Chapter 31: You’re Affected

Kevin was clearly surprised by Jessie’s question, starting to cough fiercely as he clutched his chest. "Cough, cough, cough..."

Seeing this, Jessie quickly poured a glass of water and handed it to him, her face filled with remorse. "Oh my God, Mr. Harper, why are you choking? There’s no need to be so scared. Drink some water to calm down." fr\(e)ew(e)b.(n)o (v)(e)l.com

Kevin grabbed the glass and gulped it down, not forgetting to glare at her harshly.

She had the gall to ask why he was choking. Didn’t this woman know?

If she hadn’t suddenly asked that question, would he have reacted like this?

She scratched her head apologetically. "Sorry, Mr. Harper. I was just planning to tease you slightly—I didn’t expect you would react so strongly. It really scared me just now."

His face was flushed from the coughing as he gave her a cold glare. "I’m not jealous! I could never be jealous!"

Jessie shrugged and nodded in response. "Alright, alright, I get it."

She glanced at the clock. It was already very late, so she couldn’t help but yawn. "Mr. Harper, remember to wash the dishes later. I’m going to bed first—I have to go to the shop early tomorrow."

With that, she said goodnight and turned to head into her room.

Kevin watched her leave, feeling a bit frustrated inside as she seemingly did not care about him at all, and felt a bit frustrated inside.

He reflected on his reaction today. It seemed he did overreact a bit. In the past, he could always remain poker-faced no matter what he encountered, not letting anything affect his emotions. But when it came to Jessie, his rational pride seemed to vanish.

After tidying up the dishes, he thought for a moment before glancing at her room door. Then, he went out to Bryan’s place.

Seeing him arrive, Bryan rubbed his temple and said sternly, "No matter what happens today, we can’t drink alcohol!"

He still hadn’t forgotten the pain of the last hangover. His alcohol tolerance and recovery were nowhere near Kevin’s.

Kevin walked straight in and sat on the sofa, speaking in a cold voice, "I have a question for you."

"What is it?" Bryan crossed his arms, looking Kevin up and down.

After Kevin shared his confusion, Bryan couldn’t help but chuckle and pat his shoulder. "Who would have thought that you would end up like this one day?"

"What do you mean?" Kevin frowned, puzzled.

Bryan cleared his throat and explained, "You’ve got a thing for the girl."

Hearing this, Kevin immediately sat up on the sofa. His eyes were cold and fierce as he refuted, "Impossible!"

He didn’t even listen to the rest of what Bryan had to say and quickly left.

Bryan watched his retreating figure with a slight smile on his face, his tone helpless. "He was the one who came to ask my advice, but he’s the one who refuses to believe me."

He wasn’t in a hurry to catch up and explain, waiting instead for the day Kevin would face the truth.

He had a feeling Kevin would eventually come back to ask him the same question.

The next morning, Kevin could not sleep well the entire night. When he got up, the dark circles under his eyes startled Jessie.

"Mr. Harper, were you out stealing last night or something? Why do you look so bad?"

He replied it was nothing, but he was actually grumbling inside his heart that she was at fault. Otherwise, how could he not sleep well?

On the other hand, Jessie didn’t know what he was thinking and brought out the breakfast she had made, placing it in front of him. "I bought some Chinese dumplings at the supermarket and fried them. They should taste good with vinegar."

Hearing the word vinegar, Kevin immediately furrowed his brow. "I don’t like vinegar."

Jessie nodded. "Then just eat them like this; they should still taste good."

Watching her pull the dipping sauce away, Kevin’s tight brows finally relaxed.

After tidying up the table, she left. "Mr. Harper, I’m going now. Goodbye."

"Goodbye."

When Kevin finished showering and was preparing to leave, Jessie sent him a message.

[Mr. Harper, I forgot to take out the trash. Could you please do it?]

His eyes darkened as he glanced over at the few black trash bags by the door.

‘This woman sure does things carelessly.’

Despite his thoughts, he still went and willingly picked up the bags of trash.

Meanwhile, the bodyguards downstairs would always hide quickly whenever Jessie came down, afraid of being discovered by her. They only dared to peek out once she left.

Especially so for Drake, who had once escorted Kevin home. If Jessie caught sight of him, Kevin’s plan would likely be exposed, and then he’d be in big trouble.

A group of bodyguards waited downstairs for Kevin to appear. When they saw him come out holding trash bags, their expressions briefly froze.

In their minds, Kevin always had a noble and tall image. Looking at him now, dressed in a tailored suit and carrying trash bags, gave them a really strange feeling.

Kevin tossed the garbage into the bin and walked toward the bodyguards, noticing their stunned looks. His eyes turned cold as he spoke up sharply.

"What are you all looking at? Let’s move!"

Drake, at the forefront, snapped back to reality and quickly opened the car door for Kevin.

As for that beat-up pickup truck, the bodyguards always took turns driving it to the company garage before Kevin would then drive it back.

The car soon arrived at a luxury restaurant. Today, Kevin had a very important business deal to discuss.

The opposite party had arrived and stood up immediately, greeting him respectfully as he approached.

"President Harper."

Kevin’s expression was indifferent as he only nodded slightly, sitting down. The powerful aura that he exuded with every gesture made the other party break out in a cold sweat and quickly begin introducing the project.

Whenever it came to work, Kevin took everything very seriously. He was completely oblivious to a pair of eyes staring him down from a not-far-off corner.

Once the bodyguards noticed the suspicious individual, they subtly signaled to him. "Sir, there’s a suspicious person over there."

"Catch her," he ordered without even raising his head.

The other party was unaware of the situation until they saw Kevin’s bodyguards heading straight for their young lady, and they suddenly panicked.

"President Harper... this..."

As they spoke, Kevin’s guards had already brought Julia Rossi over in front of Kevin. However, she wasn’t intimidated in the slightest. Instead, she raised a confident smile and boldly met Kevin’s sharp gaze.

"Name." Kevin leaned back, his eyes piercing.

The employee beside her stood up to respond, apologizing with a bow. "I’m sorry, President Harper. This is the eldest daughter of the Rossi family, Julia Rossi. We apologize if she offended you in any way."

He used a handkerchief to wipe his brow, feeling pressured as he was caught between the issue between Kevin and Julia.

"Kevin Harper! Don’t you remember me?" Julia frowned, seemingly displeased that he didn’t remember her.
