Chapter 69: Helping Him Buy Clothes
Chapter 69: Helping Him Buy Clothes
Buy clothes for him? Kevin didn’t initially think about that. If his shirts were torn or dirty, he would just toss them away. He wasn’t concerned about spending a bit of money.
With Jessie offering to buy clothes for him, he naturally wouldn’t refuse.
Once he put on the clothes she had bought for him to work, Adam would definitely be envious.
Seeing him agree, she quickly added, "By the way, Mr. Harper, my wallet’s not that full, so I can’t afford any name brands. But I promise I’ll pick something nice."
She had a clear understanding of her own capabilities. She wouldn’t pretend to be someone she wasn’t by buying things she couldn’t afford.
"Okay," Kevin nodded.
Although he usually wore tailor-made clothes, he would still definitely wear what Jessie was going to buy for him.
After sitting together on the balcony for a while, they bid each other goodnight and went to bed.
The next morning, Jessie decided to go to the mall so she could pick out some clothes. However, she suddenly realized she forgot to ask for Kevin’s size.
She originally wanted to ask him, but she remembered him mentioning that he was very busy
with work and didn’t like being disturbed.
Thus, she took the decision to call Grandpa Harper, who answered the phone with a cheerful tone.
"Jessie, is there something you need from Grandpa?"
"Good morning, Grandpa. I wanted to ask about Kevin’s clothing size."
"Why do you need to know that? Didn’t that boy tell you himself?" He sensed something was off.
She was calling him just to ask about Kevin—did it mean that these two were starting to understand each other and bond emotionally?
"I promised to buy some clothes for him, but I forgot to ask for his size. He went to work this morning, and I didn’t want to disturb him," She explained honestly.
Grandpa Harper was a bit surprised that Kevin agreed to let her buy clothes for him. He was relieved that his grandson was finally showing some understanding.
After telling her Kevin’s size, Grandpa Harper gave her a few words of advice before hanging up.
He knew his grandson would eventually fall for her. After all, he hadn’t forgotten about the time Kevin had flaunted his lunchbox in front of Adam.
It seemed like the day he would have a great-grandchild was approaching soon.
Jessie used the hints Grandpa Harper gave her to buy several shirts and jackets for Kevin. After that, she headed to Laura’s place. Laura had taken Luke out grocery shopping early in the morning, so Jessie planned to visit them a bit later and went to her shop first.
It was rare not to see Lilian. She thought maybe Lilian had finally been caught and put to work. However, she then heard the familiar voice of her friend.
"Jessie!"
She opened the shop door with a mixture of surprise and defeat. "You really have nothing to do, running to my place every day."
As soon as she said that, she noticed Steve following behind Lilian. She nodded politely as a greeting.
"I do have things to do! I’m accompanying Boss to meet clients," Lilian said, making herself comfortable on the sofa.
Steve walked into the back kitchen. "Is there anything I can help with?"
"No, you’re fine. Just sit down. Have you both eaten? I’ll bring some sandwiches over in a bit."
"Sure, extra bacon for me!" Lilian raised her hand.
"Got it."
With that, Jessie went to the back kitchen to get busy. She placed the clothes she had purchased on the table. Steve quickly noticed that they were shirts for men, and he couldn’t help but feel a bit excited.
After he had saved her last time, she did mention wanting to repay him. Could this be a gift for him?
Lilian soon noticed them as well. Without noticing the hopeful look in his eyes, she asked directly, "Jessie, are those shirts for Mr. Harper?"
"Yes, his shirts are worn out, so I bought him a few."
Jessie’s reply from the kitchen immediately crushed Steve’s last bit of hope.
He had liked Jessie since their school days and had been trying to get her contact details through friends. When he finally did, he found out she had changed her number. Once they finally reconnected, she was already married.
Noticing his downcast expression, Lilian asked, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing."
Even after eating the sandwiches, his mood didn’t improve much.
After saying goodbye to Jessie, Lilian left with Steve to head back to the office. Then, he suddenly asked her a question.
"Do Jessie and her husband have a good relationship?"
"Why do you ask?" Lilian was puzzled.
Steve smiled, "Nothing really. I helped Jessie before, and she mentioned inviting me over for a meal. She’s said she’s a great cook, and I’d really like to try it. But it hasn’t happened, so I just keep thinking about it."
Hearing this, Lilian nodded and smiled. "Don’t worry, I’ll mention it to Jessie later. We’re all such good friends; she can just make something simple for us."
He nodded, not saying anything more. After walking a bit further, he couldn’t stop himself from asking another question.
"Does Jessie have a good relationship with her husband? Didn’t they have a flash marriage? I wouldn’t think there’s much of a foundation."
Growing up, he had prioritized studying and never got involved in romantic affairs. But the moment he saw Jessie, he finally understood what it meant to be truly moved by someone. Ever since then, she had become an unforgettable person in his mind.
Who would’ve thought that not long after contacting her again, she would suddenly get into a marriage?
He wanted her to be happy, but deep down, he hoped he could be the one to do that for her.
"They seem to get along well. Mr. Harper is a bit reserved and not very talkative, but he’s always there to help Jessie when she has a problem. I think he’s quite responsible, and I hope they develop feelings for each other. If not, they did sign an agreement to separate in six months if there are no feelings."
Hearing this, Steve’s hope was reignited.
Lilian sensed something was off, turning to look at him.
"Why are you so concerned about Jessie’s relationship?"
"Just curious. Jessie is my friend too, so I naturally care." He maintained a neutral expression.
He would never let his subordinate know about his secret feelings for Jessie.
"Besides, she is very outstanding; she deserves someone equally impressive and kind. If that man isn’t good to her, it’s better to divorce early than to waste time."
She agreed with Steve, but...
"I think Mr. Harper will fall for Jessie sooner or later. She’s so wonderful; anyone who doesn’t see that must be blind."
While he agreed, he hoped that wouldn’t happen. Thus, he held his feelings back.
