Chapter 30: You’re Jealous
Chapter 30: You’re Jealous
Grandpa Harper was comfortably lying on the sofa while eating a small cake. When he saw Kevin arriving, he didn’t show any awkwardness from being caught, but instead smiled.
"Oh dear, old age is catching up with me, and my memory is failing. I forgot Jessie brought me the cake and made you take an extra trip."
Kevin could easily see through Grandpa Harper’s lie. He was someone who could compete in international chess tournaments, and he was telling him he had forgotten something?
With a stern face, Kevin coldly said, "Grandpa, I’ve told you before that you don’t need to interfere in my matters with her. Moreover, your method of trying to make me jealous of her is rather childish."
After saying that, Kevin left directly, leaving Grandpa Harper to coldly huff while watching his back.
That brat was saying he would not be jealous now, but Grandpa Harper was waiting for him to regret it later.
After that, Kevin returned to the Quiet River Community at 7:30 PM.
Jessie had specifically left the door open for him and brought out the freshly-cooked meal from the kitchen. "Mr. Harper, you came back just in time. I just finished preparing dinner."
Seeing her busy figure in the kitchen, he couldn’t help but recall the daytime scene. When he first saw her sitting with another man, his initial reaction was to confront them.
Only after seeing Lilian emerge did his rationality return.
He was not like this before.
"Why did your friend bring a client to you?" Kevin sat down at the dining table.
Jessie was a little taken aback that he was still thinking about the earlier issue, but she still explained everything briefly.
"Lilian’s boss wanted her to host a client meeting. It was her first time, so she asked me for help. Does my café look that bad?"
She wasn’t sure if Kevin was looking down on her little café or if he thought she was cheating on him. Either way, she felt uncomfortable.
"No, I didn’t mean it like that..."
Realizing she had misunderstood, he quickly tried to explain. However, before he could finish, she interrupted him by placing down her cutlery heavily in front of him.
"Mr. Harper, you can rest assured. Although we’re only married by name now, I won’t cheat during the marriage. Besides, since we’re getting divorced in half a year anyway, I’m not desperate to find someone else right now."
Even though he had been the one to suggest it, hearing her say they would be divorced in six months still made Kevin uneasy.
After dinner, Jessie went to clean up the dishes while Kevin’s phone rang. It was Chris calling.
He glanced at Jessie’s back and quietly walked to the balcony to answer.
"Big Brother, are you alright today?"
Hearing this, Kevin frowned. "Chris, did you already know about Grandpa’s trick?"
Otherwise, why would he suddenly call to ask about it?
Chris chuckled as he scratched his head. "I was just concerned about you. What did you see today?"
"She was sitting with another man."
Chris was shocked. "Big Brother, are you sure you didn’t see it wrong? Sister-in-law isn’t that kind of person. Did you ask her clearly?"
"I did—it was her friend’s client. When I arrived, her friend was in the restroom, and she had an argument with that man. I ended up resolving it," Kevin said, rubbing his temples.
Chris let out a sigh of relief before scolding, "Big Brother, can’t you tell the full story first next time?"
He was scared into thinking Jessie had cheated on Kevin, but Jessie didn’t seem like that type of person at all.
"By the way, Big Brother, did you not get upset seeing that?" Chris’s voice was full of gossip.
He was curious if his cool, indifferent brother would feel uncomfortable seeing his wife with another man.
Kevin gritted his teeth as he replied sharply, "No! How could I be jealous because of that woman?"
At the time, he felt somewhat uncomfortable, but it wasn’t because of Jessie. After all, what man would be happy seeing such a scene?
Yes, that must be it.
He had no feelings for Jessie; he just felt embarrassed, that’s all.
Chris couldn’t help but laugh. "Big Brother, you really shouldn’t say some things so early. I think Grandpa is right; one day, you’ll fall for our sister-in-law. After all, she’s beautiful, has a great personality, and is a wonderful cook. I had some of her cakes today, and they were amazing!"
Hearing this, Kevin couldn’t help but think of the video Grandpa Harper sent him today, which showed Jessie working intently in the kitchen. Though he refused to admit it, he inwardly appreciated it. A woman dedicated to her work exuded an irresistible charm, like a bottomless black hole pulling him in. He had replayed the video countless times.
"Mr. Harper."
A pleasant voice echoed from behind him. He turned to see Jessie in her home attire.
"Sorry, I didn’t know you were on the phone," she said as she turned to leave.
Kevin ended his call with Chris and shook his head. "It’s all good. Anyway, we’ve finished talking, so what’s the matter?”
He wasn’t sure how long she had been standing behind him. However, since she said that, she probably did not hear his conversation with Chris, right?
Jessie brought over a bowl of tomato noodle soup, the aroma immediately enticing Kevin’s taste buds.
"I noticed you didn’t eat much tonight, so I made some noodles. Care to have some?"
Faced with the tempting food, Kevin didn’t refuse.
The combination of tomato and broth was sweet and sour. Paired with the noodles and eggs, Kevin found it delicious.
"Thank you for today," Jessie said softly.
Either way, he did help her out today.
"It’s nothing. You’re my wife, it’s my duty to help you," Kevin explained.
For some reason, hearing him acknowledge her as his wife made her feel a bit strange, but she only nodded.
The dining table fell silent for a moment before he spoke up again, "Did your friend’s boss come today?"
He recalled that the man named Steve was seemingly interested in Jessie.
"No, why?" Jessie was curious, unsure why he suddenly mentioned Steve.
"Nothing," he replied.
Since he didn’t elaborate, she didn’t ask further.
"Does it taste sour?"
"I wasn’t jealous!" Kevin reflexively countered.
She was surprised by his reaction, pointing to the bowl. "I was just asking if the tomatoes were sour..."
Realizing he had overreacted, Kevin fell silent.
This, in turn, made Jessie smile. Her lips curled up as she looked at him, resting her head on her hand. "Mr. Harper, you’ve been asking me about that café incident all day. Could it be that you’re jealous?"
