Chapter 64: Divorce Is Near

"He gives me only a small amount of living expenses every month, and now he even wants me to look after his sister’s kids. Luke is my own child, so no matter how tired I am, I’m willing to do it. But his sister’s two kids aren’t mine; why should I take care of them? If anything happens, they will only blame me again." Laura got more and more upset as she spoke.

Although there were two kids in Mandy’s family, both she and her husband were working. They didn’t have a mortgage to pay, so they weren’t under such economic pressure. Despite that, she still found ways to make William spend money on her every day.

While it was true that a brother may want to give money to his sister, should he not also consider his own family’s needs?

If William had money for Mandy, why not save it to pay off the house loan? Once Luke grows up more, there will eventually be school fees and tutoring expenses that require advanced planning.

Lilian was shocked by what she heard and said, "What kind of sister is she? Still thinking about using her brother’s money despite her current situation; that’s too much! Aunt Laura, you have to talk to Uncle William. You need to take care of your own family. Luke is still young right now, but as he gets older, expenses will only increase."

Laura sighed deeply. "I’ve talked to him about this many times. He always says I’m being too calculating and that it’s just his sister. He doesn’t count how much his sister has taken from him, but he calculates how much I spend every day. I don’t know who’s benefiting from this more, him or me."

She regretted being blinded by the so-called love and selling her small shop to become a full-time housewife at home.

Her bets had been placed on the wrong person. A woman without her own source of income would be looked down upon by her in-laws, and she would even lose confidence when arguing with her husband.

Her only consolation was that she had a daughter, Jessie, who sent her money every month to help out and make her life more manageable.

At the same time, she felt guilty toward Jessie. In her chase for happiness, she ended up making her daughter suffer.

On the other hand, Jessie didn’t think too much about it, patting Laura on the shoulder to comfort her. "Mom, don’t think about it so much. I think you should go find a job and make your own income. That way, they can’t treat you badly."

Laura nodded in agreement as she had also been thinking of doing this lately.

"I’m not trying to sound harsh here, but you’re with someone like him who doesn’t even treat you well—you’re just a free babysitter to him, Mom. If it doesn’t work out, you should get a divorce. But if you want custody over Luke, you need to have your own income."

She knew that there was a long period when William couldn’t earn much before this, relying on his mother’s savings. Now, since Luke was their only son, there was no way he would give up custody of Luke.

Lilian nodded in agreement. "Yes, Aunt Laura, we need to learn to cut our losses in time."

Hearing what Laura had to say was very surprising. If it were her, she probably wouldn’t be able to stand it for even a day and would file for a divorce immediately. Laura’s endurance was impressive.

Laura glanced at Luke, who was being very well-behaved. She sighed, "Luke is still young. I have to wait until he starts school to say anything, and I can also find a job by then."

She believed in her own abilities. Before she had gotten married, she worked in sales and was once the top performer at the store. Later on, she resigned and opened her own little shop to spend more time with Jessie.

"What worries me now is that his sister will say something when the time comes to bring her two kids over. I told him that if they want the kids to come here for school, he would need to transfer the house. He doesn’t see the problem at all, thinking that there’s nothing wrong with this."

She frowned. "He doesn’t mind transferring the house over and making it a part of the Krut family. It wouldn’t even be related to me at all anymore, when I was the one who had spent twenty thousand on the house’s renovation!"

"In any case, I made it clear to him that if he insists on doing it, then we will get a divorce. At that time, they will need to repay the renovation costs by themselves."

Jessie nodded. "Mom, I support you. If it comes to that, you can come live with us. I’ll discuss it with Kevin."

The house was large and had several spare rooms, but since Kevin was the one who bought it, she needed to discuss it with him first.

Laura waved away her offer and refused, "That’s your home with Kevin. I won’t disturb you. When the time comes, I’ll just look for suitable places to rent; that would be a good plan, too."

She felt that her divorce wasn’t that far off. After all, she had seen the change in William’s attitude toward her.

Before this, she used to think she could put up with everything for the sake of her child, but his actions were getting more and more outrageous. He even drove Jessie away and wanted to bring his sister’s two kids over.

Why should she tolerate all that?

Especially so with the past incidents where his first reaction was to clear off any of his relations with it and distance himself, worried she would take advantage of him.

Thinking about all this, Laura’s eyes filled up with tears.

She was too naive, thinking she had found a man as good as Jessie’s father. However, living with William showed her the vast difference that existed between people. She was completely disheartened.

Lilian pouted and said, "Marriage is scary."

"What are you saying? It depends on the person. Auntie believes you will have better luck and find a good man. Moreover, aren’t you at your prime age now? You should think about settling down," Laura said and patted Lilian’s hand gently.

Hearing Laura bring up marriage at this time, Jessie couldn’t help but shake her head. “Alright, Mom, Lilian is already being pressured enough by her family urging her. Don’t add more to her plate."

Hearing her words, Lilian gave her a grateful look. free.w e bn.ov(e)l(.)com

"When I do get married, I want someone tall, strong, and handsome! Preferably with an eight-pack and looks that rival young Leonardo DiCaprio. He would fall in love with me at first sight and marry me while defying his family’s objections. It would be the creation of a grand, epic romance."

Talking about it brought stars to Lilian’s eyes.

Laura glanced at her and whispered to Jessie, "What’s up with Lilian?"

Her ideals seemed so unrealistic.

"She has read one too many novels." Jessie winked.

"I can hear you talking about me!" Lilian crossed her arms. "No other criteria; as long as he looks as handsome as Jessie’s husband, I’ll be satisfied."

Mentioning Kevin made Jessie think of him. To be fair, he was good-looking and had a great physique.

Just as he had mentioned, her phone rang. It was a call from him.

She stepped outside to answer it. "Mr. Harper, is there something you needed?"

"I..." Kevin hesitated a few times, unable to find the right words.

He had just finished some work and, in his free moment, wanted to call Jessie.
