Chapter 36: My Husband Took Me
The next morning, Jessie woke up and saw a message in the community group chat. It said that the management had already dealt with the streetlights behind the complex and would even send someone to patrol the area and drive away troublemakers to ensure the residents’ safety.
She was impressed. The harassment she faced happened just last night, and she didn’t expect the community’s management to act so quickly. This further proved how good the community was.
At the same time, Kevin had also finished washing up and glanced at a message from his bodyguard.
"Young Master, we have already contacted the Quiet River Community’s management. The issues have been resolved."
After replying with a simple "Okay," he opened the door and found Jessie already making breakfast in the kitchen.
She enjoyed the time spent cooking. Watching the ingredients transform into fragrant, mouthwatering dishes filled the kitchen with warmth, lifting her mood and momentarily washing away the bitterness of the night before.
Seeing her in a good mood, Kevin finally relaxed. After a brief hesitation, he greeted her.
"Good morning, Jessie."
He assumed she wouldn’t respond, but unexpectedly, she nodded. "Good morning, Mr. Harper. Breakfast will be ready soon. Please have a seat and wait a bit."
Relieved, he sat down. However, he couldn’t help but continue to carefully observe her expression.
"Is there anything I can help with?"
"No, just sit there," she replied, waving him off without even sparing a glance his way.
This left him wondering if she saw him as an incompetent man.
While he pondered this, she brought breakfast to the table and teasingly asked, "Mr. Harper, did you wake up silly? Why are you daydreaming?"
If she was still able to tease him this early in the morning, it seemed like her anger had subsided.
He shook his head and took a bite of the sandwich on his plate. Yesterday, in Jessie’s fury, he thought she might retaliate today by denying him breakfast or spicing it with mustard.
Fortunately, everything seemed normal.
Yet, her temper last night was truly daunting. However, it showed him a bit more about her personality.
In the future, if there were any misunderstandings between them, he would need to address them directly with her. Making sarcastic comments or sulking would only lead to an explosive confrontation.
Jessie’s temper flared up quickly, but it also faded just as fast. Overall, she was an admirable person.
It was his own pettiness that led to misunderstandings.
As she ate her breakfast quietly, her phone rang. Kevin quickly glanced over and saw the name "Steve" flash on the screen.
His love rival! He was calling someone else’s wife early in the morning—his intentions are clearly sinister!
With nothing to hide, Jessie answered the call in front of Kevin.
"Good morning. What’s up?"
Steve chuckled softly on the other line. "Aren’t you going to the shop today? I was worried those troublemakers from yesterday might bother you. Since the road I take to work passes by your shop, I thought I could give you a ride for safety."
His voice held a clear note of eagerness, hoping this would lead to some alone time with Jessie. Maybe they could even chat over a cup of coffee.
Unaware of Steve’s interest in her, Jessie considered him a kind college classmate and the boss of her good friend. However, she doubted that he actually took the same road she did to work and did not want to owe him favors. Just as she was about to decline, Kevin took her phone and abruptly hung up on him.
"What are you doing?" Jessie was somewhat angry, but her tone was more shocked than upset.
With a somber look, Kevin took another bite of his sandwich and said, "I’ll take you to the shop. You don’t need him. Since you were going to refuse anyway, I just hung up early."
Jessie found his behavior strange. Did he hang up on Steve just to say he would drive her to the store?
"Don’t you have work today? How do you have time to drive me?"
Kevin had mentioned being very busy before.
He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. Even if I’m late, it’s fine—my boss likes me a lot, and there are some tasks that only I can handle.”
As the president of the firm, there were indeed many tasks only he could do. And as for the boss, well, he was the boss himself.
Hearing that, Jessie didn’t refuse anymore. After all, riding in his car would spare her all the walking. Last night, her bike chain fell off on the way, and it needed repairs anyway, so transportation would be a bit inconvenient.
Jessie sent Steve a message in response.
[Sorry, my husband hung up the call just now. He said he will send me to the store. Thank you for your concern.]
Kevin had been secretly observing her message. Seeing the words "my husband," his lips curled into a grin as he finished the last bite of his sandwich.
Jessie was about to clear the table when her phone rang again. This time, there was no name, just an unfamiliar number.
Not being one to answer unknown calls, Jessie ignored it and left it to ring. But the caller was persistent, trying several more times.
Convinced the caller was genuinely seeking her out, Jessie finally answered.
A voice, both strange and familiar, came through the line.
"Jessie, it’s me."
"Who?" Jessie found it somewhat familiar but couldn’t pinpoint who it was.
"It’s your brother."
Jessie immediately frowned and retorted, "What nonsense are you talking about? My mom only has one biological daughter and a son. I’ve never had a brother. Don’t randomly claim family ties."
"Have you forgotten? I’m your cousin, Frankie Moore."
Hearing the name, she immediately recalled her father’s side of the family. Laura was an orphan; after her father passed away, they took advantage of Laura’s situation. Since she had no family and only had a daughter, they used that to seize her father’s inheritance. Even her so-called grandparents remained silent and even forced Laura to leave.
After that, Jessie no longer considered them her family, just some blood-related strangers.
But now that they were randomly calling, there must be something they wanted.
Her tone grew distant as she asked unpleasantly, "What do you want?"
Not only did they withhold any inheritance from her and Laura, but they also demanded payouts from Laura to completely sever ties after she began earning money. They even threatened to cause trouble at Jessie’s school.
Laura didn’t want her to be dragged into this problem, so she resolved it with money. Jessie was furious when she first learned about it, but she was too young to do anything. Now, things were different. If they dared to trouble her and Laura again, she would definitely find a way to fight back!
