Chapter 66: Someone to Lean On
"Don’t worry. Since I’ve decided to do this, I’m not afraid of arguing with him." Laura patted Jessie’s hand, signaling her not to worry.
"No, I’m taking you back." Jessie picked up the backpack from the sofa.
She knew William’s personality very well, so she just could not let Laura go back alone with Luke; it left her feeling uneasy.
Seeing her insistence, Laura couldn’t say much and had to agree.
"Jessie, I’ve thought it through. If I really end up divorcing your stepdad and taking Luke with me, I might need more of your help in the future."
But this was only temporary. Laura believed in her own abilities and was confident she could stand up again.
Hearing this, Jessie felt even more heartbroken. "Mom, what are you saying? How could I ever leave you if you needed help? Kevin also said he would help with anything, anytime."
Laura nodded gently, her voice soft. "Truth be told, Kevin is a very trustworthy person. You must cherish your relationship with him. A woman needs to have her own career and never believe a man’s sweet talk about taking care of you. Understand? Only by holding your own financial power can you have confidence."
She had gone through this herself. Despite having a good career back then, she had given it up for William. Now, she regretted it deeply.
"Don’t worry, Mom," Jessie agreed, understanding this well herself.
When they reached downstairs, Jessie hugged Luke and walked Laura inside, wary that William might get physical with Laura.
If he dared to lay a hand on her, she would fight them back tooth and nail.
As soon as the door opened, William rushed out of the kitchen while scolding, "So you finally know how to come back! One might think you..."
But when he saw Jessie, he clammed up and stopped his sentence midway.
He didn’t criticize Laura in front of Jessie, but it wasn’t because he was scared of the latter; he was just wary of Kevin, who was tall and strong. In a physical fight, he wasn’t sure he would be able to win.
Laura didn’t even glance at William, telling Jessie to be careful on her way back, then directly turning with Luke to go inside.
Facing Laura’s indifference, he grew even more furious and planned to lash out at her once Jessie left.
Seeing his angry demeanor, Jessie could see right through him.
"Uncle William, my mom has been with you for several years. She has worked tirelessly and helped out so much, yet you still draw such clear boundaries as if she’s taking advantage of you. But tell me, when my mom carried Luke for nine long months through a hard pregnancy, how do you plan to ’draw the line’ there? How do you ’draw the line’ with the scar from that surgery on her stomach?
"If you really want to be so fair, should Luke’s last name change every day, yours one day, my mom’s the next? Would that be fairer?
"Uncle William, marriage requires joint effort. You see my mom staying home every day, but whenever you return home from work, there’s always a hot meal and a clean, ironed shirt for the next day. Moreover, the house is tidy; these things don’t just magically happen. Luke is young and needs constant care—it’s exhausting for her.
"If you still feel shortchanged, why not let my mom work while you stay home to care for Luke? Then you’d understand how tough her job truly is."
Jessie stood up for Laura, giving William no chance to argue.
Knowing he couldn’t win an argument against Jessie, he chose to remain silent and returned to the kitchen despite still seething inside.
Jessie knew Laura hadn’t fully set her mind on divorce yet. Without a job, winning custody of Luke could become a problem. But once Laura made a decision, Jessie would be her strongest support.
After Jessie left, William looked at the mess in the kitchen. All the anger from a day of working hard at the company, gone unacknowledged with not even a hot meal to return to, irritated him further. Most importantly, he didn’t even know how to cook.
"Laura, come out here!" He was so furious that he kicked open the bedroom door, finding Laura lying on the bed and casually scrolling through her phone.
He angrily grabbed her arm, dragging her from the bedroom.
"I’m out there making money, and you do nothing, not even cook! You’ve got some nerves, don’t you?"
Laura glared at him despite the pain. "Let go of me, William!"
Startled by her fierce gaze, he hesitated. Just then, she took the opportunity to bite his arm. The sharp pain made him scream out, "Let go!"
As soon as he pulled back, she grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself as she glared at him fiercely.
"I told you; if you dared to hit me, I won’t let it go!"
Seeing her with the knife, he felt a tinge of fear as he cautiously stepped back.
"Have you gone insane?"
"That’s right! I’ve gone mad, William. If you had any conscience, you wouldn’t have laid a finger on me! You were the one who drove me to this!"
Not far away downstairs, Jessie heard the commotion and rushed back up, witnessing the scene. Seeing Laura’s disheveled hair, she immediately knew William had gotten physical first.
"Mom, are you okay?"
With Jessie by her side, Laura grew more confident. The Krut family, alerted, arrived and scolded Laura when they saw the wound on William’s arm.
"Laura, have you lost your mind, wielding a knife around? Can’t you talk it out?" Evelyn couldn’t bear the sight of her son’s bleeding arm.
Mandy angrily exclaimed, "Laura, you got married to William, and you’ve been enjoying his resources while he works so hard. Despite that, he has to cook for himself? What wife does that? It’s outrageous!
"He only slapped you in the heat of the moment; can’t you be forgiving and take it? William works hard at the company, and you’re not even earning any money for the household. How dare you lay a hand on him?"
Hearing Mandy’s words, Robert frowned deeply and softly rebuked her, "Shut your mouth!"
Such talk might be okay privately, but not with Jessie around; she wasn’t a person they could mess with.
Jessie scoffed at them and immediately stood up for Laura. "Wasn’t it my mom working hard at home all these years, caring for him and Luke? Don’t forget, it was Uncle William who insisted on creating boundaries so clearly. If everything needs such clarity, then household chores shouldn’t be exempted, right?"
