Chapter 65: Win His Stomach
Chapter 65: Win His Stomach
Lilian saw Jessie step out and guessed that she must be on the phone with Kevin.
When it came to finding a partner, she did admire Jessie for her courage to rush into marriage with a stranger. If it were her, she would never dare to do so.
But at least for now, Kevin seemed much more responsible and reliable compared to William. Whenever Jessie encountered troubles, Kevin was always there to support her, unlike William, who always ran from his responsibilities. In this regard, Kevin was far superior.
However, thinking about the agreement between Kevin and Jessie, she couldn’t help but worry about Jessie’s future.
On the other side, Jessie thought the call was lagging and kept trying to talk to Kevin.
“Hello? Mr. Harper, can you hear me? Is there a lag on your end? Why is your voice cutting out?”
The call wasn’t lagging out—Kevin simply didn’t know what to say. After a while, all he managed to say was a single word.
“I can hear you.”
If he hadn’t spoken up in time, she was just about to hang up.
“Mr. Harper, did you call me for something?”
He fell silent, unable to come up with an excuse because he himself didn’t know why he had called her.
“What are we going to eat for dinner tonight?”
After thinking for a long time, he could only ask this question.
Hearing this, she couldn’t help but laugh out as she asked, “Mr. Harper, did you just call me to ask about this?”
“Yeah,” he replied, feeling a bit embarrassed as he listened to her laughter.
“Is there anything specific you want to eat? I can make something delicious for you since you’ve helped me so much. The least I can do for you is make you a grand meal. But just a heads up, if you want anything like shark fin soup or king crab, I’m afraid I can’t afford it. Try to pick something not too expensive.”
Kevin almost wanted to laugh. She talked about making him a grand meal, all the while asking him not to choose anything too expensive. This contradiction was something only Jessie could say.
However, his wife’s offering to make him a big meal was a kind gesture. Jessie would be the one busy preparing everything, and he, as the one to enjoy the meal, shouldn’t complain.
The happiness of a family needed both parties to work together. She was already tired of managing her little shop, but she was still willing to cook for him at night, so he should be grateful for that.
After a brief chat, Kevin hung up the call despite still feeling somewhat unsettled.
Jessie’s cooking was meant as gratitude for his help, but what about the cake for Chris? She had made that specially for him.
Feeling a lack of special treatment, he frowned slightly. But he would never bring this up to her.
He looked at his phone on the table and felt more confused about his actions. Why did he call her just now?
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Adam noticed Kevin was seemingly preoccupied, confused.
“What’s on your mind? Not feeling great?”
Today, he had also heard from Chris that Kevin suddenly seemed unhappy.
“It’s nothing to do with you. What have you got for me?”
“The Rossi Family’s heiress came looking for you, saying she has a big project to bring over. She specifically wants to meet you to sign it. Want to see her?” Adam teased with raised eyebrows.
“Out!” Kevin snapped. “You get out, and tell her to leave too!”
“Alright, alright,” Adam mumbled a couple of words and left directly.
Kevin found Julia’s way of pursuit extremely distasteful. He couldn’t help but wish it were Jessie who was visiting instead. Realizing this, he was startled by his own thoughts.
Was he out of his mind just now?
He took a sip of the coffee on his desk, forcing himself to focus on the documents in front of him.
Returning from her call, Jessie was met with Lilian’s teasing.
“Look at you two, newlywed life is truly different!”
“What nonsense are you talking about?” Jessie pinched Lilian’s cheek and turned to Laura, asking, “Mom, you and Luke haven’t eaten yet, right? Let me get you something to eat.”
Since ordering takeout frequently would be too expensive, her shop had a small kitchen made for cooking. She would sometimes cook there to handle meals simply.
“You’ve been busy all morning; let me go instead,” Laura said, handing Luke over to Jessie for care.
There was a mall nearby, so it was a good chance to go shopping.
As soon as Laura left, Lilian couldn’t help pulling Jessie down to sit and asking eagerly, “Come on, tell me what he wanted. Is he missing you already?”
Jessie waved her hand, finding it funny herself. “He asked what I planned to cook for dinner.”
Hearing this, Lilian’s eyes lit up. “Jessie, have you ever heard the saying, ‘To win a man’s heart, you need to win his stomach’? You’re halfway there!”
“What nonsense. I should talk to Steve and get him to give you more work so you don’t fool around all day.”
As for her and Kevin, emotions should naturally follow their own course. Forcing it wouldn’t help anything.
If she were too forward, he might even suspect her motives.
However, that kiss today did surprise her. His age and looks would suggest he was the experienced type, but he was so innocent about relationships. She considered herself lucky.
No wonder Grandpa Harper was in such a hurry to find him a partner. With his nature, he could have really ended up alone.
It wasn’t about him being unable to marry, but more about his indifference toward relationships.
“By the way, I should really thank Mr. Harper for helping me with my troublesome relatives. Do you think only cooking dinner would be too little? Should I get him a gift? I can’t afford anything too expensive, and I’ve never really picked out gifts for men, so I don’t know what he likes.”
Though they had spent some time together, her understanding of Kevin was still quite shallow.
“That’s easy. I’ll have Steve come over sometime soon, and you can ask him. Men are typically quite similar.”
Jessie nodded, thinking it made sense.
When Laura returned, William called her while unleashing a storm of insults, complaining about his hardship while she lived off of him without cooking.
She ended the call without a response, assuring the others not to worry.
Before leaving, Jessie was a bit uneasy. “Mom, I’ll go back with you. If we need to, I’ll bring Kevin along.”
