Chapter 43: I’ll Take You Back
Jessie was amused by his reaction and couldn’t help but tease, "Mr. Harper, you can just tell me if you want to hold my hand. There’s no need to do it this way."
Only then did Kevin misunderstand her intention and quickly let go, responding in a low voice, "I was just..."
She noticed the tips of his ears turning red and couldn’t help but smile as she placed the red velvet box in his hand. "Actually, what I said today was a bit out of line. I apologize."
He was a bit surprised by her attitude, thinking she was, in fact, a reasonable person.
"But I don’t need this necklace, so return it first tomorrow. This necklace doesn’t serve any purpose for me. You might as well buy some meat instead—it would be more practical.”
With that, she buckled her seatbelt and said, "Let’s hurry home. It’s late, and we have to go to my mom’s for dinner tomorrow. I’m a bit hungry, and there’s not much left in the fridge, so let’s stop by the supermarket on the way."
He looked at the box in his hand in slight confusion. "Do you have any idea how much this necklace is worth?"
Jessie shook her head indifferently. "No matter how much it costs, it’s your money. Besides, have you ever seen me buy jewelry? Mr. Harper, although you can spend your money as you want, I think it’s worth mentioning that we should spend wisely and put our money where it counts!"
She didn’t want to say much more, lest he think she was eyeing his money again.
Hearing this, Kevin didn’t say anything more and quietly put the box away. He glanced at her expression from the corner of his eye and noticed that she genuinely didn’t care.
If she was as he suspected—a schemer—she would have readily accepted the necklace, but she didn’t.
This realization darkened his mood somewhat. Had he truly misjudged a good person with his own petty assumptions?
He drove her back and almost passed the supermarket until Jessie quickly called him to stop.
As she unbuckled her seatbelt, she asked skeptically, "Mr. Harper, have you ever been here before? You don’t even know where the supermarket is."
Kevin’s heart skipped a beat before he gave her a nod. "I bought this place a while back. After renovating it, I left it as is since Grandpa said he liked having everyone around it, as it gave him peace of mind. Now that I’m married, I can’t live with them anymore."
Jessie didn’t know much about his family situation. She thought it was inappropriate to ask too much. Originally, she felt like he was wary of her, so she had stopped asking altogether.
He didn’t lie to her; he indeed used to live with his family in the Harper family estate.
"Maybe in a while, I’ll take you to see them."
After all, she was now a part of the family, and she couldn’t be kept from visiting forever.
But if he didn’t want Jessie to know everything at that time, he could always show her a less impressive house as a cover.
"Alright," Jessie agreed.
The two went to the supermarket and bought some groceries. She had originally planned to buy gifts for her visit to Laura’s house tomorrow, but since they were already there, Kevin suggested just buying some groceries as well.
She thought it made sense; it would save her a trip later.
She initially planned to buy some casual gifts because Laura didn’t like such formalities, given it was just a relaxing meal. However, Kevin took it more seriously, with bags in hand.
In the end, he insisted on paying.
"You really didn’t have to buy so much," she said with a slight smile as she watched him with bags full of gifts.
Kevin placed everything in the back of the truck with a casual tone. "It’s my first visit; it’s better to buy more."
Buying too little might make others call him stingy—he didn’t think William was an easy person to get along with. Although he didn’t care about how people criticized him, he didn’t want other people speculating about Jessie behind her back.
Hearing this, she had no choice but to nod. "But perhaps we should split the cost."
At this suggestion, his face darkened. He couldn’t understand why she kept drawing a line between them and treating him like an outsider. This made him feel uncomfortable.
Jessie saw his grim expression and quickly explained, "I just don’t want you to spend too much. After all, being a repairman isn’t an easy job. We should share some burdens as husband and wife."
His lips lifted slightly in a smile, though he quickly hid it as he didn’t want Jessie to notice.
Once home, after they had eaten, she bid him goodnight and headed to bed.
Kevin stayed on the sofa, looking at the small red box in his hand before eventually putting it away.
The next morning, she found an extra car key on the table; it was definitely not Kevin’s pickup key.
She was a bit curious, but she only glanced at it a couple more times before heading to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
When he opened the door and saw her seemingly uninterested in the key on the table, he couldn’t help but ask, "Didn’t you notice the key on the table?"
Busy with preparing breakfast, Jessie replied casually, "I did, but it’s not mine."
Kevin paused, realizing he should’ve left a note or something yesterday.
He sat down and turned to look at her in the kitchen. "I picked this car out for you. It’s partly my responsibility that your bike broke, so the car is for you."
When she heard that he had bought her a car, she was a bit stunned. Just yesterday, she had lectured him on spending money wisely. It was just like she had been talking to a brick wall.
She brought breakfast over, picking up the new car key before seeing a little pink charm attached to it.
"When did you buy it?"
She remembered they got home late after buying groceries.
He remained calm and replied, "I asked a friend to help me pick it out before. It was delivered last night while you were asleep."
Jessie nodded somewhat thoughtfully.
"Eat up. After that, we’ll go downstairs and check out your car to see if you can get used to driving it."
"Okay," she agreed.
She had always wanted to buy a car. Although she had money, she thought she could save up more since her bike wasn’t entirely broken.
However, Kevin had just made her plan move forward.
Downstairs, in the Quiet River Community’s parking space, a white sedan was parked—a sleek, compact car just right for a woman to drive.
He had put in the effort to choose such a fitting car for her.
"Give it a try," he said, handing the car keys to her.
