Chapter 76: Dinner Invitation

Speaking of this, Laura lowered her head in guilt. She felt like she couldn’t even protect her daughter, and her own marriage was now in disarray.

"Mom, don’t blame yourself. This is their fault, not yours," Jessie reassured, gently patting Laura’s back.

The heartless ones were the Moore family members; she and Laura were the only victims. freew\ebno\vel..(c)om

"By the way, where is Uncle William? Has he been bothering you?" Jessie had been wanting to see Laura these past few days, but each time she wanted to, she would either be caught up in something urgent or Laura would be outside. free\we,bnovel.c o(m)

"No, he’s been staying with his parents these days," Laura replied, a cold glint flashing in her eyes.

Ever since William went to stay with his parents, life had been quieter for her. However, the Krut family relatives loudly criticized her in their group chat, blaming her for not doing her duties as a wife. They kept saying that she should be cooking and doing household chores while her husband should be working outside.

Laura couldn’t understand where these twisted ideas came from. Her previous earnings from running a business were at least as much as William’s; oftentimes, she even earned more than he did.

Despite that, they insisted that she acknowledge her fault, claiming that the family depended entirely on William’s earnings. In other words, she would be nothing if she got a divorce. Not only that, they even claimed she wasn’t soft and considerate enough, implying that she should be the one to bear the brunt of the pressure William faced at work.

Fed up with their attitude, Laura lashed out at them in the group chat before blocking and deleting all of their numbers.

She would have tolerated their behavior before, but she was too tired to endure or associate herself with them anymore.

"You don’t need to worry about my issues. If those people dare to bother you, call the police immediately, okay? Don’t give them an easy time," Laura advised.

Jessie nodded. She wouldn’t stand back and let those people off.

There was a knock at the door, and Lilian noticed that Steve was locked outside.

She rushed to open the door. "Boss, what brings you here?"

He rubbed the back of his head, unsure how to respond. He wanted to help out earlier, but he kept getting interrupted and noticed that Jessie didn’t seem to need any help.

"I’ve actually been standing outside for a while, wanting to offer some help, but..."

"It’s no big deal. Sit down and rest for a bit," Jessie said with a smile, unconcerned.

This only made Steve more uneasy. Did she think he didn’t speak up out of fear back then?

He only regretted his lack of power. If he were influential enough, he would surely protect her.

If only he were the eldest son of the Harper family; if he had such a status and position, he could offer Jessie enough support!

Thinking about it, he began to console her, "Jessie, those people went overboard. They’re trying to reconcile with you only because of the pressure they’re going through now. No matter what, you can’t agree with them; they’re just people who love guilt-tripping others. The harm they’ve caused you can’t be excused with a simple apology."

"If you forgive them too easily this time, they will just think you’re easy to bully and keep doing this."

Steve felt a deep sympathy for Jessie’s problem and wanted to do what little he could to help.

However, because of his current position and Jessie’s married status, he couldn’t cross too many boundaries.

Simultaneously, he regretted not making more of an effort to find her sooner. Had they been in a different timeline, he might have been able to marry her.

Unfortunately, it was all just a fantasy now.

Jessie placed the freshly brewed coffee on the table. "Don’t worry, I know they’re not sincerely apologizing. They were harshly criticized online, and I heard even my cousin was suspended by the Rossi Group, which is why they’re in a hurry. If it weren’t for their losses right now, they wouldn’t apologize at all."

In the end, they didn’t feel the slightest bit of guilt over their actions. Instead, they only accused her of being too aggressive.

As a granddaughter, she was expected to endure more losses and give more money to them.

They were restrictive and irresponsible, always coveting other people’s possessions.

Lilian also sighed. "Yeah, these people are ridiculous. I don’t know how they have the face to say such things. If they can, I can’t bear to listen."

Hearing this, Steve immediately pulled out his phone.

"Even though I couldn’t help much, I recorded audio and video outside. You can release it online if they dare to lie."

Lilian’s eyes lit up as she praised, "Boss, I didn’t expect you to be this clever."

Laura also nodded in approval with a smile.

"Wow, thank you so much," Jessie exclaimed gratefully.

She had forgotten to collect evidence to counter any possible accusations against her.

"If you really want to thank me, remember to treat me to a meal. Also, for the last time," Steve casually added.

Standing aside, Lilian rolled her eyes. "You hold that one meal appointment well. But, I’m going too!"

Jessie nodded with a smile. "Mom, why don’t you join us too?"

"Alright," Laura agreed.

This matter soon reached Kevin’s ears. When Adam saw Kevin still reading a file, he couldn’t help but tease him.

"Your wife’s relatives have shown up. Aren’t you going to help her out? Not worried she might get bullied?"

Kevin’s eyes flickered, but his face remained indifferent. "She can handle such minor matters herself. Moreover, all the neighbors are on her side; adding on the surveillance cameras around, they wouldn’t dare do anything."

Adam raised an eyebrow. He thought Kevin would be anxious, especially given his haste this morning when Jessie got injured.

It seemed his affection wasn’t deep enough yet. Jessie needed to work harder in order to win Kevin over soon. Adam thought to himself, eager to see drama unfold. fr.e ewe.bno.vel .com

"There’s one more thing that I think you will be interested in."

Kevin responded coldly, "Can’t you get some proper work done? You’re always talking about trivial matters."

Adam choked on his words for a moment but retorted immediately, "I haven’t been working properly? Don’t forget that I’ve been handling all the socializing lately!"

Kevin didn’t even look up, only responding blandly, "I’m married now and have a wife. I need to go home and be with her in the evenings."

Adam cursed Kevin in his mind. He was intent on getting to Kevin, too.

"Well, I’ll have you know your wife’s having dinner with that guy from the Smith family tonight!"

Just as he said that, Kevin received a message.

[Mr. Harper, I’m going out for dinner tonight. Will you be coming? Lilian and her boss will be there, plus my mom.]

Kevin frowned instantly, merely replying with a [Not going.]

"What’s the social event tonight going to be? I’m going with you," he stated.

Adam was stunned. ‘The sun must be rising from the west today.’
