Chapter 34: He Locked the Door
Chapter 34: He Locked the Door
In order to avoid Jessie from discovering any clues, Kevin would usually have his driver take the hidden route from behind the Quiet River Community. He didn’t expect he would run into Jessie with another man there!
He originally wanted to call her to question her, but just as he was about to ask the bodyguard for his phone, he instantly dismissed the idea.
"Let’s go!" Kevin’s expression was gloomy, clearly in a bad mood.
At this moment, Jessie had no idea Kevin was watching from not far away. She bowed to Steve and said, "Thank you so much for today, Steve. I’ll definitely treat you to a meal when I get the chance. Maybe I’ll invite Lilian to join us."
"No need to wait for another day. How about tonight? I can take you to a famous French restaurant," Steve eagerly suggested, unable to hold back his thoughts.
She was slightly taken aback. Although she found his actions a bit too forward, she only smiled. "I don’t think tonight will work. Besides, Lilian should be home by now."
"Can’t it just be the two of us?" Steve mumbled under his breath.
Despite that, she didn’t catch what he said. When she asked again, he only shook his head.
"At least let me drive you back. It’s not safe this late at night," he insisted.
Initially planning to refuse, Jessie reconsidered due to the earlier incident and agreed.
When they reached her doorstep, Steve seemed reluctant to leave but eventually watched her go inside.
"Oh, by the way, Lilian already told me about that client issue the other day. I’m sorry."
"It’s no problem at all." Jessie waved her hand and turned to leave.
Her polite demeanor left Steve feeling somewhat unsatisfied, but he understood that she was now married.
Alas, he was too late.
Back home, Jessie took out her keys to unlock the door, only to realize it was locked from the inside.
She checked her phone and realized she was indeed back much later than usual. Did Kevin assume she had gone back to sleep and locked the door?
She took out her phone to call Kevin, but he had not even answered her previous call. She suspected that his phone might be on silent, so he did not hear it ringing.
Inside, Kevin had deliberately locked the door, though he couldn’t quite explain why. The thought of Steve and Jessie together made him uncomfortable and upset.
Even though Grandpa Harper always had the best eye for judging people, Kevin felt he had misjudged Jessie. She seemed to be distancing herself and preparing to leave him, thus why she was getting closer to Steve.
Such a calculating woman was terrifying!
When he saw Jessie’s call, he didn’t pick up and let it ring out, his expression darkening.
After several missed calls, he finally picked up his phone and observed that she had first called when she was with Steve, likely trying to figure out his whereabouts to avoid getting caught.
Having assumed her intentions, Kevin answered the phone with an unpleasant tone.
"What is it?"
Jessie didn’t know why his tone was so harsh, assuming he might be in a bad mood. She explained, "Mr. Harper, I’m at the door. It seems you’ve locked me out."
Hearing this, he replied with a sarcastic sneer. "So, you did come home after all. I thought you were planning on staying out."
Jessie had no idea why he was saying such things, feeling it was quite baffling. She had not done anything wrong, had she? Even if he was in a bad mood, why take it out on her?
"Mr. Harper, I can’t get in. Could you please unlock the door?"
She had no intention of arguing with him; getting inside was her priority.
But Kevin stayed silent, which annoyed Jessie. She retorted, "Fine, since Mr. Harper is so unwilling to let me in and suggests I stay out, I wouldn’t want to disappoint you. Thanks to that bank card you gave me, I can certainly splurge at a luxury hotel!"
Unsurprisingly, to her expectations, Kevin couldn’t stay still upon hearing that. Footsteps soon approached the door before it swung open. He gave her a cold glance before turning away, and Jessie seized the chance to lock the door behind her and watch his back.
"Mr. Harper! Wait!"
He didn’t know why she called him, but he stopped and turned to face her, although reluctantly.
Jessie threw her bag onto the sofa, clearly upset by Kevin’s attitude.
"Mr. Harper, what’s gotten into you tonight? Your words are dripping with anger towards me, and you even suggested I was planning to stay out after you locked me out of the house. I don’t understand why you’re acting this way. If you’re in a bad mood, deal with it on your own. If you’re annoyed with me, address it so we can resolve the issue.
"This is your property. If you want to lock me out in the future, just tell me and I will move out immediately!"
Kevin’s expression darkened as he turned to look at her, his icy gaze leaving shivers down her back.
"Who were you with tonight?"
Jessie paused, recalling her evening activities. Did he see her with Steve?
Realizing this, she grew more annoyed. So he saw someone else help her—not only did he fail to assist her, but he was even giving her attitude over it.
Her visible anger only deepened Kevin’s frown.
Shouldn’t he be the one upset? Why was she mad?
"Mr. Harper, did you see my calls?"
Kevin coldly replied, "I did. If it were to locate me while you were with another man, there’s no need for that. We’ve signed an agreement; it’s only for six months. Can’t you endure for that long? Are you looking for someone else already?
"Though I have no affection for you, we are legally married. I won’t tolerate being cheated on by my own wife!"
His lengthy speech boiled down to his inability to accept her being with Steve.
That was when Jessie realized he had only seen what happened afterward, not what led up to it.
