Chapter 49: Captivating

Hearing his words, Jessie turned her head and looked at him seriously, her eyes shining a bit.

Kevin also gazed into her eyes. After a long stare, his cheeks flushed slightly as he couldn’t help himself from poking her forehead.

"Why are you looking at me like that? If I say I’ll do something, I will."

Laura was also his mother-in-law. He certainly didn’t have the temperament to endure watching her being bullied by someone else.

As for William, he didn’t like him at all. The Harper family had always believed that men who bully women are incompetent.

Jessie was amused by his reaction, reaching out to touch his cheek.

Kevin immediately jumped back, saying sternly, "Jessie! Did you forget the terms of our agreement? It’s best that you keep your boundaries."

However, she wasn’t offended. She simply propped her head up with one hand and smiled as she observed his reaction.

She could tell that he was someone who always spoke harsh words but had a soft heart. His reddened earlobes fully exposed his current thoughts.

On the other hand, Kevin also felt like his face was burning. For so many years, he had never had any intimate moments with a woman.

"Mr. Harper, you’re really innocent. Have you never been in a relationship before?" Jessie somewhat understood why Grandpa Harper was so eager to push Kevin to get married.

With his slow-witted and serious nature, if you didn’t give him a push, he probably would never get married for the rest of his life.

She had only touched him on his cheek, yet he already reacted like this. What if she had been a bit more forward?

Kevin glared at her but recalled the earlier actions. When she stared at him, he felt something different inside. Before he could explore what that was, she directly touched him and gave him a startle.

"Mr. Harper, why are you so afraid of me? Sit down." Jessie patted the spot next to her, signaling him to sit over.

He was intent on keeping his distance. No matter what she said, he just wouldn’t budge.

"Then I’ll get up," she said, preparing to stand and walk over to him.

She had just stood up when she tripped over a stool, tumbling toward him. fr\(e)ew(e)b.(n)o (v)(e)l.com

He reacted quickly and instantly caught her in his arms, stopping her from falling to the ground.

Jessie instinctively wrapped her arms around his waist, her face resting on his firm chest as she felt his warm body temperature through the fabric.

Kevin steadied her, his hand brushing against her waist. Her softness made him swallow his saliva as he quickly pulled his hand away, taking a step back as if Jessie were a man-eating monster. fr.eew eb novel..com

"Mr. Harper, are you really that scared of me?" Jessie teased deliberately, tilting her head to get a closer look at him.

Her sweet scent was carried by the evening breeze, making him feel like time had nearly stopped. His gaze slowly descended to her rosy lips before it went further down to her curvy figure, making his breathing grow heavier.

Her smiling eyes were like a pair of black holes, drawing him in. He slowly leaned closer.

However, the vibrating phone in his pocket suddenly brought him back to reality. He immediately took a big step back, the hint of desire in his eyes dissipating at once.

"It’s already late. Go to bed early," Kevin said as he returned to his room. But to Jessie, his retreating figure seemed a bit as if he was fleeing.

She chuckled softly and continued sitting on the balcony, intending to enjoy the breeze a bit longer before going back inside.

Kevin quickly walked to the bathroom and saw in the mirror that his face was a faint shade of red. Thinking of how easily she had lured him in just moments ago, he couldn’t help but chuckle.

No one had ever been this bold with him in his life. But given that she was his wife, he could handle it even if it was that sort of situation.

Honestly, he thought of her as a little enchantress.

After that, he took a quick shower to cool down. After making sure his expression was back to normal, he remembered Jessie on the balcony. He hadn’t heard any noise for a while. Could she have fallen asleep there?

Though the weather was hot, the humidity at night could still lead to a cold.

Unable to rest assured, he decided to check on her. As expected, she had fallen asleep leaning against the wall. f r\eew,eb novel.c(o)(m)

Kevin shook his head with a hint of defeat, carefully picking her up and bringing her over to gently lay her down on the bed. Then, he covered her with a blanket before leaving.

The next morning, Jessie found herself lying in bed. Realizing it must have been Kevin who had carried her inside, she felt a bit embarrassed.

She got up to prepare breakfast. The last time at the supermarket, she had also bought a few pots of daffodils. She never had much talent for gardening, but the empty balcony looked better with a touch of green.

When Kevin woke up and saw the breakfast on the table but not Jessie, he instinctively looked around.

Hearing the noise, Jessie poked her head out from the balcony. "You’re awake, Mr. Harper? Come have breakfast. Do you know how to take care of flowers? I’d love to grow some on the balcony. It would look nice, but every plant I grow seems to die."

He walked over for a closer look at the lonely pots of daffodils. He had never been interested in plants. When living at the estate, the servants were the ones who would take care of them, and he paid little attention to it.

"Grandpa is quite fond of gardening, so the house has plenty of plants. I can ask him to teach you. Plus, this balcony isn’t very big. When we move to a bigger place, there will be a little garden for you to do whatever you like."

Hearing this, Jessie sighed and shook her head. "Mr. Harper, you’re being too unrealistic. Have you seen the recent housing prices? They’ve skyrocketed! It’s daunting."

Forget about a villa; it would take her a long time to afford even their current apartment.

Listening to her words, Kevin indeed couldn’t comprehend it. For him, perhaps what he valued least was money, given he had so much to the point he didn’t know how to spend it.

He didn’t say much. Jessie assumed he was feeling pressured, so she patted him on the shoulder. "Mr. Harper, don’t worry; I think living here is great. A simple life is what’s important. Go have breakfast quickly, or you will be late for work."

After finishing breakfast, the couple went their separate ways to work.

As soon as Kevin arrived at the company, Adam came over with files, his face filled with curiosity over some gossip.

"So, did you manage to reconcile with your wife? You’re here at work today, so I’m assuming everything is fine. But if things are okay, why do you look so down?"

"What?"

"Did your wife refuse to do ’exercise’ with you?"
