Chapter 56: The Plan

After dinner, Reed quietly reminded, "Jessie, I’m glad to see you’re doing well now, but you should know better than anyone else what kind of people your relatives on your father’s side are. They’re the type who would chew you up and spit out the bones. If they find out you’re doing well, they will definitely try to take advantage of you."

After Jessie’s father had died, they had kicked Jessie and Laura out in worry they would ask for money.

What they did back then was truly disgraceful. The neighbors couldn’t help but gossip, but they also thought that since they wanted to continue living here, making too much of a scene about it wouldn’t be a good idea. Otherwise, Jessie wouldn’t have gotten a single penny.

Not only did Reed know all about what happened back then, but everyone around was also aware of it.

Kevin stood nearby and informed them about the trending live stream, hoping they would speak out and record a message to post online as crucial evidence against them.

Upon hearing his words, everyone fell silent in fear of trouble.

Jessie understood their concerns, shaking her head at Kevin as she thought about how people were just inherently selfish. Helping her wouldn’t benefit them, and if her relatives were to find out, they might cause trouble. Everyone was a neighbor and didn’t want things to get too ugly.

"Mr. Harper, I’ll go take pictures of my grandparents’ house; it could serve as evidence."

Kevin nodded, "Go ahead. I’m heading to the restroom and will meet you later."

"Okay."

After watching her leave, he turned to the people observing him and directly asked, "So, how much would it take for you to speak up?"

Everyone was stunned by this. All they knew was that he was Jessie’s husband, but now he was offering to pay them into speaking up?

That seemed a bit...

Moments later, everyone was counting the cash in their hands while cheerfully saying, "This is really nice."

With money in hand, everyone became more talkative and even started fighting to speak up, recounting the misdeeds of Jessie’s relatives. freew\e bnovel.com

Kevin recorded everything they said one by one.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Jessie took out her phone and snapped a few photos of their house, which reminded her of the times when her father was still alive.

Before she could shake off the wave of sadness, there was the sound of tires crunching against the ground from behind.

"Jessie!" Frankie’s voice came from behind.

Her body tensed up. She turned to see the towering figure of Frankie standing behind her, alongside a few uncles and her grandparents.

Grandpa Moore was even angrier when he saw her. He pointed a finger at her and sternly reprimanded her, "You ungrateful girl, how dare you hang up on me! What are you doing here? You act like spending a bit of money is going to kill you!"

Unlike his agitation, Frankie quickly regained his composure and assessed Jessie and the building behind her, suddenly coming to a realization.

"Grandpa! She’s trying to take pictures as evidence and post it online to make people criticize us!"

Upon hearing this, Grandpa Moore’s anger surged. He immediately rolled up his sleeves and yelled, "You wicked girl! How dare you be so malicious! Hand over your phone now!"

He put on an authoritative demeanor over his age. If it weren’t for his grandson’s suggestion that they come back and stay for a couple of days instead of burning money in a hotel, they might not have returned at all.

Unexpectedly, they had caught Jessie red-handed upon their return. It seemed even heaven was helping him!

Jessie took a step back, hiding her phone behind her. "Why should I? You blatantly accused us online! Didn’t you take all of my dad’s compensation money back then?"

Grandpa Moore wanted to retort, but Frankie intervened as he gently shook his head.

He stepped forward and said, "Jessie, we’re family. Besides, wasn’t some of the money given to you back then? All these years, we haven’t asked you to support your grandparents, right?"

Listening to his words, she couldn’t help but laugh inwardly. How thick-skinned did one have to be to say such things?

"Jessie, delete the photos from your phone and help your grandparents with the down payment—if you do that, we will let this go. We will also take the online stuff down. How about that?"

As he spoke, he took a few steps closer to her.

"Don’t come any closer!" She retreated.

There were so many of them, and she was alone. She regretted not bringing Kevin along with her.

Just then, a tall figure shielded her from behind. Kevin coldly glared at Frankie.

"She told you not to come closer. Didn’t you hear her?"

Although Frankie was quite tall, he couldn’t match the muscular Kevin, whose arms had bulging veins that were faintly visible. The sight made Frankie think twice.

But then, he recalled that he had more people on his side, so he felt brave again. "Jessie, we’re trying to talk nicely with you because we want to have a proper discussion."

Kevin, keeping Jessie protected behind him, maintained a cold expression.

Though she trusted his combat skills, the other party had so many people. She carefully tugged at his sleeve and whispered, "Mr. Harper..." .com

He glanced back and gave her a reassuring look that was somehow enough to calm her down.

"If you want money, no problem. We can give it to you."

Upon hearing that, not only Jessie but even Frankie was taken aback.

He had thought they would have to have a fight with Kevin, but he agreed so quickly?

Jessie looked at him incredulously, whispering, "Mr. Harper, are you crazy? Why would you compromise so fast?"

She knew he had a trick up his sleeve, but she never expected this.

Just as she was about to say something more, she saw him wink at her and was trying to communicate a message without speaking.

Understanding his plan, she immediately hung her head and stepped forward, pinching her thigh hard to squeeze out a couple of tears.

"Cousin, I’m sorry. My husband isn’t all there; we can pay the money. Please let us be and don’t get physical."

"What?" Frankie was startled for a moment, while Kevin behind her slightly frowned.

‘He’s not all there? Nevermind, I’ll let it go for now.’

She continued, "He just likes putting up a front and acting tough, but he’s really as soft as cotton candy and falls over with a breeze."

What? So this dude was only bluffing. Hearing this, Frankie squared his shoulders.

"We’re family, and we’re not asking for money for ourselves—it’s for your grandparents. If you’re willing to pay, then it’s settled."

With that, he was about to pat Jessie on the shoulder to make her admit her mistake. However, Jessie crouched down in fear as she trembled all over.

"Cousin, please... Please don’t hit me."
