Chapter 37: Bloodsucking Relatives

"Grandpa and Grandma are getting old now and want to move to the city. We’ve already found a property in town. You and your mom haven’t visited them in years. Tomorrow, I’ll send you the address. You should pay the down payment first, and we will share the remaining monthly loan equally. .com

"The house is already renovated. Once you pay tomorrow, we’ll bring Grandpa and Grandma over. You won’t need to pay for any fuel expenses, but you will need to take care of their daily needs since we won’t be able to visit often."

Frankie had it all planned out, and Jessie’s face immediately darkened.

Back then, she was only a child. After her father died in a car accident and the insurance company had compensated a large sum, all of her cousins appeared to divide most of the compensation. The more absurd part was that her grandparents, instead of mourning their son who had just passed, schemed to get more money.

Laura knew they were a bunch of scoundrels, so she simply gave them 180,000 out of the 200,000 they got, considering it as future support for the grandparents. After that, they didn’t have to bear any responsibility. Those people agreed wholeheartedly, even signing and stamping a contract.

With the remaining 20,000, Laura took her to start a business. Yet, they claimed that the 180,000 was only future support, and they demanded the past fees too. Laura paid 100,000, emphasizing that their relationship was now completely severed.

Now, they were asking her to pay for a house they wanted out of the blue. Knowing how shameless they were, it was no surprise they would pull such a stunt.

Jessie retorted bluntly, "I was only six back then, and all of you already took my father’s insurance compensation to build new houses and buy new appliances. Don’t forget—we already signed and stamped our commitment to fully pay Grandpa and Grandma’s support. Later on, you forced my mom to pay another 100,000 to sever ties with you.

"Whether it’s Grandpa and Grandma who want a new house or you, you know the answer yourself. In any case, we won’t pay a single cent, so just give up!"

She hung up the phone furiously and immediately blocked Frankie’s number.

She couldn’t understand how anyone in this world could be so shameless.

Kevin, who had heard the whole conversation, seemed to understand why Laura was so important to Jessie. Raising a young child as a single mother wasn’t easy.

He didn’t know much about Jessie’s family, only that her father died in a car accident.

Seeing her upset, he got up to clear the dishes. "Take a break, I’ll handle this."

Upon hearing this, Jessie looked up in slight surprise as she watched him at the sink. She couldn’t help but ask, "Aren’t you curious about what I talked about on the call just now?"

He glanced at her nonchalantly. "If you want to talk about it, you will tell me naturally."

He actually wanted to ask her, but he was worried he might touch her raw nerve.

Jessie was amused by his response, propping her head on her hand as she looked at him. "I didn’t expect Mr. Harper to be so considerate in this regard."

Kevin’s body stiffened slightly, but he continued to wash the dishes.

"It’s no big deal; just some more relatives trying to suck my mom and me dry. They weren’t satisfied with the money before this, so now they’re trying to get more."

At this, Jessie’s face instantly turned to one of disgust.

"What do you plan to do now?"

She slammed the table in anger. "What else? Of course, I’m not going to let them have their way! My mom has always protected me, and now I’m going to protect her."

"You are quite bold," Kevin said while drying his hands.

He did not expect Jessie to have faced such things, deciding that he would find someone to look into it more deeply.

She raised an eyebrow. "Of course."

"I was still young when my father died in a car accident, and my mom is an orphan. Grandpa and Grandma have many children, so they didn’t care that they had lost a son. They were only fixated on the money, claiming they were worried my mom would remarry and take the money!

"My poor dad was a dutiful son all his life, only to find his parents cared more about those ungrateful wolves. And as they grew older, it’s like their brains stopped working as they were manipulated into fighting with my mom for money.

"Those people see us as easy targets. My mom, afraid they would keep pestering her, paid my grandparents’ support and even signed a contract. It caused quite a stir back then. Afterward, they fished out another 100,000 from my mom. We thought the matter was settled, and now they still have the nerve to call.

"They even took my dad’s savings from his work. My mom held onto his last words, where he told her that the money he saved is for me and he will not let those people keep it even if Grandpa and Grandma are gone."

Kevin listened and said seriously, "If you need anything, don’t hesitate to come to me; I know many people."

"Then I won’t stand on ceremony," Jessie replied without being polite.

Despite that, she wondered if she would still be around Kevin by then due to their potential divorce.

"Your mom is an orphan?" Kevin was surprised by the news.

She nodded, not hiding it. "My mom came out of an orphanage and was adopted. Her foster parents passed away after raising her, leaving her alone. Luckily, she’s strong-willed and never gives up. She worked hard and met my dad in a factory. After seeing that he was an honest and steady man, they got together.

"At first, my grandparents disapproved of her because she was an orphan. However, they eventually agreed thanks to my dad’s insistence. Life was good until the day he passed away; that was when everything changed."

Her eyes turned red as she spoke, defiantly looking up to hold back her tears.

Kevin handed her a tissue and comforted her, "There’s nothing wrong with crying."

She thanked him, wiping her tears as she continued, "Now my cousin just called me, asking me to pay for their house’s down payment. I know the prices here, and the down payment is at least over 500,000, plus they want me to help with the mortgage and take care of my grandparents. There’s no way I’m paying a cent."

Kevin nodded with a firm tone. "If you don’t want to give them money, then don’t. They’re like leeches. If you pay once, they will keep coming for more. Such greedy people are insatiable. Let them fend for themselves."

Kevin, having led the Harper Group for a long time, knew that some things should not be compromised.
