Chapter 63: Miss Rossi
Chapter 63: Miss Rossi
He was Jessie’s genuine husband. Even Chris received cakes from her, so why didn’t he get any?
Even if they were trying new products, shouldn’t he be the first to try them as her rightful husband?
He couldn’t bring himself to ask Jessie for fear it might hurt his pride, but he was indeed upset.
He felt like she didn’t care about him at all!
At this moment, Jessie was still busy in the shop. Some of the new customers were ones who came under Chris’s recommendation. She was quite grateful to Chris for bringing in a good amount of business.
Lilian arrived at the shop and saw Jessie finally taking a break after being busy for a while. She sipped her coffee and remarked, “Jessie, your shop’s business has been booming lately. Is it because those netizens are feeling guilty for slandering you online, so now they’re coming to support your business?”
Jessie shook her head. “How’s that possible? All these customers were brought in by my brother-in-law. Last time, he mentioned that my cakes were delicious and his friends asked him about it, so many have come to buy from me.”
“Are your brother-in-law’s friends all uncles and aunties?” Lilian frowned, noticing that there weren’t any young people around; only elders.
This wasn’t Chris’s fault. Most of his friends came from wealthy families, and they wouldn’t typically shop for such items themselves. Thus, they would instead have their household staff buy them.
Jessie scratched her head, acknowledging her lack of knowledge on the matter.
“Maybe it’s their parents. Anyway, why are you free enough to visit me every day lately?”
Lilian laid her head on the table and explained, “My boss heard about what you went through online and was worried about you, so he permitted me to take paid leave for a few days to give you some company!”
She beamed by the end of her sentence.
“He’s so nice to you,” Jessie noted, sitting down beside Lilian.
It was indeed rare to see bosses who gave paid leave so generously. A boss like Steve was truly hard to find.
“Absolutely. By the way, did you see the news? The news about your family and the gossip about the Harper family’s young master have been going head-to-head in the spotlight!” Lilian said while pulling out her phone for Jessie to see. She continued, “I’ve heard that when your relatives were slandering you online, Miss Rossi wasn’t pleased that they were hogging all the media attention, so she paid people to bring down the news’s popularity.”
Jessie couldn’t help but laugh after hearing this. “I should really thank Miss Rossi. If she hadn’t diverted the netizens’ attention by spending money, even this little shop of mine would’ve been scrutinized thoroughly. Anyway, I’ve collected all the evidence I need now, so I don’t care if the popularity drops. Just let it be.”
She didn’t have the means to financially compete with Julia.
“But your news hasn’t lost its popularity at all. Is someone paying for it behind the scenes?” Lilian asked curiously.
“I don’t know, but let’s not worry about it. I now understand how terrifying the internet can be. Remember when we criticized Mr. Harper back then? Let’s never do that again, or we might end up becoming a hot topic ourselves.” Jessie shuddered involuntarily as she spoke.
Those people in power were miles apart from regular folks like them.
Lilian waved her hand dismissively. “We only pulled a few jokes. Is speaking out not allowed now? It’s fine; no one will know. Besides, Mr. Harper has been known to always avoid women for so long; maybe there really is something behind the scenes.”
“Though I think business marriages are inevitable. Given that Harper and Rossi Group are major corporations, their alliance could be formidable.”
Hearing this, Jessie had some sympathy. “That’s a bit pitiful. Marrying only for gains—wouldn’t it be quite sad if you were to marry someone you didn’t love?”
Lilian couldn’t help but tease as she heard this. “What, are you saying you and your Mr. Harper are on good terms now?”
Realizing she had been tricked, Jessie gave Lilian a sidelong glance before she waved the joke off. “Alright, stop teasing me; at least I’m already married. What about you? Aren’t they pestering you to get married?”
As for Kevin, especially after this incident, she saw him as a more dependable person.
When it came to marriage pressure, Lilian put on a defeated look. “Don’t even mention it; my mom has been nagging me nonstop, and she even suggested my boss to be a possible match for me! How could I ever be with him? That would be so weird.”
“Why not? I think Steve is a pretty good guy.”
“He is, but I don’t see him that way. We’re just friends.” The thought of her being together with Steve made Lilian shudder.
“Oh, right. I finished the little toy you asked me to knit last time,” Jessie said as she got up to take a plush doll from her bag.
Lilian had seen it a while ago and liked it a lot, originally wanting to buy one. However, the only way to get such a doll was to make it by herself. Unfortunately, she was clumsy with her hands, so she had to ask Jessie for help.
Her eyes lit up as she hugged Jessie’s arm. “Jessie, you’re amazing! Handicrafts like this are quite expensive now. Why don’t you sell them online or in your store to pass the time? You might get bored if you’re only selling cakes.”
Jessie took that suggestion to heart. Lilian was right; she could sell some handmade dolls online. It would be something productive to do, and she could even offer them as little gifts to attract more customers.
“Lilian, you’re a genius,” she praised, immediately ordering some colorful yarn online. She still had leftover material from helping Lilian last time, so it was a perfect amount to make a small doll.
“Jessie.”
Laura’s voice came from the door, making Jessie stand up and go over to help carry Luke. “Mom, how come you’re here? I was planning to visit you later.”
Smiling and sitting down, Laura replied, “I was out for a walk with Luke. He wanted to see you, so we stopped by.”
Looking at her expression, Jessie had a feeling that something was bothering her.
“Mom, did Uncle William argue with you again?”
Seeing how Jessie hit the nail on the head, Laura sighed deeply, “Your stepfather brought his sister over again, wanting to discuss last time’s issues and demanding me to cook. I refused to do it, and after an argument, I left the house.”
She had been hardworking and selfless for so many years, yet the Krut family was still trying to take advantage of her. She decided it was time for her to stand firm; otherwise, they might think she was a pushover.
“Don’t be upset, Aunt Laura. They’re just bullying you.” Lilian expressed some sympathy.
She once thought William’s family treated them well, but now she saw how fast human nature could change.
However, she still admired Laura’s bravery in pursuing her true love. Still, love and marriage were two different things.
Alas, an unhappy marriage was truly only a shackle.
