Chapter 77: Taking Advantage
Chapter 77: Taking Advantage
The entire night, Kevin seemed a bit distracted. Adam nudged him with his elbow and said solemnly, "What’s up with you today? You’re not in the zone at all."
He had to admit, Kevin was truly a bit intimidating with that dark look. The sight of him made the executives present a little hesitant to speak.
"Sorry," Kevin quickly adjusted himself and soon successfully concluded the cooperation.
After the others left, Adam noticed his behavior was a bit odd. "What are you thinking about?"
Kevin had never gotten distracted when it came to work matters.
Even Kevin himself realized he was in a strange state today.
His phone suddenly rang. Seeing that it was Jessie calling, he immediately answered.
However, it was Laura’s voice that came from the other end.
"Kevin, are you available to pick up Jessie? She’s drunk. I’m afraid something might happen if she goes home alone."
"No problem, where’s the address? I’ll head over now." Kevin quickly agreed.
He hadn’t drunk any alcohol today.
After knowing the address, he took out his car keys and left, leaving Adam shaking his head at his retreating figure and mumbling, "I see you were distracted because of this."
No wonder Grandpa Harper chose this girl. Jessie truly had great charm.
On the other side, Jessie was already a bit tipsy after a few drinks, but her mind was still clear.
Laura walked over after the call, shaking her head helplessly. "I’ve called someone to pick you up. Just wait here for a while."
Hearing this, a trace of disappointment flashed in Steve’s eyes. He originally wanted to send Jessie home and maybe get some alone time with her. However, it seemed that he was too
slow; just like he was a few years late in meeting her.
But clearly, they knew each other first.
"No need for him to pick me up. I can go home myself," Jessie said stubbornly, standing up to prove she was sober. However, she ended up collapsing into Lilian’s arms.
"Jessie, Aunt is right. Let Mr. Harper take you home," Lilian, helping her to the side, said as she rolled her eyes.
Though she was a slightly better drinker than Jessie, she wasn’t that much better off.
"Aunt Laura, how come you’re not drunk at all?"
"A while back, I entertained potential business partners, and naturally, my tolerance improved," Laura chuckled. "He should be here soon."
Steve’s expression changed a bit. "I... I’ll go to the restroom."
With that, he got up to leave, but Lilian held him back.
"Why are you in such a hurry? Haven’t you met Jessie’s husband yet? It’s a good chance to say hello."
"No need, there will be plenty of chances in the future," Steve said with a forced smile, his retreat seeming a bit like an escape.
He hadn’t met Kevin, but Lilian had described him as someone handsome, tall, and capable. Steve feared that by comparison, he might not even match up to Kevin; how could he face Jessie anymore at that point?
Most importantly, watching the person he liked being taken away by another man was just too painful.
When Kevin arrived, he looked at Jessie’s intoxicated state with furrowed eyebrows. After greeting Lilian and Laura, he took her away.
He was curious as to where Steve went at first, but after Jessie almost fell again, he quickly forgot about it.
"Why would you drink if your tolerance is low? Lucky you’re with people you know; you would have been in trouble otherwise."
Since she kept stumbling, he had no choice but to carry her in his arms.
"Mr. Harper," She giggled, her face flushed as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
The strong smell of alcohol hit Kevin’s nostrils, making him show a hint of disdain despite not saying anything.
Noticing this, she squeezed his nose as she angrily accused, "You were just looking down on me just now, weren’t you?"
After saying that, she was smiling again as she patted his cheek.
"Mr. Harper, your nose is so nice-looking. Did you have plastic surgery?"
Kevin wasn’t used to Jessie touching him like this, dodging slightly. With a scowl, he snapped at her in a low voice, "Jessie, behave yourself! I know you’re sober."
"No, I won’t! No, I won’t!"
The alcohol had emboldened her; she directly slipped her hand inside his shirt. Her eyes lit up as she felt his toned muscles, unable to resist giving it a squeeze.
"Mr. Harper, you’ve got quite the body!"
"Jessie! Stay away from me; you reek."
"Reek?" She snorted, annoyed. "Did you forget when you came home drunk last time? How come you didn’t mind your own smell then?"
Kevin decided not to argue with a drunk, tossing her into the back seat to avoid her taking advantage of him as he prepared to start driving.
Feeling bored, Jessie looked around as her mood suddenly went downhill. She mumbled, "All men are dogs!"
Though she didn’t say anything, she was still worried for Laura deep down.
Kevin was about to comfort her, but he noticed that she had fallen asleep through the rearview mirror.
He sighed, wanting to tell her that not all men in the world were like William. While some might indeed be terrible, there were still good men out there.
Just like him, if he fell for her, he would surely be a reliable support for her.
Even though they were currently just married on paper, he would still fulfill his duties as a husband.
Stopping at Quiet River Community, he opened the car’s back door and reached in to tap her on the shoulder. “Jessie, wake up. We’re home.”
Seeing no reaction, he assumed she was deep asleep. He leaned in to pick her up, only to be met with her bright eyes as she wrapped her arms around his neck and locked her legs around his waist.
"Carry me upstairs," she said with a bit of a pout in her tone.
Kevin’s eyes flickered as he warned with a low voice, "If you’re awake, stop taking advantage of me and go up by yourself. You’re not that drunk; you should know well what you’re doing."
He was right; she knew what she was doing. However, being warned not to take advantage of him repeatedly stirred her rebellious side further—the more she wasn’t allowed to, the more she wanted to.
Besides, why couldn’t a big guy go through a little suffering?
She wasn’t hiring a male escort, after all; even if they were only married by name, they were still a legal couple. What would be so wrong with taking a little advantage over him?
"Fine, I understand now. You just really can’t do it."
"What can’t I do?"
Those words directly challenged Kevin. For a man like him, claiming he couldn’t do something was taboo.
Jessie blinked knowingly, her lips curving into a smile. "Can’t do it in that aspect, of course."
