Chapter 41: Calculating

Kevin didn’t speak, staring coldly at Jessie. Jessie thought he didn’t want to, so she was about to retract her request when she saw him place a red velvet box on the table. After telling her the box was for her, he turned and left.

She watched his angry back as he left, muttering to herself, "If you don’t want to, then don’t do it. Why leave angrily? And why throw this garbage before going?"

She pouted and picked up the box. Opening it, she saw a beautifully-crafted necklace inside, set with a blue gemstone that looked very expensive.

Her first reaction upon seeing the necklace was to wonder if she had knocked some sense out of Kevin’s head last night. Were they some kind of wealthy family to be buying such extravagant jewelry?

As a woman, Jessie admitted that she had some interest in jewelry, but money should be spent wisely. Considering Kevin’s spending habits, she couldn’t help but feel a little pained.

Laura, upon receiving Jessie’s message and knowing Kevin would be available tomorrow, excitedly took Luke to the market to buy groceries.

Before she could leave, William called her from the sofa as he glared at her with displeasure.

"What are you doing out? What are you buying now? Every day you just spend money without thinking about saving me some!"

The last time they met the family, Laura had bought a lot of fruits and supplements. That had already angered William quite a bit, insisting that she should pay for it herself.

Earning money was hard for him, yet all she did was comfortably stay at home and not understand his struggles at all.

"I’ve invited Jessie and our son-in-law for dinner tomorrow. I need to buy some ingredients," Laura replied, holding back her temper and not wanting to argue in front of Luke.

Back when Jessie was still living at home, William meticulously calculated every expense as if worried she would take advantage of him. Now that Jessie had moved out, his stinginess continued, leaving Laura disappointed. fr.e ewe.bno.vel .com

"You can buy groceries, but we’re going to have problems if you spend my money. You said you’d be hosting the dinner, so you cover the cost.

"William Krut, do you really need to be so clear-cut with me? Let’s not forget, it was you who asked me to close my shop and come home to care for our child. If you want to be like this, fine, I’ll get a job, and you can find someone to look after the child. fre ewe bnove l.com

"Why should I? You gave birth to the child, so you should take care of it. You have no idea how stressed I am. Can’t you cut me some slack? Besides, it’s not like you don’t have money; you can always ask Jessie."

He argued with logic on his side. He was always working hard outside, while Laura stayed home. Everything they had was his contribution; she should share some of the burden.

Although when he was struggling back then, it was Laura who sold her shop to help him reach his current position.

But now, wasn’t he supporting everything?

Despite this, she should at least take care of her appearance. He couldn’t bring himself to take her out like he used to, since she was far from the beauty she once was.

Thinking about Nancy at the office, he regretted marrying Laura even more.

Listening to William’s words, Laura was fuming as she rolled her eyes at him and didn’t say anything further. She left the house carrying Luke.

William used to often bring his relatives over, asking her suddenly to buy groceries and demanding the best and most expensive ones.

Why couldn’t she do the same for Jessie?

Admittedly, while she no longer has a source of income and generally relies on William, the house’s down payment and renovation were all paid for with her savings.

With that in mind, Laura snorted coldly before heading to the market.

If William continued to act like this, then she wouldn’t do all the house chores by herself, either. Why would she wash and cook for such a guy? If they were going to count on each other, then it should be done thoroughly.

Every time William came home from work, he would just lounge on the sofa and not do anything, leaving her to serve him.

She still remembered how he had promised to take good care of her and Jessie, ensuring they would never suffer. Now, everything had changed.

Especially considering she was already at an older age, having a child then was highly risky and could potentially threaten her life. Despite that, William never considered her feelings.

So why should she care about his feelings, then? Once Luke gets a bit older, she will open her own shop again. A woman must be financially independent.

On the other hand, when Jessie was putting the last piece of cake into the fridge, Lilian showed up. She immediately noticed the tulips on the table.

"Jessie, when did you get flowers? They’re lovely, and this type must be pricey." Lilian approached to admire them closely.

Jessie didn’t know much about flower types. Hearing Lilian’s remark, she explained, "Are they expensive? I’m not sure. My husband sent them to apologize."

Upon hearing this, Lilian’s eyes lit up with gossip as she hurriedly moved closer to Jessie. She curiously asked, "Really? What did he say? Did you kiss him?"

Jessie gave her a helpless look. "What nonsense are you talking about? I already told you, he was just apologizing for yesterday. Besides, why would I kiss him? We don’t have that kind of relationship."

Kevin was very clear in the agreement, emphasizing that she should not have any inappropriate thoughts toward him.

How could she dare? .com

Lilian pouted. "Alright, admitting mistakes is good; it’s better than men who won’t admit they’re wrong. At least he’s sincerely apologizing. You shouldn’t always speak with hidden stings, Jessie. You know it makes people uncomfortable sometimes."

"Do I?" Jessie was oblivious, thinking everything she said was factual.

Thinking about how Kevin left so angrily today, she started to doubt herself. Could it really be her manner of speaking?

Lilian nodded emphatically. "Oh, definitely. Is this also from him?"

She picked up the small red box on the table, opening it to be instantly dazzled by the necklace inside.

Jessie glanced casually and nodded.. "Yes, he said it’s an apology gift and asked me to keep it. I’m planning to give it back tonight—just throwing a little tantrum. Accepting such an expensive gift from someone makes me uncomfortable, especially when we’re set to divorce in six months. If there are complications with the necklace, then it wouldn’t be good."

For her, she only took what she was supposed to and returned what she wasn’t entitled to.
