Chapter 82: A Little Care

"To be honest, my mom is really experienced in sales," Jessie said, her eyes filled with admiration for Laura at that time.

However, now that Laura had gone for the wrong person and ended up with such a life, Jessie felt deeply sorry for her.

"Given her abilities, there’s no question that she could find a company in the future, work in sales, and even become a sales manager," Kevin nodded.

He had talked with Laura a few times before; she spoke in a very logical way, so his conversations with her were usually quite pleasant.

"Yeah, but it’s not that easy. She hasn’t worked for years and has been just a housewife. She closed her shop for Uncle William, telling her previous clients she was getting married and quitting. She then married him, thinking she would have a happy life. But what happened instead? A hot mess; a shipwreck, even. Uncle William used my mom’s money from selling her shop to get close with his manager—now, he’s a small boss himself with an office and a secretary. Perhaps that’s why he feels more capable now and has started acting up, treating my mom badly."

"So what about your stepdad?" Kevin asked further.

He was curious to know where William worked so he could arrange for someone to give him a good ’care treatment.’

Jessie didn’t think too much and directly answered, curious, "Why? Do you know anyone from his company?"

He shook his head. "Not really, just happened to hear about it..."

Despite having no impression of the small company William worked in, he only needed to ask Adam to get all the information if he was curious.

After dropping Jessie off at the shop entrance, Lilian had been waiting for a while. Seeing that Kevin was the one dropping Jessie off today, she curiously observed them.

Could it be that the two of them secretly went on a date on the way here, and that’s why there was a slight delay?

As soon as Jessie saw the smile on Lilian’s face, she knew Lilian was overthinking. She got off and said goodbye to Kevin.

"If you need my help with anything, feel free to let me know."

"Okay."

As the pickup truck drove away, Lilian immediately came over and linked arms with Jessie, raising her eyebrows in curiosity.

"Come on, tell me, what were you two just up to? Did you kiss?"

Jessie looked helpless, but Lilian’s mention of kissing made her recall that she actually did kiss Kevin before. However, it had only happened twice.

Thinking of the scene back then, her ears turned slightly red. Lilian thought she had guessed right and clapped her hands, exclaiming, "I knew it! You two were bound to fall in love with each other at some point. I’ve been waiting for this!"

"Quit your nonsense. I ran into my stepdad’s family today. Jessie immediately changed the subject and relayed the whole story to Lilian.

Lilian widened her eyes in disbelief, staring at Jessie.

"That family must really be off their rocker. It’s a good thing Mr. Harper was there with you—otherwise, I would’ve been afraid that those two old ladies would come at you."

"You think they can come at me?" Jessie snorted. After the incidents caused by Lilian’s matchmaking and her ex-boyfriend, she enrolled in a self-defense class just to have some skills to protect herself.

Lilian poked Jessie’s arm. "Alright, alright, I know you’re strong. But on a serious note, isn’t Aunt planning to divorce?"

"I haven’t talked to her about today yet, but even if she doesn’t want to, I’ll definitely advise her. The only hard part of this will be her getting a job. She has been living as a housewife for so many years, and she has no work experience during that period. I’m just worried that no company will want to take her in," Jessie said, propping her head up and looking distressed.

Lilian frowned and pondered for a moment, but she suddenly patted Jessie’s shoulder.

"I’ve got it! Aunt can come to work for my boss’s company. My boss is easygoing, so I’m sure it’ll work. Besides, even though she hasn’t worked all these years, her client resources are still there, so she might just do well in sales."

Lilian spoke with bright eyes. That way, Steve wouldn’t have to run after clients all the time, and Laura’s client resources could land them a few deals.

Jessie thought for a moment and nodded; it was indeed a good idea.

"Then I’ll ask Steve about it when the time comes. I don’t know if he will be able to help."

Although she was well-acquainted with Steve, work would be very different since it was related to their interests. She didn’t want to become a burden to his job.

"He’s very accommodating, but don’t worry—he wouldn’t have Aunt join us just over your relationship. He’s very serious about work," Lilian observed. Even though the company’s performance and profit were excellent and didn’t require Steve to personally manage them, he still insisted on doing everything with his own hands, as if he wanted to make a name for himself.

In this regard, Lilian looked up to him greatly. If it were her own company, she would just want to kick back and relax as the boss.

Jessie gave Lilian a knock on the head, replying, "Oh, so you are aware of how hard he works. He’s your boss, after all. You should learn from him instead of running to me all the time."

"I’m just here to chat with you and help you unwind, aren’t I?" Lilian said righteously.

But truthfully, she had learned one thing from Jessie—marriage required a great amount of caution, and women needed to know how to be independent and not be fooled by a man’s sweet talk so easily.

Despite that, she wouldn’t need to worry about food and clothing after marriage with her current state. Therefore, she certainly wouldn’t and didn’t need to rely on a man to support her.

"Jessie, you don’t need to worry too much about Aunt. She’s a strong woman, even more so than we. Right now, she’s only holding back because she has a son and a problem with your stepdad. Otherwise, she would definitely walk a path of her own."

Speaking of which, Lilian couldn’t help but ask, "Honestly, what skincare products does Aunt use? Her skin condition looks amazing, although she has put on a bit of weight. You need to help Aunt lose some weight to maintain her health, since her age group is quite prone to high blood pressure."

Jessie agreed completely with Lilian’s words. As for the skincare products Laura used, she really didn’t know. She had never seen her mother apply anything on her face, let alone buy any, since William was awfully stingy.

Returning to Harper Group, Adam was teasing Kevin once again.

"You clocked in to work so late; were you spending time with your little wifey again?"

Adam sipped his coffee, not noticing the stain on his shirt. Kevin pointed it out. "You’ve got a stain."

He looked down, noticing that there actually was one. Before he could reply with a thanks, Kevin continued, "It’s a pity you have to buy your own shirts, while I’ve got a wife to buy some for me."
