Chapter 28: Matchmaking Games

Grandpa Harper waved his hand. “Jessie, don’t forget that you two are married. Kevin has always been distant by nature since childhood, but I believe if you make the first move, he won’t respond badly. Besides, I’m waiting to hold a great-grandchild.”

Jessie felt overwhelmed by the pressure. Having a great-grandchild wasn’t that simple.

“Grandpa, I really can’t. Whenever I see him, I don’t feel anything.” free.webn\ove(l)(.)c(o)m

She truly had no such thoughts. Even simply imagining kissing Kevin was enough to make her feel tormented.

Grandpa Harper was momentarily speechless. He remembered that during his own marriage, which was a business arrangement, neither he nor his wife had feelings at first. However, they developed profound feelings over time due to her proactive approach.

"Grandpa, don’t worry. Kevin and I haven’t been married that long, so there’s no need to rush. We can take it slowly."

After all, she only got married to ease Laura’s concerns in the first place.

Grandpa Harper agreed verbally, but he was extremely anxious inside. He had been so eager to bring about this marriage in the first place. He didn’t even ask Kevin’s mother for her opinion and directly made the two of them get a marriage certificate. When he first saw Jessie, he had already decided that she would be Kevin’s wife. If this marriage eventually failed, an old man like him would really lose a lot of face.

“Alright, Grandpa will listen to you both and take it slowly.”

With no other plans for the afternoon, Grandpa Harper simply stayed in Jessie’s store, occasionally chatting with her.

The more he talked with Jessie, the more he liked her.

He found it hard to believe that Kevin would not fall for such a wonderful girl like Jessie.

“Grandpa, I’ll make you a cup of coffee. Would you like some milk in it?”

“Just add a little.”

“Alright.”

While she went to make coffee, Grandpa Harper secretly took a picture of her focused expression and sent it to Kevin.

If he wasn’t willing to get to know her well, then he would ensure Kevin understood more about her.

The sunlight from outside poured over Jessie, outlining her with a golden edge. Her gentle features appeared peaceful and beautiful, making Grandpa Harper involuntarily smile as he sent the picture to Kevin.

After sitting for a while and sipping coffee, Jessie occasionally glanced toward the door out of slight curiosity. “Lilian still hasn’t come back? Didn’t she get picked up?”

Just as she finished speaking, she received a call from Lilian.

“Jessie, I will be there at five. This client is unbelievable—they asked me to meet up at three, but they made me wait for two hours. No way, I’m going to demand a raise from Steve when I get back!”

After comforting her for a bit, Jessie hung up and noticed Grandpa Harper about to leave, so she quickly called out to him.

“Grandpa, where are you going? Didn’t you work in a company when you were young? Maybe you could offer Lilian some advice. Besides, it’s almost seven; you should stay for dinner.”

Grandpa Harper waved it off with a smile. “No need, my second grandson specifically asked me to come back for dinner today. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t return. They’re on their way now, and it’s probably good to give Lilian some space to handle her business without me around—I’d only be in the way.”

Just then, the sound of a vehicle honking came from outside. Jessie stopped persuading and helped Grandpa Harper into the car.

“Hello, Sister-in-law. I’m here to take Grandpa home for dinner.”

Chris Harper greeted Jessie. Just so he could pick up Grandpa Harper, he specifically found a car from one of the house staff, opting for an inexpensive, beat-up pickup.

Jessie smiled back. “Be careful on the road. Grandpa, remember to call me when you get home. Oh, and here are some sweets from the shop. They won’t sell out today anyway, so take some home.”

She handed the box that had already been packed to Chris.

Chris, although not much of a sweet tooth, noticed Grandpa Harper’s interest and eagerness to try some of Jessie’s desserts after hearing praise about them.

“Thanks, Sister-in-law.” He accepted the package. After saying goodbye, Grandpa Harper examined the pickup truck and laughed. “Being able to find a vehicle like this on short notice, I can see your effort.”

Most of the family vehicles were luxury cars, and it was inconvenient to quickly buy a cheap one and make it look old.

“Of course. It’s important to play the part, and you even emphasized it; no slip-ups allowed.”

Chris’s smile widened at the thought. He didn’t oppose Kevin’s idea of pretending to be poor, but he was curious how he would act if he truly fell in love with Jessie and then had to admit his deception. Given her character, how would she react?

He looked forward to seeing his usually aloof brother humble himself in pursuing a wife.

On the other hand, Grandpa Harper kept himself busy by calling Kevin. Once connected, he promptly said, “Kevin, I visited Jessie’s shop today. The cake she made was quite good, but I forgot to bring some back. Could you go over and pick some up? She has already prepared it for me.”

Kevin’s eyebrow furrowed slightly. “Don’t we have a pastry chef at home? You could just request them to make whatever you want.”

Why go out of the way to Jessie’s store?

Grandpa Harper let out a soft snort. “Are you saying you won’t do what I ask just because I’m old now? I want the desserts from Jessie’s shop. I asked you to go, so just do it, or I’ll go off to the countryside to farm!”

Kevin shook his head helplessly. Grandpa Harper was getting more and more childish as he grew older. His grandma used to manage the old man, but since she passed away, he had been living more freely and even pressured him into getting a wife.

“Alright, alright. I’ll go, okay?”

Grandpa Harper ended the call with satisfaction. Chris, who didn’t understand a thing while driving the car, asked, “Grandpa, didn’t we already get a lot from Sister-in-law? Do you still want more? Aren’t you worried about cavities?”

Grandpa Harper clicked his tongue, tapping Chris’s head lightly with his cane. “What do you know? I have my reasons.”

Hearing this, Chris realized before laughing and shaking his head. “Grandpa, I never noticed your matchmaking skills before. Are you trying to create an opportunity between Brother and Sister-in-law?”

Grandpa Harper glared at him. “And you have some nerve to say all that. When are you going to bring a wife home for me to see? None of you let me take it easy!”

Chris immediately clammed up, focusing on driving.

He would just let Grandpa Harper play his matchmaking games with Steven instead; he would much rather stay out of it, even if he already suspected his peaceful days were numbered.
