Chapter 1772: The Past
Upon hearing Aida's request, Connor couldn't help but pause for a moment, then smiled and said, "Are you implying that you have no ulterior motives towards me, Miss Aida?"
"Who has any motives for you? I'm really just scared! Do you think I would actually like someone like you?" Aida replied with exasperation.
"Back when I suggested sharing a room, you adamantly refused. Now, you're voluntarily asking to share a room. You're quite a strange person," he commented, shaking his head in amusement.
"Are you agreeing or not? If you're not, I'll go back to my room!" she asked hesitantly.
"Alright, I see you're quite pitiful. The door isn't locked; come in!" he said casually.
Upon hearing his response, she quickly entered his room.
"Let me make it clear; I won't sleep on the couch. If you want to sleep on the bed, go back to your room," he told her as he turned on the light.
"No need; I'll just sit on the couch for the night," she said, knowing she couldn't compete for the bed.
"Are you planning to sneak into my bed again in the middle of the night?" he asked cautiously.
"Get lost!" she retorted, rolling her eyes at Connor. She then took out her phone and started checking her emails.
Connor glanced at her and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Working!" Aida replied.
He was momentarily speechless upon hearing this. He frowned and said, "Sometimes, I find you quite pitiable. You've been hunted down by your own family, and although I used to envy having a family, if they're like your family, I'd rather not. Plus, you're working even at a time like this. I really admire you!"
"In any case, I can't sleep, so I might as well check my emails to pass the time!" she said casually.
"Well, don't you have any other hobbies? You can play mobile games; I can recommend one. I've spent over a hundred thousand in it, and it's really fun..." Connor suggested, taking out his own phone.
"No thanks!" She declined.
"Suit yourself..." He lay down on the bed, opened his mobile game, and started playing seriously.
Connor lay on the bed and opened his mobile game. Then, he began playing it seriously.
Aida turned to look at Connor and was surprised to see that he was actually playing a game. Her expression seemed somewhat helpless, and she softly said, "You're quite amusing, you know. Sometimes, I think you're quite scheming, but other times, you seem really childish..."
"No choice, if I don't have a bit of cunning when dealing with people like you, I'd have been played to death by all of you a long time ago..."
"But I don't like this kind of life. I still think my previous life was better. We may not have had much money, but we were happy. We didn't have to live every day in suspense and manipulation..."
"Take playing games, for example. Back then, I could be happy all night just by casually getting a better piece of equipment. But now, I don't have that feeling anymore because no matter what equipment I want, I can buy it with money!"
Connor said with a chuckle.
"Can you tell me about your past?"
Aida suddenly became curious and asked Connor.
"My past?"
Connor couldn't help but pause when he heard Aida's question.
"Yes, I'm quite curious about what you've been through. I did some research on your background, and I know you inherited Steven's legacy and became Jorge's disciple. But I'm not very clear about what happened before that, so I'm curious..."
Aida said softly.
"The past is in the past, and I don't want to dwell on those things anymore..."
Connor didn't intend to tell Aida about his past because he always felt that this woman was too dangerous. The more she knew about him, the more she might use it to her advantage.
"It seems you still don't truly trust me, even now."
Aida sighed softly as she looked at Connor.
"You're a very cunning woman..."
Connor said directly.
"You..."
Aida glanced at him, feeling somewhat helpless. She then changed the subject and asked, "So, what's your plan for the next steps?"
"What else can I do? Tomorrow, I'll call Albert and let him know that you're in my hands, and I'll ask for money in exchange for your safety," Connor replied, pausing for a moment before continuing, "At that time, I'll need you to act in front of them, try to convince them. This way, we both get the money, and you can continue to gather information about Collie's and Gomez's families."
"But you mustn't let Shereen or Cielo know about this!" Aida said after thinking for a moment.
"Why?" Connor asked with a furrowed brow.
"Because both of them want me dead. Even if they find out that you've kidnapped me, they won't pay to save me. On the contrary, they might choose to conceal the information. By then, both of us will be in a very passive position..." she explained.
"Rest assured, I'll try to contact Beau or Albert directly. I believe they should care about your life and death!" He nodded.
"Albert might agree to save me, but only if the price isn't too high. If it exceeds the value I can bring to the Chen family, he'll choose to abandon me," she said, sounding somewhat sad.
"So, how much money do you think would be appropriate?" he asked.
"If the price you ask for is too high, Albert definitely won't agree. But if it's too low, it will make the Chen family suspicious of your true motives. So, you must choose the right price!" After a brief pause, Aida answered, "I think Albert would be willing to pay up to 2 billion. Without this project I have, he'd probably only offer up to 1 billion."
"2 billion?" Connor was momentarily surprised.
"Yes, I have a project now, and its profits are at least over 1 billion. However, without me, the Chen family would lose at least 3 billion. So, in such a critical situation, Albert would definitely not want anything to happen to me. If you ask for 2 billion, he should agree," she analyzed.
"What if this project of yours didn't exist? How much do you think they'd be willing to pay at most?" he asked.
"Probably only 1 billion," she replied after some consideration.
