Chapter 70: Explanation
Chapter 70: Explanation
In the evening, Jessie had already prepared dinner by the time she returned home. Kevin watched her bustling around in the kitchen, suddenly feeling like having a wife was really nice.
Hearing the sound, she looked up at him. "Mr. Harper, you’re back. The shirt I bought for you is on the sofa. Try it on when you have time and see if it fits."
"Alright." He picked the shirt up and suddenly remembered something—he had never told her his size. How did she know?
"How do you know my size?"
She responded naturally without lifting her head, "I was going to ask you last time, but you already went to work by that time, so I called Grandpa."
Hearing this, Kevin’s doubts were dispelled. He then replied, "Next time, just call me directly."
He knew that Grandpa Harper was always trying to bring him together with Jessie. Even the idea of her throwing herself at him last time was Grandpa Harper’s plan. Who knew what he would say next time?
"But aren’t you busy with work?"
He was at a loss for words. It was true that he told her he was busy with work before and didn’t want to be disturbed by trivial matters, so he didn’t say anything more.
After dinner, Jessie went to the balcony, wanting to enjoy the breeze as usual.
Kevin took two bottles of cocktails from the fridge and headed to the balcony. "Do you want a drink?"
She chuckled and teased, "Mr. Harper, aren’t you afraid I’ll get drunk and throw myself at you?"
"No." He shook his head, "I have a good tolerance for alcohol."
His words were implying that even if she got drunk and tried to throw herself at him, he would be sober enough to prevent it from happening.
She didn’t say anything more. The two of them sat on the balcony, drinking their cocktails in silence.
Kevin was naturally reserved and didn’t talk much, and since they didn’t really have much affection for each other as a couple, they both drank in silence without speaking.
"How’s your mom doing?"
He broke the silence first. He knew that after the last incident, Jessie must be worried about Laura.
"She’s doing well. My stepdad hasn’t been back for a while, so she has been quite relaxed."
After speaking, they fell into silence again.
"By the way, is Grandpa Harper living far away from us? It seems like he rarely comes to the city. Even when he does, it seems to take him a long drive."
She had heard Grandpa Harper mention before that their home was in the suburbs, but she wasn’t interested in getting to know the Harper family as she knew they would divorce in half a year. Why bother worrying about things like that?
"About an hour’s drive; not too far, not too close."
Grandpa Harper enjoyed a peaceful life. He would sometimes be planting flowers, plants, and vegetables in the backyard of the old house, so he seldom came to the city. It was only because of Jessie, his new granddaughter-in-law, that he came more often.
Moreover, they could live anywhere they wanted to as they had properties all over Grace City.
Grandpa Harper had told Jessie before that that their family did farming involving plenty of land, so it made sense that they lived in the countryside.
After a few drinks, her cheeks were a little flushed, but she was still conscious. She examined Kevin under the moonlight.
He noticed her looking at him and became somewhat defensive. "What’s wrong?"
She smiled softly, "Mr. Harper is truly handsome, charming to all. Whoever marries you in the future, they would probably lose half of their anger just by glancing at your handsome face when in an argument."
"In the future?" Kevin slightly furrowed his brow.
‘She wants me to marry someone else in the future?’ Kevin felt a bit uncomfortable inside.
Jessie didn’t notice the change in his expression and nodded. "Yes, I know Mr. Harper doesn’t have feelings for me. Luckily, I don’t have any thoughts about Mr. Harper either. We have no feelings for each other—perhaps if we do divorce in half a year, you will certainly marry someone else."
"Marriage definitely involves having children, but doing those things will feel more like torture than enjoyment for a couple with no affection for each other. So about the great-grandchild, I can only apologize to Grandpa. We won’t be having kids."
Hearing her words, he felt even more uncomfortable. However, he didn’t say anything and only drank some more while feeling a bit sad.
"Mr. Harper, did you always think I was a manipulative woman before?"
Intoxicated now, she spoke more bluntly and boldly.
He glanced at her, feeling somewhat embarrassed that his thoughts were being laid bare. However, she didn’t mind and continued talking.
"Actually, when we got married, it was a business arrangement. Mr. Harper could avoid Grandpa’s nagging about marriage, and I could move out from my mom’s place to ease her burden a bit."
Kevin acknowledged with a hum. Initially, he married Jessie precisely to stop his Grandpa’s urging. But now, he felt that his intentions might have changed.
"Honestly, Mr. Harper is very good-looking. I’m sure many people would pay to spend a night with you."
"Jessie!" He abruptly stood up.
How could a girl speak so bluntly?
She shrugged, unfazed. "I’m just saying. It’s not like I’m actually going to pay to sleep with you. Besides, you look like you come with a high price tag."
In his lifetime, she was the first to joke about paying to sleep with him.
"Alright, sit down. I’m not going to eat you up." She patted the spot next to her.
He hesitated for a moment before sitting down, deliberately keeping some distance from her.
"Mr. Harper, do you know anyone from Harper Group?"
"Why do you ask?" Kevin thought Jessie might have sensed something, but then she responded with a smile.
"Just gossip. Remember when President Harper from Harper Group and Miss Rossi made headlines? She openly and boldly confessed her love to him! I really admire her for being so brave in expressing her feelings. Pursuing someone you love isn’t embarrassing, right?"
"Also, I have to thank Miss Rossi. If she hadn’t paid to suppress the news, the articles about me would have spread everywhere. So I wish her success in her pursuit and happiness."
She admired Julia’s character. Logically, someone of her status should care deeply about her every word and action, but she chose to confess her love in a public manner.
Kevin’s face darkened as he listened to his wife’s words.
His own wife was hoping that another woman would pursue him—he wondered if she would feel the same way if she knew the truth.
"So, do you know how things are going between them? Does President Harper even like her a little?"
"No, not at all." Kevin quickly distanced himself from any connection to Julia.
