Chapter 39: Gift to Apologize
As far as he knew, the reason Kevin married that girl was because Grandpa Harper had taken a liking to her at first sight. Although it seemed a bit too hasty, he believed that the old man’s judgment was not wrong.
Kevin would probably fall for her soon.
"I don’t have a habit of reopening old wounds."
Bringing up Jessie’s past repeatedly might just make her feel worse.
Adam understood that Kevin was worried about making her upset, so he ended up troubling himself instead.
"Who would’ve thought that our cold-hearted President Harper actually has such a warm side, already showing so much concern for another person?"
Listening to Adam’s teasing, Kevin maintained his composure and responded seriously.
"Even though we are just a couple by name, as my wife, she can’t be bullied by other people no matter what."
"Tch. You’re all talk, Kevin. I really look forward to seeing you chase after her soon."
At these words, Kevin’s face twitched with discomfort as he angrily shouted out Adam’s name, making him stop his teasing.
Jessie was his wife—if she got bullied by other people, he would definitely lose face.
Adam shook his head helplessly. "Fine, I won’t say more. But you know I’m a very busy person. It’s just some research that you could have anyone do. Why trouble me? It’s not like I’m made for this."
Jessie was just an ordinary person, not some business mogul. Any of Kevin’s bodyguards could find this information.
"If you do it, I’ll be more at ease."
Hearing this, Adam muttered softly, "You say you’re not concerned, but clearly, you’re too concerned."
"What did you say?"
"Nothing," Adam quickly replied. "Besides your wife’s information, is there anyone else I need to check?"
"Investigate her family members, and send their information to my email. I’d like to know what those parasitic relatives have done before." Kevin’s eyes turned cold.
From what he heard about their behavior from Jessie, he knew that simply ignoring them wouldn’t work. They would find ways to bother her and Laura, not letting them go easily.
But no matter what they planned, he would never let them bully Jessie as long as he was around.
Adam couldn’t help but remark, "Good thing you kept your marriage a secret. If your wife’s family situation goes public, it would definitely cause a mess. Don’t worry; this is simple enough. I’ll gather the information quickly."
"Okay, thank you," Kevin said before hanging up the phone.
The reason he chose to hide his identity from Jessie wasn’t because of her relatives, but because he wanted to first assess her character.
Initially, he labeled her as a schemer. But after several misunderstandings, he realized his view of her might be wrong.
Nevertheless, he planned to observe for a while longer. If Jessie proved to be genuinely good, he would admit everything to her and apologize to her before nullifying the contract, making them a real couple.
Meanwhile, Drake was pondering whether he should disguise himself when picking Kevin up.
Perhaps going under the knife and charging the company wasn’t too bad.
As he was considering this, he didn’t notice Kevin’s gaze on him.
It wasn’t until Drake felt a chill that he noticed Kevin’s gaze in the rearview mirror.
"M-Mr. Harper, what’s wrong?" Drake forced a smile, feeling a sense of dread.
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
He was taken aback, not expecting Kevin to ask such a personal question since his boss usually didn’t care about people’s personal lives.
"Yes," he answered truthfully.
"When your girlfriend is upset, how do you usually make her feel better?" Kevin asked seriously.
Drake’s eyes widened in surprise at Kevin’s unexpected question. Could it be that he had angered Jessie in some way?
"Just be honest. If it’s good, I’ll have the finance department increase your salary."
As the saying goes, money makes the world go round. Hearing that money was involved, Drake’s eyes lit up before he continued, "First, if you did something wrong, you must give a sincere apology. That’s a basic thing; it shows you realize your mistake. Then, buy gifts she likes as a form of compensation."
He continued earnestly. "Girls value emotional support the most. You must pay attention to her feelings and never lose patience."
Kevin nodded thoughtfully and waved his hand. "Okay, later tell the finance department to grant you a three-month bonus."
"Thank you, Mr. Harper!" Drake exclaimed excitedly.
You really get good money when you follow Mr. Harper.
Kevin had never bought gifts for a girl before and had no idea what Jessie liked. But generally, jewelry or accessories were probably safe bets.
With that in mind, he suddenly changed his plan.
"Today, we won’t go to Harper Group, but to the mall."
The driver and Drake exchanged glances before agreeing. It was the first time they saw their workaholic boss willing to skip work. It seemed like Jessie couldn’t be underestimated.
Adam was on his way to Harper Group, not having had enough sleep and munching on some toast, when Kevin called again. Although puzzled, he answered.
"What’s up? Need something else?"
"I’m not going to Harper Group today. Take care of things at the company. If there’s anything urgent, call me."
Upon hearing this, Adam pulled the toast from his mouth and swore, "Kevin, are you even human? Did you know I didn’t get enough sleep last night, but I’m already on my way to work so early in the morning? Despite that, you’re saying you won’t come?"
He was really tired of this hectic job.
Kevin replied leisurely, "You don’t have a wife, so you wouldn’t understand. I need to buy gifts to make up with her. Otherwise, another man might take advantage of the situation."
Having said that, he didn’t wait for Adam to reply and hung up.
This left Adam to shout on the other end, "Is having a wife so special?!"
If he had known, he would’ve gotten married as well, so he could have a reason to skip work and see what Kevin would say to that.
However, he wasn’t in love with anyone yet and didn’t have plans to marry soon.
Oh well, off to work he went.
Kevin was considering booking a restaurant to take Jessie for dinner when he received a message from her.
[Are you free this evening? My mom wants to invite you for dinner.]
