Flash Marriage with A Hidden Tycoon -
Chapter 80: Standing Up
Chapter 80: Standing Up
Evelyn’s words became more and more outrageous, even thinking it was necessary for William Krut and Laura to split things so clearly.
"Just look at your mom—she stays at home all day, only needing to cook for a family of three. The allowance William gives her each month is quite a lot, too; three thousand five hundred. Does a family of three need to spend that much on food? Not only has she not saved any money, but she also asks him for money all the time. What kind of behavior is that?
"Your aunt has a child, yet still goes to work and earns money. But your mom has the audacity to throw a fit when all she does is rest at home. If she doesn’t earn money and relies on William, that’s fine, but she should at least take care of the basic three meals a day, right? Despite all that, she doesn’t even cook; is she a wife or a God at home?
"If it weren’t for William’s good temper, a woman like her would have been divorced long ago!"
Jessie’s face darkened instantly at Evelyn’s words. Who said women were born to take care of children and do housework?
Although she and Kevin had a flash marriage, they both took turns doing household chores at home. Even though he had secretly hired a cleaner, in Jessie’s eyes, both of them were still the ones sharing responsibilities.
This world was unfair to women in many ways, and the ones with thoughts like Evelyn and Mandy were the true tragedies for women.
Kevin noticed Jessie’s anger and wanted to step forward to speak, but he heard his wife open her mouth to refute sharply.
"Is it easy to take care of a child? Your daughter had three children, and you helped take care of them. Ask yourself, is it easy to take care of a child? Aren’t you the one who looks after Aunt Mandy’s children? Of course, she has time to earn money because of that. What about my mom? Who helps her around?
"To put it bluntly, the child my mom gave birth to is your real grandchild. As his grandparents, have you ever properly taken care of him? How dare you bring up Aunt Mandy’s job to criticize my mom?
"It’s fine if you want my mom to make money; you both can come over and help her watch over Luke instead. Don’t forget; she used to earn much more money than Uncle William!"
Mandy responded confidently, "They are my parents—what’s the problem if they’re willingly helping me take care of the children?
"If you have the guts, ask your grandparents to help you, too. Oh, I forgot. They don’t even acknowledge you, not to mention your mom is an orphan..."
Before she could finish speaking, Jessie stepped up and slapped her.
Mandy cried out, "You little brat! How dare you hit me!"
"Why wouldn’t I dare? If someone uses such filthy words, they deserve a good slap. Otherwise, they might disgust everyone with the trash they spray from their mouth." Jessie’s gaze was icy.
Evelyn tenderly touched Mandy’s cheek, glaring at Jessie with resentment and wanting to help her daughter get justice. Kevin, however, leisurely stepped forward and stood behind Jessie, emitting a strong pressure. Evelyn was left shuddering, stopping her from approaching with only the option to swallow her anger.
"Jessie, hitting people is not okay!"
"Then why aren’t you blaming your daughter for disgusting someone on purpose? People should have some conscience," Jessie retorted without any politeness.
They wanted to criticize her? No way!
"Do you know how expensive my face is? I just had hyaluronic acid injections a few days ago!" Mandy fumed, quickly taking out her phone to see if her face had any issues. If it did, she wouldn’t let Jessie off.
Jessie saw a small dent in her cheek and couldn’t help but laugh, "You know, over-maintaining your face will only backfire when you’re getting older. Why not take the time to rinse your mouth out more often instead? It’s really just so filthy!"
"What are you implying by that?!" Mandy shrieked, her face very ugly.
She didn’t want to admit Jessie was right, but as she grew older, fine lines had begun appearing at the corners of her eyes. Laura was only a few years younger than her, but she still looked in great shape; it made her extremely jealous.
"I’m speaking politely—it was Uncle William who insisted on splitting things so clearly with my mom. Isn’t it obvious my mom’s responsibilities are clear, too? It’s obvious that he’s the one who started all this, so he will have to accept the consequences of it. Despite not wanting to spend that much money, he expects my mom to invest all of her energy. Why is that? What reasoning is there in the world for such a thing?
"Again, why should women make things difficult for other women? If you both want to ingratiate yourselves with your husbands, that’s your business; don’t impose that on my mom!
"Also, it was Uncle William who hit her first. If he hadn’t done that, she wouldn’t have retaliated like that. Didn’t you see the wounds on her arm? If she couldn’t defend herself and I wasn’t there, he could have beaten her to death! All that, and you expect my mom to apologize? Not gonna happen! He can choose whether he wants to come back or not!"
Evelyn gave Jessie a displeased look and said, "Jessie, as a wife, should you not contribute anything? What’s wrong with compromising for a marriage? You can’t argue without reason."
The more she listened, the more confused she was. Who was actually being unreasonable here?
Before Jessie could step up to retort, Kevin held her wrist and shielded her behind him, speaking up coldly.
"She is my wife; who are you to dictate what she should do?
"If you don’t like her mother, just say so—we can afford the criticism. Besides, you all know very well how you’ve treated Mom. If a man can’t even support his wife and children, even wanting to split responsibilities so clearly, that just means one thing: he is utterly useless.
"Marriage requires two people to manage and maintain together. If you think her mom has gained too much, I can only say your thinking is truly sad."
Jessie felt a warm surge rise in her heart as she looked at Kevin’s solid back, somehow getting enough courage to hug his arm.
He moved his eyes slightly and glanced at her, but he didn’t say a word.
"My mom has to clean the house and take care of Luke at home; she’s not just fooling around. Grandma Evelyn, you’re also a woman. You help Aunt Mandy with her kids at home, so you know how hard it actually is, right? Do you think it’s easy?"
That one sentence successfully made Evelyn shut her mouth.
She was aware of how taxing it was to help with her grandchildren at home, especially with the older one being stubborn and the younger one being noisy. Adding on to the fact that she had to do chores, it was utterly exhausting.
The main issue was that taking care of children was incredibly tiring—they cried and fussed all day long.
Seeing Evelyn’s grim face, Jessie had a knowing look.
"Grandma Evelyn, you shouldn’t demand certain sacrifices from my mom if you’re well aware of how heavy it actually is. She doesn’t have it any easier either, so stop trying to guilt-trip her!"
