Chapter 79: Confrontation

Jessie shook her head while eating the breakfast Kevin had made.

"No, actually, you may not see it on the surface, but my mom is still really upset inside."

Moreover, Luke was so young and couldn’t go on without a father.

She didn’t want him to end up like her.

Kevin noticed Jessie’s thoughts and comforted her, "Don’t worry too much. If Mom needs us, she will definitely call. And didn’t you warn them properly back then? I’m sure they won’t dare to do it again." f\ree webn ovel(.)com

What the two of them could do now was to support Laura behind the scenes. As for how to do it specifically, it depended on Laura’s own decisions.

Jessie also nodded, understanding the situation.

"I’ll send you to work today," Kevin said, concerned that she hadn’t fully rested yet.

Touched by his thoughtfulness, she recalled that she had reminded herself yesterday to keep some distance from Kevin. But today, she realized that she was throwing that advice right out the window.

She sneakily glanced at him and couldn’t help but admit how handsome he was.

Lilian once told her that although he had agreed to a divorce after six months, there was still time. She urged Jessie to seize the moment and try to develop a connection with him. After all, such a good man was rare to find.

Jessie thought Lilian was right, wanting to give it a shot. Being married to Kevin would be ideal.

The opportunity was right in front of her. If she didn’t take it, she would regret it later.

It was just like Julia, who was boldly confessing her love for President Harper while ignoring outside opinions—it was a trait she had that Jessie greatly admired.

As long as she tried her best, even if it didn’t work out, she wouldn’t have any regrets.

Knowing Jessie’s concern for Laura, Kevin took a slight detour to Laura’s house. However, Laura had already left to buy groceries at that time, so they had to leave. As they were about to, they noticed some familiar figures approaching from not far away.

Jessie squinted to see better. Weren’t those William’s relatives?

Given the look on their faces, she anticipated some trouble; they were probably here to bother Laura again. Now that she was here, she would see what they wanted!

Kevin sensed something was off, asking, "Do you need my help?"

"No need. You stand behind me and watch how I take them on," Jessie said, rolling up her sleeves and preparing for battle.

"Alright," he replied with a smirk and stood silently behind her.

If things were to go south, he would definitely step in. However, since she wanted to handle this herself, he would let her take the lead.

On the other hand, the group of people did not expect to see Jessie there. They originally planned to teach Laura a lesson in her absence.

Jessie forced a smile and coldly asked, "Isn’t this Grandma Evelyn and Aunt Mandy? Why are you here?"

She wanted Laura to handle it herself before, but now that they were here in full force, Jessie wasn’t about to back down.

Mandy eyed Jessie’s outfit. Since she wore such simple clothes even after marriage, Mandy looked down on her even more.

Evelyn shared the same sentiment. To her, Jessie was an outsider. If Laura spent money lavishly, it was surely because of Jessie. They were glad they had pressured William into making Jessie leave; it was a wise decision.

After all, Luke was still their grandchild, but who was Jessie?

Thank goodness they had separated Laura and William, or else he would have suffered.

"Why are you here looking for my mom? She’s out at the moment," Jessie said, trying not to be too harsh.

As Laura’s daughter, she would be elated if Laura found happiness. She comforted herself, hoping these people were here to apologize.

However, Mandy’s next words shattered her hopes.

With her hands on her waist, she sneered, "Jessie, don’t forget what your mother did to William! I’m telling you, this matter isn’t over! Since you’re here, let’s talk about how we’re going to resolve this."

Hearing this, Jessie’s smile faded fast. She knew there was no need for pleasantries with them, as they would only take advantage of it.

Suppressing her anger, she smirked coldly. "How do you want to resolve this? Don’t forget, Uncle William also laid hands on my mom. Her face and arms are still injured, and my brother-in-law only suffered some minor injuries. Besides, who started it? Who incited the fight in the first place? We all know the truth, right?"

Mandy huffed, "As a wife, she should expect some hits! Moreover, if she hadn’t treated William like that, would he have hit her? I’m telling you, he’s put up with your mom for long enough.

"Your mom did wrong and deserved to be hit! She had the audacity to fight back, scaring William to the point that he’s too scared to come home these days. Just so you know, this is partially your responsibility as well.

"You don’t even carry our name, you’re not one of us or part of our family. Laura is at least a daughter-in-law, but what are you? This situation is not up to you to handle. If you want to sort it out, fine; let your mom prepare an apology gift, go to William, apologize, and assure him that she won’t lay hands on him again! Only then will this matter be finished."

Jessie was astonished, her worldview shattered. How could there be people so shameless? Moreover, they were talking with so much confidence; it was downright unbelievable.

Everything they were doing was just far too revolting.

"Laura is my mom. Do you think this isn’t my business? You’re all ganging up to bully her. Do you really think I’m not involved?"

As Jessie said this, Evelyn came forward with more complaints to say.

"Jessie, you’re a married woman now. Is it acceptable that as a wife, you can get away with not working and still not cook for your husband?

"William works hard all day, and there’s not even food prepared when he gets home; he ends up having to cook by himself. What’s the point of getting married then? He already pays for everything at home, yet your mom barely contributes; she just stays home with the kid. Essentially, all she’s doing is lazing around. Why stir up such trouble?

"When she’s being inconsiderate and letting her own husband starve, isn’t it normal for William to get angry?"
