Chapter 81: Listening to Her Complain
"Seriously? You’re accusing us of guilt-tripping your mom? Jessie, you’re young. How can you speak like this? You barely have any decorum! Look at the state your mom is in. If she gets a divorce, who would want to marry her again?" Mandy went more and more overboard, even shouting for Laura and William to get divorced.
Jessie glanced at her, feeling the itch to slap her growing stronger. However, Evelyn was quicker.
"Shut up!" Evelyn slapped Mandy, glaring at her.
Mandy held her face, sad. However, it was her own mother who said that, so she didn’t retort and only remained silent despite the indignant feeling in her heart.
Evelyn hurriedly tried to smooth things over. "Jessie, don’t take your aunt’s words to heart. Couples fight all the time; they quarrel at the head of the bed and reconcile at the foot, right? Besides, Luke is still so young. If they really get divorced, that would be a big problem."
"You’re right; William did mess up this time. Couples shouldn’t resort to violence even when arguing, should they? However, two of them have stubborn tempers. Letting this go on like this isn’t the solution for it, no? That’s why we’re trying to..."
Before Evelyn could finish, Jessie interrupted with a sneer.
"Grandma Evelyn, you guys came back this time for my mom so that you could ask her to take Uncle William back, right?"
Seeing her intentions exposed, Evelyn didn’t refute and instead nodded. She responded righteously, "She is a bit softer, right? Laura is good-tempered. I talked to William as well, but he just wouldn’t understand. That’s why I’m coming to Laura instead."
Jessie found it laughable. She found it unbelievable that these people could ever make William bow down to Laura. Moreover, why should her mom apologize just because she has a good temper?
She coldly refused, "Grandma Evelyn, don’t say such things. Grace City isn’t that big, but not to the point where a certain man can’t find his way home, right? If Uncle William feels like he went too far, then he should come back and apologize to my mom by himself.
"He’s a man, yet he needs a woman to apologize and persuade him home? What kind of ‘capable man’ is that?"
They wanted Laura to go to the Krut family’s house? What a big joke! Wouldn’t she basically be stepping into a tiger’s den directly? If that time came, they would definitely bash her round after round. If anyone needed to bow down and apologize, it should be William first.
Otherwise, if he remained absent, it was fine since the house here was quite big; Laura and Luke could live more comfortably.
Hearing this, Evelyn was furious. She directly pointed at Jessie and scolded, "What do you mean by that? What would a brat like you know?
"Let me tell you, even if William doesn’t come back, he definitely won’t give your mom any living expenses. She doesn’t even have any income—if she’s capable of it, let’s see how she can survive without setting foot into my Krut household for her entire life!"
After saying this amidst her anger, Evelyn left with Mandy immediately.
Mandy didn’t forget to turn back and sneer, "Don’t come crying to us then!"
Jessie rolled her eyes at their backs. Come crying to them? She would never do that!
Despite that, Jessie was still furious as she thought of their words. She clenched her fists, struggling to maintain her emotions and stop herself from rushing over to scold them more.
From this, it was obvious that Laura had married the wrong man.
No wonder they used to say that when approaching marriage, you must not only look at the man but also his family.
As the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together.
Their demeanor perfectly explained what kind of person William was.
Kevin could tell that Jessie was still furious. He almost smiled seeing her puffed-up side face, but he quickly suppressed it and pushed that feeling away.
"If you’re still so angry, why not chase after them and beat them up some more?"
He had seen her deliver that slap earlier so beautifully, initially thinking she was only verbally sharp. He didn’t expect her to actually act once they got on her nerves, which meant he would have to be more cautious with her in the future.
Hearing his teasing, Jessie coldly snorted and said directly, "No worries; she took two slaps, even though one wasn’t from me. However, I’m satisfied enough to forgive them.
"But if they really have the guts to lay their hands on me, I’ll definitely teach them a good lesson."
Saying this, she rolled up her sleeves and waved her fists at their departing figures.
It was a good thing that she had come over; otherwise, with there only being Laura and Luke, who knows how much they would have been bullied.
"Don’t get angry—it’s not worth it to harm your health. Tell your mom about this when you get a chance, see what she thinks," Kevin said gravely.
Although the Krut family had started all this, Laura wasn’t around at the moment. Jessie might be her daughter, but everything regarding the divorce depended on her opinion and not anyone else’s.
Jessie nodded. After understanding what he meant, she wasn’t as pissed anymore. The person she felt for the most right now was Laura.
These people were really too much, but her mom endured not filing for a divorce just because of Luke. Moreover, she didn’t have a job, and she might not win custody if she were to divorce William now.
"I think they’re so angry at my mom’s retaliation because they’re just so used to being enslaved. The victims being unable to empathize with the rebel—what a joke. Not only do they want my mom to take care of the house, but they even want her to earn money. They want to drain everything from her just for their happiness."
Kevin saw her prattling nonstop, not finding it annoying at all. Instead, he listened to her complaints with patience, even nodding occasionally and giving her emotional support.
He also couldn’t stand William’s actions.
Noticing his patience, Jessie was a bit touched. Realizing the time now, she rechecked her schedule in a hurry.
"Enough said, I’ll definitely talk to my mom about it. It’s getting late, so you should get to work."
"It’s fine; I’ll head to work after you’re done venting."
"Isn’t your work ethic a bit too lax?" She raised an eyebrow.
"I’m quite diligent at my job," Kevin frowned, correcting.
His serious demeanor successfully made her laugh. She waved her hand, nudging his shoulder. "Just kidding, let’s wrap it up. You give me a ride to the shop, then head to work."
"Okay." He nodded.
In the car, he couldn’t help but ask curiously.
"What did Mom work as before?"
Jessie had mentioned previously that Laura used to run a shop, and she was quite successful. However, he didn’t really know the details of what type of shop it was.
Jessie smiled. "She ran a dessert shop. I’ve followed in her footsteps, but I’m not doing as well as she did. She didn’t only sell desserts; she would sell whatever was popular."
