Chapter 55: Uncle Reed

Chapter 55: Uncle Reed

Adam was quite helpless. Was he really here to help, or was he just here to get a full dose of PDA?

"Kevin, after all the help I’ve given you this time, you had better repay me properly!" he gritted his teeth.

As a senior personal secretary in the Harper family, he was constantly helping Kevin investigate matters about Jessie all these days.

Absolutely not! His pride wouldn’t allow it.

"I’ll triple your bonus," Kevin said impassively.

"Ha!" Adam scoffed, looking disdainful. "Do you think I need your money?"

Kevin thought for a moment. Indeed, he was right. The Lambert family was also quite wealthy. Adam didn’t need to work for him for money.

"So, what do you want?" fre/ew.ebnovel.c om

Adam raised an eyebrow and smiled. "See, even this good brother of yours has been single for so long. Doesn’t your wife have any friends..."

Before he could finish his sentence, Kevin hung up the phone directly.

Adam looked at the beeping phone with rage. Did he just hang up on him? All he did was talk about Jessie for a bit!

After Kevin hung up the phone, he returned to Jessie, who had bought some snacks and handed them to him. free\we\bnov(e)(l).com

"You must be hungry since you’ve been driving for a long time. Eat some snacks first."

He glanced at the junk food he never usually ate, but his stomach was indeed empty. He took a couple of bites of bread before stopping.

There was still a long way before they would arrive in Jessie’s old hometown.

Jessie hadn’t visited in a long time. Previously during summer vacations, Laura would tell her to visit her grandparents occasionally as she didn’t want her to feel a lack of familial affection.

On the other hand, Jessie used to think that she was the only one who got their malice. But when the Moores demanded money and came knocking, Laura realized her decision was wrong.

Even if they were going to cut contact with their relatives, it was better than constantly being drained dry by them.

Jessie didn’t have many memories of her grandparents. What stood out was their cold stares every time she went home, as if she might eat a piece of meat too many or take up too much space.

She never felt the warmth of family and grew more reluctant to return home.

As her grandparents’ biological granddaughter, she should have received the care of her elders, but all she faced were cold sneers.

Back then, they thought that Jessie and Laura were easy to bully due to them being women. Thus, their behavior was even more shameless.

Her grandparents were not well-educated, with their curses always coming out dirty and unpleasant.

At first, Jessie and Laura came here because they wanted to pay respects to the grave of Jessie’s biological father. However, not only did Grandpa and Grandma Moore refuse to take them there, but they also directly drove them out while shouting, "What’s the use of having money-losing wretches like you come here?"

They even instructed their children to seize what Jessie’s father had left behind.

On returning to her old hometown, Jessie found that a lot had changed since she was young. However, she was still familiar with the way to her cousins’ new home—each of them was a single-family villa, all decorated in a luxurious manner. It was clear they were affluent landlords in this area.

Arriving at her former residence, though it had been renovated, the traces of the past were still visible. Memories surged as Jessie felt tears forming in her eyes.

If that drunk driver hadn’t crashed into them, would her father have been unharmed? Would their family of three have been happy?

She held back her sobs, refusing to cry aloud. Kevin, silently accompanying her, saw this and understood these memories were painful for Jessie. He had an urge to comfort her and be her support.

A worker passing by paused when he saw her, scanning her up and down before exclaiming in excitement, "Aren’t you Jessie?"

Jessie quickly turned away to wipe her tears, nodding as she said, "Yes. Uncle Reed, it’s been so long."

The man in the worker’s uniform was one of her father’s friends who used to care for her.

"You’ve grown a lot, Jessie. What brings you back today? Come on, come to my place for a cup of tea, and we’ll catch up."

Reed warmly invited her, noticing her gaze linger on the villas ahead. He explained, "Oh, right. Your second cousin’s wife is about to give birth. They’re planning to send the child to school in the city and even buy a house there. They already have so many houses, but they’re still unsatisfied. Why buy more?"

"I saw them drive off grandly the other day, as if trying to show off their wealth."

"Ordinarily, you don’t see those cousins caring much for your grandparents. But when it’s about money, they’re quick to butter them up. Now that they’re older, your grandparents easily get swayed by them."

Reed didn’t use smart devices much anymore since he was getting old, so he was unaware of Jessie’s recent online fame.

Jessie frowned. "Uncle Reed, do they really not visit Grandpa and Grandma often?"

Reed shook his head. "They rarely do. They usually come on holidays, but they don’t stay long. Besides, your grandparents receive a monthly pension. When your father had his accident, they got a fair share of the money, so they can live comfortably with plenty to spare."

"Despite that, your grandfather thinks his children are particularly filial. In my eyes, they don’t hold a candle to your father. If it weren’t for..."

He paused, noticing Kevin. "And who is he?"

Reed always had an inkling that Jessie’s relatives had taken the compensation money belonging to Jessie’s father, starting their own businesses with it. Otherwise, it would have been her father who found success.

Unfortunately, those relatives were heartless people—not only did they take the money, but they even drove Jessie and Laura out after seizing her father’s house.

Seeing Jessie return filled him with happiness, but there was nothing he could do about her selfish relatives.

"This is my husband, Mr. Harper," Jessie introduced.

Hearing this, Reed smiled warmly. "Jessie, you’ve gotten married? That’s wonderful. This young man seems decent. Your father would be proud if he knew."

"But I’m still upset. If only your father were here. Seeing how much you’ve been mistreated, he might even come back and avenge you!"

People always claimed there was justice in the world, but horrible people still seemed to live well.

Kevin greeted Reed, turning on the recording function of his phone as he joined Jessie at Reed’s house. The family was very welcoming, urging Jessie to eat.

"Jessie, eat more. Look how thin you’ve become."
