Chapter 45: A Whole Family

"The last time your brother called you, wasn’t it just for you to lend a hand and give some money? We’re all family, after all. Didn’t college teach you anything about gratitude? Our family raised you all these years without asking you for anything. Now that you and your mom are making money in the city, we, your grandparents, have stayed in the countryside our whole lives and just want to see the world outside. Respecting and accommodating your elders is a responsibility of yours, you know.

"By the way, have you moved? I didn’t see anyone at the old place. If you’ve moved out, how come you didn’t tell us a word? We ran around for no reason. Send us the new address quickly, so we can come and stay over. Once we have a place of our own, we will move out. Meanwhile, go to the supermarket and buy some meat and alcohol. Your cousin and I haven’t eaten yet, understand?"

Jessie felt her blood pressure rising and gritted her teeth as she asked, "Looks like the dutiful children Grandpa and Grandma raised aren’t doing very well now, seeing how they don’t even have their own place in the city."

Upon hearing this, the voice on the other end instantly exploded. He shouted angrily, "Jessie! Have you gotten too big for your boots, cursing your family like this? Let me tell you, all your siblings are doing exceptionally well! Your third brother has already bought a house in the city, and his wife is pregnant, your second brother..."

Jessie sneered, finding it hilariously pathetic.

She should probably thank Grandpa Moore’s loose lips; he could never hide anything, always boasting about his children and grandchildren. If it weren’t for this, she wouldn’t have known her third cousin had bought a house in the city. Since everyone was so capable, how did they have the audacity to ask her for money?

Do they think she was that easy to push around?

Before Grandpa Moore could finish his bragging, she interrupted him, "If they’re all doing so well, why not have them buy you a house as well? Despite that, here you are pestering us instead. Truthfully, you’ve really got some nerve. If you dare to bother me again, I’ll call the police!"

With that, she hung up the phone. On the other end, Grandpa Moore was so enraged by her words that he was left speechless before he cursed, "This ungrateful child! She has no manners at all! How dare she hang up on her elders!"

Frankie chimed in, "Exactly! She even threatened to call the police on us!"

This successfully stoked Grandpa Moore’s anger even further. He snorted coldly, "Call the police on us? Taking care of her grandparents is her lifelong duty! Now, you’d better find a way to locate them and make sure they pay for the house! We came all the way here, so there will be extra expenses out of them for food and stay. Moreover, your third brother’s wife is pregnant; we can’t disturb her. Make sure they cough up the money!"

Frankie nodded, a sharp glint in his eyes. "Don’t worry, I’ll definitely find a way to force them out. By then, they won’t dare refuse our demand."

He decided to teach them a lesson.

Jessie angrily hung up the phone, but she knew at heart that these people wouldn’t give up so easily, especially now that they were in the city. Despite that, Grace City was expansive; finding her and Laura would be like searching for a needle in a haystack for them.

"Don’t be too upset," Kevin comforted her.

He had more or less overheard their conversation.

Previously, he had already asked Adam to look into Jessie’s family situation, so the results should be in soon.

Laura also consoled from the side, "Exactly; don’t worry, Jessie. Even if they want to find us, they still have to search hard."

Hearing this, Jessie nodded. It wasn’t worth it to waste her mood on unworthy people. She reached out, "Mom, let me hold Luke. Where’s Uncle William? Is he home?" fr\(e)ew(e)b.(n)o (v)(e)l.com

Laura shook her head. "He should be off work by now, probably on his way back. Let’s head up quickly, I’ve got soup simmering in the kitchen."

Luke smiled at Jessie, his dark eyes focused on Kevin behind her.

Just as they reached the apartment, William’s call came through.

"Laura! My parents and my sister’s family are coming over later as well; prepare some more dishes."

Laura was instantly irritated upon hearing this. She replied, "William, I told you earlier today that we’re having Jessie and her husband over. Despite that, you’re suddenly bringing your whole family over when I don’t even have enough food prepared! And cooking also takes time, you know? It’s not like you can just snap your fingers and have it ready!"

Hearing her barrage of complaints, William was also displeased. "Why didn’t you prepare more if you were going to host? Besides, isn’t it a dinner invitation? Why can’t my parents come? Just take some more time to cook. Anyway, the living expenses are all my earnings!"

Unable to reason with him, Laura simply hung up. Jessie overheard some of it and frowned, volunteering to help.

"Mom, let me help you."

"No need, you and Kevin just sit." Laura waved her off and went back to the kitchen.

Soon enough, William came in with the whole family, making a commotion.

They, too, were aware that Jessie was now married and came with ulterior motives. Especially William’s sister, Mandy, who had her eyes on the apartment. She thought that Laura, whose only role was to stay home with the kids, should just let her high-school-aged children move in. Since the place was close to their school and commuting would be easier for the kids, Laura could handle their meals.

She initially wanted to do this, but unfortunately, there wasn’t enough room. Moreover, Jessie was still living there at the time. Now that Jessie has gotten married and moved out, the room has just become available.

She had mentioned it to William several times, pointing out that Jessie wasn’t even a daughter who had blood ties to him, yet he was still spending his money on her. She found it frustrating, always thinking that Laura was just taking advantage of him.

William himself was dissatisfied with Laura. Coupled with Mandy’s instigation, he was even more annoyed as he often argued with Laura over Jessie’s matters. Eventually, Jessie married and moved out.

At that moment, a sudden cry broke the air; Luke was crying, tugging a toy model with another child.

Jessie recognized it instantly as something she had given Luke earlier.

"It’s mine, mine!" he cried louder, and she hurried over. Seeing her, he gave a tug and quickly hid behind her.

When the other child failed to get his hands on the toy, he began rolling and kicking on the ground. fre.eweb novel\.c om

"I don’t care! I want the toy in Luke’s hands!"

The sharp cries hurt Jessie’s ears, making her frown.

She was just about to educate the kids about getting along and not fighting, but Mandy suddenly walked over directly and said, "Jessie, how are you teaching your brother? Why is he so petty?"

"Isn’t it perfectly normal for kids to play rough? Besides, we are guests; Luke should let our little one have it," she said as she reached out to take the toy from behind Jessie.
