Chapter 40: His Apology
Chapter 40: His Apology
Seeing the situation, Kevin thought of the fact that the one inviting was Laura. It would be impolite to refuse, and he could just take Jessie out to dinner at a restaurant another time.
Thus, he agreed. He originally wanted to ask what she liked, but after editing the message for a long time, he decided to delete it. Otherwise, it would seem too deliberate.
Lilian, sipping coffee, secretly glanced at the chat records between Jessie and Kevin. After seeing his actions, she speculated.
"Jessie, I’m telling you, he’s definitely trying to find an opportunity to apologize to you. He’s just a bit embarrassed and can’t put down his pride."
She propped her head with one hand, looking like a matchmaker and raising her eyebrows at Jessie.
Jessie looked doubtful, shaking her head in response. "How is that possible? Our relationship isn’t like what you think."
Lilian was a bit shocked. "Not like I think? Didn’t he drive you to the store today? I feel like he actually cares about you. You shouldn’t overthink this, especially since you’ve just gotten married. It’s better to slowly nurture the relationship."
Initially, Jessie had planned to live well with Kevin. But since the day he had her sign that agreement, she understood her place.
She didn’t want to hide it from Lilian and directly said, "Lilian, you know more about me and him than my mom does. I married him just to move out and not worry my mom.
"But do you remember that weekend we met each other’s families? That night, he took out an agreement for me to sign. Every clause in it was guarding against me, like he had assumed I was scheming for his money from the start. The agreement even stated that if we didn’t develop feelings within half a year, we would get a divorce. He would leave the house and the car to me, and I shouldn’t covet anything else.
"In that aspect, he’s quite generous, willing to leave the house and the car to me. As a matter of fact, the house doesn’t have a mortgage, either. Earning a house in half a year sounds like a real deal. However, I never intended to take anything from him; I just wanted a place to stay. If we really got divorced, I wouldn’t take anything, and I’d just find a place to rent.
"And do you know why he sent me over today? Steve saved me yesterday, and he saw it. He misunderstood that I was looking for someone else, and he threw a tantrum at home, locking the door and not letting me in. Tell me, is this person childish or not?"
Hearing this, Jessie sighed helplessly. Meanwhile, Lilian gained a new understanding of Kevin and remarked, "Jessie, let’s try to look at things positively. See what his attitude is like. Besides, there’s still half a year to go; maybe you two will spark some love.
"I think Mr. Harper, though he looks cold and doesn’t talk much, gives me a pretty good impression. I do feel he kind of likes you. Otherwise, why would he be upset after seeing you with my boss?"
Jessie remained silent—Kevin liked her? She couldn’t tell at all.
After all, he constantly warned her not to fall in love with him, as he would never fall in love with her.
It didn’t matter; the marriage would only last for half a year. After that, she would just find another place to live.
At that moment, Lilian’s phone rang. After exchanging a few words, she waved goodbye to Jessie.
"Jessie, I’ll catch up with you later. I need to go now."
"Be careful on your way."
After bidding farewell to Lilian, Jessie immediately returned to the kitchen to continue making desserts. Recently, her research on ice cream cakes was quite successful, as order volumes were surging.
As evening approached, Jessie heard the doorbell jingle. Assuming it was Lilian, she didn’t bother looking up.
"Lilian, have a seat. Do you want something to eat?"
She waited patiently, but she never received a response. Thus, she curiously looked up and locked eyes with Kevin’s deep gaze.
"Mr. Harper, why are you here?"
She noticed the bouquet half-hidden behind him and recalled Lilian’s words, understanding his purpose for coming over.
Kevin wasn’t familiar with apologizing to people, so he handed the bouquet to Jessie. It was a bunch of tulips, adorned with pink petals and green leaves. They were fresh and beautiful, matching the store’s style.
"This is for you. I misunderstood you last time, and that was my mistake."
Jessie raised an eyebrow, unapologetically taking the flowers as she quipped, "I didn’t expect that Mr. Harper, who has poor apology skills, would have a good eye for flowers."
Detecting the subtle sarcasm, Kevin didn’t say much as he focused on her reaction.
Didn’t they say that girls would be thrilled and happy to receive flowers?
Why did he feel like Jessie’s reaction was so bland?
Jessie took a vase from the kitchen, carefully arranging the flowers. Seeing her cherish them eased his expression a bit.
"Thank you, Mr. Harper. How much were these flowers? I’ll pay you cash."
The flowers were beautiful yet fleeting. She valued practicality more than short-lived beauty.
"No need." His face darkened again. "These are for my apology; why would you pay?"
She shrugged; she didn’t care much about the incident yesterday, and she didn’t expect Kevin to suddenly give her flowers for an apology.
"I just didn’t want you to get taken advantage of. Besides, we already cleared up the misunderstanding from yesterday. Plus, after we get divorced in half a year, Mr. Harper will leave the car and house to me, right? How can I still be angry about that?"
Hearing this, Kevin’s face darkened further, but he had nothing to say.
The agreement was his idea after all.
However, hearing her talk about divorce put him in a bad mood.
"Mr. Harper, did you get off work early today?" Jessie looked at the outside sky, which wasn’t too dark.
"Yeah. I was bored, so I came over," Kevin said in a deep voice.
"That’s great, my bicycle broke down. If you’re free, could you help me fix it? It would be a burden if I had to bother you to drive me every time."
She couldn’t fix bikes, and hiring someone was costly. With a handy husband like him, why not make the most of it?
Kevin was dissatisfied with her reaction. According to Drake’s advice, women should hug you and reconcile at this point. Although their previous relationship wasn’t smooth, he wasn’t willing to accept just this.
