Chapter 35: Clearing Up Misunderstandings
However, could Kevin really just suspect she was cheating on him the moment he saw her with Steve?
Wasn’t that just bullying?
She grabbed the bag from the sofa and threw it at Kevin with force. It was filled with books and magazines, hitting his chest rather painfully.
Kevin’s eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at Jessie. In all these years, no one had ever dared treat him this way.
"What are you doing?!" he asked, swallowing his pride.
Jessie gave a cold snort, stepping right in front of him before snapping in a stern voice.
"Mr. Harper, don’t you think that you deserved that after saying such things to me?
"I was just delivering items to the store today, and that’s why I took the back road in the Quiet River Community. Since you saw me with Steve, you should also know how dark it was then and how many thugs were around. I was almost harassed by a group of them, and it was Steve who showed up and saved me.
"I called you first, thinking you might have returned by then to ask for your help, but you didn’t even pick up the phone. Shouldn’t I thank someone else who helped me? Besides, I didn’t do anything with him beyond normal gratitude and interaction, yet in your eyes, you already thought I was cheating on you.
"Don’t think I’m being harsh. Your thoughts are your own problem and have nothing to do with me. Please don’t put your ideas on me. As that saying goes online, ’If your outlook is skewed, you will think others are, too.’ Perhaps the reason why you keep being suspicious of me is because you’ve done such things."
Jessie was so logical and composed that Kevin couldn’t even refute her words.
He did notice her calling him and initially thought she was checking his whereabouts. But to think she was seeking him for help...
He often went through that back road and naturally knew the thugs she mentioned were real.
"Mr. Harper, as you said before, we’re just a couple in name. If you are so dissatisfied with me, you could have chosen not to marry me in the first place. You even signed a contract as if worried I would take advantage of you. I’m not after your money, which is why I signed it without any complaints.
"As for leaving the house and car to me upon divorce, that was your suggestion. I didn’t say a word. I didn’t expect that in Mr. Harper’s mind, I would be so despicable and shameless. So would I be wronging you if I don’t take the car or house?"
She snorted coldly; she never expected anything from Kevin. Her initial agreement to marry him was mainly to move out and show Laura that she had a home, so that her mother would worry less.
If they did divorce later, she wouldn’t take anything that wasn’t rightfully hers.
Realizing he had misunderstood Jessie, Kevin’s cold demeanor softened as he even showed a hint of apology.
Seeing this, Jessie, who didn’t usually hold grudges, also softened her tone as she felt much better after venting out her anger.
"Mr. Harper, I really can’t understand. You say you won’t be jealous or have feelings for me, but your actions seem quite the opposite."
Kevin, for some reason, abruptly denied, "I don’t like you at all! How could I be jealous? That’s impossible!"
Hearing him repeatedly emphasize he didn’t like her, Jessie rolled her eyes and nodded in agreement.
"Yes, yes, I know you don’t like me. Rest assured, I don’t love you either and never even thought of having such feelings for you. We agreed from the start; it’s just a marriage of convenience. You don’t want Grandpa Harper to keep pushing you, and I don’t want my mom to worry about me, either."
"If you insist I’m a scheming woman, then yes, I do have motives—just for free housing. Although my store’s business is good, paying rent might be tough, especially with the current cost of living. Plus, having a car and house reassures my mom."
Hearing Jessie’s explanation, Kevin was momentarily speechless.
He could easily deny being in love with Jessie, but when she mentioned she had no feelings for him either, it was unexpectedly hard to accept.
As her anger subsided, she took a deep breath and said seriously, "Mr. Harper, let me say it again; I won’t ever cheat on you. Moreover, the agreement clearly states that after our divorce, both the car and the house will be mine. I only have to wait half a year before I get a car, a house, and some money. Why would I cheat when I already have someone decent?"
Being silent for a moment, Kevin lowered his head and apologized, "I’m sorry. I misunderstood you tonight, please forgive me."
Seeing his sincere apology, she nodded in acceptance before kindly advising, "Mr. Harper, you really should change this habit of being so suspicious of your partner. Otherwise, how will your future wife cope with that? Being constantly suspicious isn’t pleasant, you know?"
He retorted by instinct, "Why are you talking about the future? I don’t have someone I like, and I don’t plan on cheating or anything of the sort."
Jessie massaged her temples and explained, "Mr. Harper, have you forgotten? According to the agreement, we’re divorcing in half a year. Do you plan on living alone after our divorce?"
She couldn’t believe Kevin would do that, and Grandpa Harper wouldn’t agree even if he did.
The agreement mentioned that it would be a test to see if they could develop feelings for each other in six months. Although Jessie found Kevin quite reliable and meticulous, given today’s events, she wouldn’t want to grow fond of him.
Kevin fell silent. Seeing that the time was late, Jessie took her bag from the floor and turned to leave as she urged, "Alright. We’ve cleared things up, so let’s get some rest and respect each other’s boundaries."
Realizing she didn’t seem to care much about him, Kevin felt inexplicably annoyed, but he said nothing and went back to his room.
Noting his frustration as he left, Jessie made a face on purpose.
‘Whose problem is it if you’re sulking? You will be the only one feeling uncomfortable.’
