Chapter 42: Complaining

Lilian seemed to understand something, looking at Jessie helplessly as she said, "Don’t tell me you brought up the divorce again when Mr. Harper apologized to you just now."

Jessie didn’t care and replied, "Of course; I need to be clear on such things."

After saying that, she fell silent as she came to realize her words might have been too harsh earlier.

Lilian sighed, shaking her head. "I bet Mr. Harper left angrily. Even though you both agreed to divorce in half a year, can’t you just try? What if you manage to develop feelings? Besides, if he truly didn’t care, there would have been no reason for him to come over, apologize, and give you gifts."

"His willingness to lower his guard shows you mean something to him."

Lilian had great faith in Jessie’s charm. They only had half a year, but she believed Kevin would fall for her in no time at all.

Listening to her friend’s advice, Jessie lowered her head, examining the blue gem.

"After all, I’m just holding the title of his wife for now. Nobody knows what will happen later. Plus, I don’t want to owe him too much. But he is indeed better than my stepdad; he helps me out with tasks and covers most of the big expenses without calculating too much with me.

"But this necklace... I really don’t dare to wear it. It looks extraordinarily expensive. I’m afraid of getting robbed while wearing it; it almost feels like wearing it might weigh my whole body down."

Lilian nodded, respecting Jessie’s decision. "It’s good that you don’t like owing people. And didn’t Mr. Harper initially misunderstand you as a scheming woman? You returning the necklace to him is a great way to prove him wrong."

Since Kevin doubted her friend, showing it through actions was the best response.

Jessie nodded before asking curiously, “You’ve been coming over a lot recently. Didn’t Steve give you any work?”

Lilian shrugged indifferently. “Oh, I wish. This afternoon, when I hadn’t finished my clients’ tasks, he let me off work and asked me to keep you company since he thought you were still scared due to the thugs yesterday.”

At this point, Lilian’s brows furrowed as she felt like something was off.

On the other hand, Jessie didn’t think much of it. “He’s really kind-hearted.”

Having said that, she handed the chilled little cake to Lilian. “Give it a try.”

Lilian’s thoughts got interrupted. Whether Steve was interested in Jessie slipped out of her mind.

On the other side, Kevin felt quite uneasy, returning to the car with a dark face.

Neither the bodyguard nor Drake dared to breathe loudly. Eventually, Drake nervously asked, “Young Master... where to now?”

Kevin’s cold eyes swept over, “Back to the Quiet River!” f|re(e)web.n\ovel. (c)o.m

Even though he was still angry, he hadn’t forgotten Jessie’s words about her broken bike that needed fixing.

All the bodyguards watched Kevin struggling with a bicycle, exchanging bewildered looks as if they had never seen something like this before.

“Crack!”

With a loud sound, the bike’s handlebars successfully separated from the body.

Kevin’s face turned even darker, pondering how to tell Jessie about this incident.

In the evening, just as Jessie was about to close up her store, she saw Kevin waiting for her in his car outside the shop.

She thought she would have to take a cab home after saying those words earlier, but Kevin still unexpectedly showed up.

Lilian gave a cheeky look, leaving with a few sneaking glances back after saying goodbye to Jessie.

One could say these two had the perfect looks for starring in a TV drama.

Meanwhile, a man ran up while holding a box with a cake inside. He showed it to Jessie, “Ma’am, this cake’s spoiled; can you exchange it for me?”

Kevin couldn’t hear their conversation, instinctively thinking someone was troubling her. He hurriedly got out of the car, walking quickly to Jessie’s side while staring at the man coldly.

The man was evidently startled, stuffing the box into Jessie’s hand with a trembling wave, “Never mind, I... I don’t want it anymore...”

He then turned and ran, while Jessie hurriedly shouted at his back, “You can come back tomorrow afternoon for an exchange! For free!”

However, he had already vanished; it was uncertain if he even heard her.

She glanced back at Kevin, understanding why the man had run. His cold look, coupled with his towering stature and muscular build, made him look like a movie-style gang boss. No wonder she had lost a customer.

“Mr. Harper, next time, just wait for me in the car. If I need anything, I’ll call you,” she shook her head as she said.

Kevin frowned, clearly feeling like she was complaining about him. He coldly hummed, “Even if you don’t like it, we already have a marriage certificate.”

Noticing his response, Jessie found it amusing and pulled his wrist, heading toward the car.

“I’m not complaining about you; it’s just your cold look that scared him off. It’s almost like seeing a mob boss from a movie whenever people look at you. Come on, let’s head home.”

Hearing her explanation, he felt a little better. His upbringing destined him as the heir of the Harpers, and he had grown colder and more serious after being in a high position for a long time.

It wasn’t only for strangers—even employees at Harper Group would run away at the sight of him.

He had to thank Jessie for not fleeing at their marriage back then, genuinely feeling grateful to her.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Jessie remembered something and turned her head to ask.

“By the way, did you manage to repair my bike? If not, I’ll find a repairman next time.”

Mentioning this, Kevin’s body stiffened as he hesitated a bit before replying, “I... I did, but... It’s broken...”

“Broken?” Her voice rose a few decibels, staring at him in disbelief.

He turned slightly, not quite daring to meet her eyes. “That bike wasn’t sturdy. I only used a bit of force, but it broke. I’ll get you a car instead; it’ll be more convenient for coming to the shop, especially in the rain.”

He waited for her response for a while, only to meet her indignant gaze that made his heart tighten.

“I’m sorry...”

This incident was indeed his fault.

Jessie stared at him for a long time before sighing helplessly, leaning back into her seat. “It’s fine; what’s broken is broken.”

It wasn’t like she couldn’t afford a bike, but she just believed in saving money where she could.

“Don’t worry. I caused it, so I’ll buy you a replacement vehicle,” Kevin assured, his expression serious.

“Nah.” She extended a fist to him, gesturing for him to catch it.

He misunderstood her gesture, wrapping his hand around her fist, unable to help but marvel.

Was her hand always this small?
