Chapter 46: Argument
Jessie stepped back to shield Luke, and Mandy instantly frowned with displeasure. Just as she was about to speak, she noticed Kevin approaching. His whole demeanor was imposing, leaving her startled.
She quickly changed her expression, putting on a smile as she said, "Oh, Jessie, is this your husband? He’s quite handsome. Which company is he an executive at?"
Just by seeing his posture and demeanor, she could tell he was way better than William.
She initially thought Jessie had married a nobody, but she was surprised that she had managed to get into such a good family. A tinge of jealousy stung at her heart at this thought.
Jessie, however, didn’t show her a pleasant face. Mandy initially tried to bully Luke, but she immediately switched her behavior after seeing Kevin.
Not only Jessie, but even Kevin pretended as if he had not heard anything. He clearly saw how Mandy tried to snatch Luke’s toy for her child, using her status as a guest to morally pressure Jessie, something he disliked intensely.
The toy belonged to Luke, and he naturally had the right to decide whether to give it to another kid or not.
If Mandy had the gall to snatch it away earlier, he wouldn’t have hesitated to step forward and protect them. He always sided with his family, especially since Luke wasn’t in the wrong here.
Laura also peeked in and saw everything, feeling quite satisfied with Kevin’s actions.
On the other hand, Mandy’s younger son rolled around further on the ground when he saw that he couldn’t get his hands on the toy. He shouted, "I don’t care! I want it! I want the toy in his hand!"
William’s family never saw Jessie in a favorable light. Now, she had gotten married and was living in the prestigious Quiet River Community. Despite Kevin only being a mere repairman, considering they could directly buy a place in that residency, they were all speculating that Kevin’s family must be quite wealthy.
What did it matter if his job wasn’t that great? As long as his family had money, wasn’t that more than enough?
That was why those who had previously treated Jessie coldly were now all smiles.
Seeing the adults not helping him out, the child seized the moment when they were distracted. He dashed forward and started yanking the toy from Luke, yelling out, "Give it to me! Give it to me!"
Mandy let out an "Oh dear" and hurried to separate the two. "You two, stop fighting," she said. Despite her speaking as if she were referring to both of them, Jessie clearly saw her only pulling on Luke.
The next moment, Kevin stepped forward and scooped Luke up. His gaze darkened as he stared at Mandy, his cold expression instantly turning the atmosphere in the living room colder.
Robert Krut cleared his throat, glaring at Mandy meaningfully. Although it was just a fight between children, he could clearly tell she was being biased, especially in front of Kevin. It was rather embarrassing.
Seeing the atmosphere cool down, Mandy awkwardly laughed a few times before returning the toy to Luke, softly coaxing, "Baby, be good. Mommy will take you to buy a toy later, okay?"
The toy’s head ended up a bit crooked after the struggle, making Luke immediately feel aggrieved. Kevin rubbed his head to console the child.
"Luke, why don’t you give him the toy? Your sister and I bought you lots of new toys, and we don’t need this broken one anymore."
Luke blinked a couple of times and obediently handed the toy to Jessie.
On the other hand, Jessie didn’t want the situation to become too ugly. Even though she disliked this family, it wasn’t she who had to face them in the end; it was Laura.
She handed the toy with the crooked head to the child, who then grinned happily upon receiving it.
The atmosphere had relaxed considerably, and everyone’s expressions softened a bit. Although Kevin had not spoken much, it wasn’t difficult for them to notice that he wasn’t someone to be messed with from his earlier actions.
Evelyn also knew Jessie was no pushover. She now had Kevin’s support, and Laura had indeed given them a lot of benefits after marrying William. She was more than aware of what William was like.
Laura might be older, but she still added an heir to the Krut family, so she deserved some respect. Otherwise, making a fuss would result in Jessie stepping in to defend her.
Jessie helped bring out the dishes, with William returning and exchanging a few words with everyone before sitting down to eat.
Luke went to play with his new toys, and Mandy’s child started demanding it again. William immediately declared, “Luke, give the toy to your brother.”
Laura’s hand holding the chopsticks paused. Kevin had bought the toys for Luke, so why was William trying to dictate them?
Kevin also stated calmly, "I bought that for Luke."
He was only sitting there, yet he exuded an unspoken aura of pressure. It hit a nerve with William, who couldn’t understand why Kevin, who was clearly just a useless repairman, had such an intimidating air to him, just like a boss demanding proposals from him.
Despite that, his confidence inexplicably grew a bit as he reminded himself of Kevin’s profession.
"It’s just a toy; you can always buy more." William waved his hand, putting on an air of seniority.
Unbeknownst to him, he had done exactly what Kevin detested most. Kevin’s face grew even grimmer as he replied coldly, "Then why don’t you buy it for him yourself? Why insist on Luke giving it up?"
This comment made William’s face fall on the spot before he snorted coldly, "No wonder you’re just a repairman..."
Evelyn quickly glared at William and stepped in to mediate the situation.
"Look at what you’re saying, William! Kevin, that’s not what he meant."
"Then what did he mean?" Jessie retorted.
Insulting Kevin in her presence was akin to insulting her.
Laura also stiffened up. "William, whether you acknowledge it or not, I was the one who brought an heir into your family. This is my daughter and son-in-law; even if you look down on them, you shouldn’t say that to their faces!"
He could say what he wanted about her, but Jessie and Kevin were off-limits to his insults.
Mandy’s husband, recognizing it was due to their child’s actions, quickly took the child back.
"Kids don’t know any better; let’s just eat, shall we?"
Evelyn also chimed in, trying to smooth things over. Although the issue was resolved, the meal proceeded in an awkward silence.
On the other hand, Jessie didn’t want to linger any longer and make things more difficult for Laura. Before leaving, she purposefully said loudly, "Mom, I’ll be going home now. If anything comes up, just call me and Kevin, and I will come over at once."
It was her own subtle way of offering support to Laura. After sending Jessie and Kevin off, Laura went to tidy up the dishes with Luke.
Evelyn softly reprimanded, "William, how are you going to keep being a leader if you can’t even say things diplomatically? Do you need me to teach you everything?"
