment before he leaned in and kissed her forehead.

Dhayun felt the warmth of his lips on her forehead and closed her eyes for just a second, letting herself melt into the comfort of the moment.

As he pulled back slightly, their eyes met again and she raised her head, kissing his lips.

Pulling back from the kiss, he looked at her and muttered "Shall we go to sleep or watch some anime?"

With a soft sigh, she muttered "No, first tell me what happened today."

He hesitated for a moment before nodding his head.

---

Brandon exhaled slowly, his body finally relaxing into the softness of the couch.

Dhayun sat beside him, as if trying to stay composed.

But as he finished recounting the events of Elize’s arrival, Naevora’s desperate fight, and the pain of watching it all helplessly... her shoulders trembled.

She raised a hand to her mouth and her heart was pounding in disbelief.

"G-Glad you’re safe, Woonie..." she whispered in a shaky voice.

Brandon gave a faint nod and smiled warmly.

Then Dhayun leaned in slowly, resting her head against his shoulder.

"I’m sorry..." she murmured.

Brandon blinked and turned his head slightly.

"I didn’t know," she continued, her words broken by small gulps of breath. "I didn’t know what you were going through tody. I thought you just... didn’t want to come see me. I blamed you."

Her arms wrapped around him tightly, as if afraid he’d vanish if she let go.

"I was upset, even jealous... that you are probably with Eira while you were out there fighting for your life."

Brandon remained silent for a moment and turned his hand slowly, intertwining his fingers with hers, gripping them gently.

"I don’t blame you," he said in a low voice.

"You didn’t know. And honestly... just hearing your voice earlier helped more than you think."

Dhayun’s breath hitched slightly and she pulled back just enough to look at him, her eyes glistening with tears but soft and affectionate.

She said, wiping the corners of her eyes with the back of her hand. "Even after all that, you still came here... dripping wet, just to make sure I didn’t feel ignored."

Brandon smiled faintly and brushed her tears "You matter to me. That doesn’t change... also stop crying."

Her lips quivered and she moved closer again, nestling her cheek into the crook of his neck, listening to the steady thump of his heartbeat.

His hand moved slowly to the back of her head as his fingers gently weaved through her hair.

They stayed like that in silence for a while.

The low hum of rain against the windows filled the room, and the clock on the wall ticked softly.

"I love you," Dhayun whispered into the fabric of his shirt.

Brandon turned his head and pressed a gentle kiss to the crown of her head "I love you too..."

A few minutes passed-

Dhayun had a thoughtful face as her fingers slowly traced the side of his neck. "So... Aunt Elize’s core isn’t actually broken."

"Mhm." Brandon gave a quiet nod as he continued patting her head.

Then, she lifted her head slightly and kissed the side of his neck.

Her lips lingered for a moment before she gave a small bite and sucked gently, just enough to leave a mark.

Brandon chuckled softly. "What’s that for?"

"Marking what’s mine," she murmured, then gave a small satisfied hum.

"Also... I’m honestly surprised Yverine went that far to save you. Even I wouldn’t have expected that."

She licked her lips and leaned against him again, wrapping one arm around his torso while the other toyed with the fabric of his shirt "I’ll put a little more respect on her name next time I see her."

Brandon smiled wryly "What kind of history do you two even have? You sound like rivals."

Dhayun’s lips curled into a smile "Nothing serious. We’re both in the 3rd-year Ascendant class... so there’s always been a bit of silent competition. Tests, training, missions... you know how it is."

She tilted her head up and whispered near his ear, her breath brushing his skin "I just hate losing, that’s all."

Brandon couldn’t help but chuckle again, "I get that."

At this time, suddenly the mobile phone rang and Dhayun turned her head and looked at her mobile on the couch.

The screen lit up- [Mom - Incoming Video Call].

She sighed lightly "Haa... my mom’s video calling me."

Brandon blinked, sitting up slightly. "Oh? Pick it up. It’s been a while since I last saw her."

With a small, nervous smile, Dhayun reached for the phone and accepted the call.

The screen flickered, and soon, the elegant face of a beautiful mature woman appeared.

Her black hair was tied neatly, and her black eyes sparkled with gentle curiosity.

"Dhayun, sweetie- oh..." Her voice paused.

Her gaze shifted to the side of the screen, and she quickly recognized the handsome youngman "Woonie?"

Brandon smiled and leaned a bit closer to the camera, "Yes, Aunty... It’s been a while. How have you been?"

"Oh, my..." the woman blinked in surprise. "You’ve grown up so much."
