Chapter 48: Marriage Is a Woman’s Grave

Back in the room, Laura lay on the bed looking at her phone. Luke was already asleep, and she only glanced at William, not wanting to talk to him at all.

William looked at her with some disdain, but his expression softened considerably when his gaze fell on Luke.

Although he didn’t like Laura, he still cared deeply for his son.

"Let me tell you something. My nephew and niece are about to start high school, and my sister wants them to come to the city to study. I agreed with that. From now on, you will be in charge of taking care of her kids. Anyway, it’s just a few extra chopsticks at the table, right? I’ll also increase the living expenses a bit. With this, it should be settled."

After saying this, he ignored Laura’s expression behind him and went straight to the bathroom to shower.

She was already angry, and now she exploded even more. She stood up and shouted, "William Krut! What do you mean by this? You dislike me for not making money at home, and you even kicked my daughter out. Luke is also my child. My child is just as important to me, so I can tolerate everything before this. But your sister’s kids, coming over to live here? I can’t tolerate that.

"You agreeing with her is your own problem. Anyway, I don’t agree. Besides, if her two kids want to study here, your sister doesn’t even have a household registration here, right? Are you planning to transfer her kids’ household registration to us? Or are you going to give your sister the property title instead?"

William was taken aback. He had not considered this possibility, but that was his sister. She wouldn’t cheat him, would she? His face instantly darkened as he coldly said, "Laura, that’s my sister! What is so wrong with helping her? Even if we have to transfer the property title, my own sister wouldn’t scam me, right?

"Plus, it’s just taking care of two kids. You’re at home all day doing nothing anyway. We’re all family, so what’s wrong with lending a hand?"

Hearing this, Laura gave up trying to talk it out with him as she waved her hand dismissively.

"William, it’s your business if you want to do that, not mine. Anyway, I don’t agree with it. If you want to keep insisting, then fine—however, I paid for this house’s down payment, so you will have to pay me back. Otherwise, when the house becomes your sister’s, I won’t have any money left."

William’s face was gloomy as he cursed, "Laura, what do you mean by this? Haven’t you been living in this house? It’s only right that you contribute something! You’ve lived here for so long, and now you want to ask me for the down payment? I’m telling you, it’s impossible!"

She had completely given up on him. Initially, she had agreed to marry him because he seemed honest and treated her and Jessie well.

But after the marriage, things took a major turn. He never considered her feelings and always sided with his family.

All accounts should be clear, even between blood brothers, let alone a house.

"William, I won’t do it no matter what. I won’t take care of your sister’s kids. If you bring them over, we can settle the matter of cooking and someone being a nanny. Nowadays, hiring a nanny in the city would cost at least five thousand dollars a month, and that doesn’t include living expenses. If you can’t accept this much, then forget it!"

If he wanted clear calculations so badly, she was going to settle it thoroughly with him.

"If you dare alter this house, pay back the down payment right away, or we get a divorce!" fre ewe bnove l.com

William’s face was frighteningly dark as he said coldly, "Give you five thousand dollars? Are you crazy? Do you know your age now? Who’s gonna want you, a divorced woman? Haven’t you been looking in the mirror? Look how fat you’ve gotten! Without me, you would starve to death out there! No way you’re getting any money from me! There’s nothing to discuss."

"Get out!" Laura yelled, grabbing a pillow and throwing it at William.

He was hurt, looking at her ferociously as he rolled up his sleeves. He said, "Are you going to fight with me?"

She wasn’t afraid as she glared at him venomously. "I’m telling you, William, if you dare hit me, I’ll never let you off, even in death!"

For the sake of Luke, she, as a mother, had endured everything. However, William’s behavior was growing increasingly excessive.

He had promised initially to support her and let her be a housewife, but now, he despised her for not earning money. They often quarreled, and he even hit her once before. Afraid that Jessie would find out, she secretly covered it up with foundation.

But as the days passed, her heart grew cold.

Laura’s heart turned completely cold toward William, understanding that her repeated compromises only fueled his bullying.

If he dared to lay a hand on her again, she wouldn’t hesitate to retaliate.

He paused, shocked by the murderous intent in her eyes. Eventually, he put down his hand and cursed at her, "Bitch!"

With that, he slammed the door and left.

The loud noise startled Luke awake, and Laura rushed over to comfort him, who was unable to stop his tears from falling.

Jessie returned home, feeling uneasy and absent-minded. She sat on the balcony, her eyes dim and unclear.

Kevin noticed something wrong with her emotions and quietly sat beside her, finally asking softly, "Feeling down?"

She nodded heavily. "I initially moved out just so I could make my mom’s life easier. But after today’s meal, I feel like her future won’t be so easy. With a husband and in-laws like that, how could she ever live comfortably? Now that I’m not by her side, I’m truly worried she will be bullied by them."

Laura used to be strong-willed, but ever since she fell in love, she turned into a little woman who made compromises time after time out of affection. Jessie didn’t want her to become a love-struck fool.

She sighed, turning to Kevin. "Mr. Harper, honestly, after seeing my mom, I’m a bit afraid of marriage. I thought that the in-laws would always side with their son, but after meeting your family, I realize it depends on the people. Although your mom seems a bit dissatisfied with me, she’s not a difficult person. Plus, your grandfather and the rest treat me like family.

"They always said marriage is a woman’s grave. I used to agree, but now I think it’s just all about character. If the character’s good, the marriage will naturally turn out happy."

Even though Kevin had asked her to sign an agreement, he still treated her well and gave her the respect she deserved as a wife.

Compared to William, he was far better.

However, only time would tell how things would truly unfold.

Kevin patted her shoulder and said firmly, "Don’t worry. If our Mom suffers any grievances, we have each other. We will head straight to your stepfather’s place and let the Krut family see that our Mom isn’t easy to bully!"
