Chapter 47: Argument

William had agreed verbally, but he looked down on Kevin’s job from the bottom of his heart. He was just a lousy repairman; what was there to flaunt?

"Mom, don’t be angry. He can’t do anything to me anyway. There’s some fruit in the fridge. I’ll get it."

He said as he headed to the fridge, just in time to see Laura holding Luke and heading back to the bedroom. f|ree(w)ebn\o.vel.com

He immediately called out to her, "The dishes on the table haven’t been cleaned up yet. Where are you going? Clean them up before you leave."

She turned to look at him and said calmly, "Didn’t you say we should settle everything clearly in the future? I paid for most of the gifts you bought last time and Luke’s injury expenses, as well as the ingredients and fruits for today’s dinner. We need to account for all of these.

"If we are to be clear about everything, then let’s be fair about it. I have washed the dishes for my portion of the meal. Your family’s share, you can wash them yourself. If you don’t have the time, then just forget it. It’s none of my business if you’re willing to use dirty dishes."

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was enough for everyone in the living room to hear.

William acted so clear-headed with Laura because his family didn’t want her to take too much advantage of him. Little did they expect that she would be the one to insist on settling everything in a clear manner with him now.

On the other hand, William’s pride was hurt. For her to challenge him in front of so many people was simply intolerable.

He immediately rolled up his sleeves, intending to give her a good talking-to. However, Evelyn rushed over to grab his arm.

"Laura, we are all family here. How can you speak so harshly? William’s just making sure you don’t spend money recklessly, and besides, he already works so hard outside. You should be more considerate as his wife, no? Now, hurry up and clean up the dishes. It’s a woman’s job, after all."

Laura found her words utterly ridiculous and sternly replied, "What do you mean it’s a woman’s job? He works hard outside, but isn’t it also tiring for me to take care of the child at home? Haven’t I been doing all the household chores and cooking? You said we’re family, yet you settle accounts with me so meticulously. Money can be divided, but household chores can’t?"

William angrily scolded, "Laura! How can you talk to Mom like that?"

"What did I say wrong? Am I not stating the facts? Either way, you guys can wash up the dishes if you want. I won’t."

With that, she took Luke back to the bedroom, bringing along the gifts Jessie had bought.

Did those people think they could take advantage of her daughter? Not a chance!

Still seething, William wanted to chase after her, but Evelyn grabbed his arm.

"William, don’t be impulsive. Luke is still young. It’s fine if you want to think about Laura, but think of the child. Besides, did you forget what Jessie said before she left? She was displaying her support for Laura, and her husband doesn’t look like someone you can mess with."

Hearing Evelyn’s words, he was even more infuriated. Thinking of Kevin’s disdainful demeanor made him even angrier.

"He’s just a lousy repairman who has the audacity to show off in front of me. Let him try! Does he think William Krut is easy to bully?"

"Did you forget where Jessie lives? Quiet River Community. Anyone who can buy a house there outright must have at least a decent background. He must have a lot of connections, so you need to keep calm," Evelyn advised, trying to calm him down.

William also recalled Luke’s accident from a while ago. At that time, it was Kevin who had stepped in to help, getting them a discount at the hospital through acquaintances. He realized Evelyn’s words made a lot of sense and soon calmed down.

Mandy chimed in, "William, Mom is right. Luke is still young, so we have to be cautious. But Laura really doesn’t seem to appreciate you. She lives off what you earn."

He snorted. Once Luke was asleep, he would give her a good lesson. Wasn’t it just some housework? If it was that tiring, how come her figure could change so drastically? As she gets older, she should take better care of herself.

In the end, it was Evelyn and Mandy who helped tidy up the dishes. The family sat in the living room, and Mandy showed no intention of leaving.

"William, your brother-in-law and I want to ask you for a favor."

"Sis, don’t say ’ask.’ We’re family. It’s no big deal," William said, feeling that as a family, he should help if he could.

Mandy immediately smiled, feeling reassured. "William, I’m relieved to hear you say that. Your nephew and niece are growing up and will soon start high school. I want them to attend a better school in the city. Your place is close to the school, and there’s a subway nearby. With Jessie moving out, there’s an empty room now. Is it alright if they stay over and have Laura take care of them?"

He hesitated a bit before she quickly added, "Don’t worry, I’ll definitely cover the meal expenses. You won’t lose anything."

"Sis, it’s not about the meal expenses. Of course, I can help take care of my nephew and niece. But I need to discuss it with Laura. After all, she has a say in the house, too. If I don’t tell her, she might make a big fuss. But don’t worry, of course, I’ll always help my own flesh and blood."

Robert nodded in agreement. "William, Laura did bring a child into our family. As a couple, you should discuss things more. Don’t always give her attitude. If you don’t like her staying home doing nothing, let her work too, you get it? You really should learn from your mother and me."

William snorted. "Dad, I know all about that. I work so hard outside, yet she just stays home taking care of a single child. Did you forget the last incident with Luke? She couldn’t even handle such a minor thing. How could I not be upset?"

"I understand, William. Laura was indeed being inconsiderate," Robert acknowledged, shaking his head disapprovingly.

When it came to his precious grandson, everyone else took a back seat.

Later on, Mandy tugged William’s sleeve quietly. "William, please speak to Laura properly. We’re counting on you for your nephew and niece’s schooling."

"Don’t worry, Sis. I’ll have a word with her. We just need to inform her, and she won’t dare to object." fre/ew.ebnovel.c om

She finally smiled with satisfaction, still thinking about the stuff Laura took back to the room.

"Didn’t Jessie and her husband bring over a lot of things? Laura took them all back. She didn’t even leave anything for Dad and your brother-in-law. I saw that they brought some good stuff, even a bird’s nest. Young Joey hasn’t been doing well recently; he’s always sick. Bring it over so I can use it for him, Mom and Dad."

He nodded with a chuckle. "Sis, we’re all family here. Take whatever you want."
