Chapter 27: Grandpa’s Support
"Lilian, what brings you to the shop today?" Jessie hurriedly put down her phone and walked over to her with a smile.
Lilian sprawled across the table, looking exhausted as she complained, "It’s just my boss making me meet with clients on the weekend! And I have to find a good place for it. Where am I supposed to find one?"
After saying that, she rubbed her head in frustration.
Jessie looked around. "If you don’t mind, you can just bring the client here. Don’t underestimate my shop’s decor; I put it all together myself."
Whether it was for her home or the store, she had always enjoyed the process of creating something she loved with her own hands.
The only thing holding her back was high labor costs.
Lilian’s eyes lit up as she nodded eagerly. "You’re the best, Jessie! I was hoping you’d say that. No rush, though; there’s still time. I’ll rest here for a bit before meeting the client."
"Alright, you can wait here," Jessie said, taking a small piece of cake out of the refrigerator. "Here, try this and see how it tastes."
Known for being a foodie, Lilian had not planned to eat anything sweet in this hot weather. However, Jessie’s cake looked so cool and delicious that it tempted her.
"Jessie, this cake from the fridge is so good. It tastes just like ice cream!"
Jessie immediately shared her idea of making an ice cream cake, earning enthusiastic support from Lilian.
"When you develop it, I have to be the first to try!"
"Deal."
They exchanged smiles.
"Jessie."
A familiar voice echoed. They both looked at the store entrance, and Jessie was surprised as she hurried over to extend her welcome.
"Grandpa, what brings you here today? It’s so hot out, and you could get heatstroke!"
She quickly helped Grandpa Harper sit down and fetched another piece of cake from the fridge.
"Try this, Grandpa. I have not chilled it for a long time, so it won’t upset your stomach. It’s refreshing on a hot day."
Grandpa Harper nodded, liking Jessie more with every glance. He noted how similar the decor in this store was to Jessie’s home.
"Jessie, you open the shop on weekends, too? Is it not exhausting?"
Jessie waved her hand with a smile. "Not at all. The weekends are usually quiet, so it’s peaceful here. I’m thinking of making new products for the store—something different for the customers to try. After all, they will eventually get tired of eating the same old things."
He thought her words made sense, taking the fork she offered and tasting the cake. The chilled cake was just like ice cream, making his eyes light up.
"Jessie, ever since I tasted the dishes you cooked last time, I haven’t been able to forget them. I didn’t expect that not only are you good at cooking, but you’re also so skilled at making desserts."
Kevin was truly lucky. He always claimed that he wanted to test Jessie, but Grandpa Harper was convinced Kevin would eventually fall for her.
"Jessie, this cake is excellent. Pack some for me next time. I’ll have my friends try it, so they will also come buy from you."
"No need. I’m already busy enough here, Grandpa. If you want some, just call me, and I’ll have Kevin bring it to you."
Lilian came over, nodding to Grandpa Harper. "Hello, Grandpa. I’m Jessie’s good friend, Lilian."
Grandpa Harper scanned Lilian head to toe, a smile spreading on his face. "Very nice. Is this shop run by both of you?"
Lilian shook her head, explaining, "No, I’m here because I’m meeting a client at Jessie’s shop for some business discussions."
"A male client?" Grandpa Harper inquired with raised eyebrows.
Unsure why he was asking about the gender, Lilian only nodded truthfully. "Yes, a male client."
Hearing this, a gleam appeared in Grandpa Harper’s eyes as he nodded with satisfaction. "Both of you are doing well in your careers; it’s impressive. Working on weekends is tough."
Lilian pulled a face. "Grandpa, you really have no idea. I’d rather meet clients like this. Ever since my mom found out Jessie got married, she has been introducing guys to me left and right as if I would never find a partner!"
"Parents only want you to settle down soon. Like my grandsons, all of them make me worried. Fortunately, my eldest got lucky and married Jessie," Grandpa Harper said, patting Jessie’s hand.
"Oh, time flew by so fast. I have to go now. Bye, Jessie and Grandpa."
Lilian quickly grabbed her bag and dashed outside.
At this moment, Grandpa Harper fished out a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Jessie.
After what happened with Kevin, Jessie thought it was going to be another agreement. However, noticing Grandpa Harper’s different expression, she opened it to find Kevin’s likes and habits listed down.
"Grandpa, what is this...?" Jessie asked, puzzled.
He smiled. "Jessie, don’t say Grandpa never helped. These are Kevin’s preferences and daily habits. Look them over. I know you both rushed into marriage without much emotion, but aren’t there cases of love following marriage online? If you two communicate and understand each other better, I believe you can make it last."
She nodded, but she only briefly glanced through the list. She had not forgotten how Kevin had asked her to sign an agreement. He was so guarded against her and kept his distance.
Moreover, they were going to get a divorce in half a year. Why spend time developing feelings?
Getting closer to Kevin did not matter to her, and since he did not want her to, she would not bother doing it.
"Kevin might be a bit stubborn sometimes, but he’s a good person." Grandpa Harper trusted his judgment. After much pushing, Kevin agreeing to marry was already a big step. Now, he hoped they would truly grow a relationship and live well together.
Jessie nodded, finding Kevin’s "stubbornness" manageable. After all, he had always considered her feelings and listened to her views.
"By the way, Jessie, have you two..."
Grandpa Harper didn’t finish, but his meaning was clear.
Jessie’s face turned red, shaking her head. "No."
She wouldn’t dare jump on Kevin, who had laid down rules against any physical intimacy.
"Grandpa, such things are still too..."
She barely even had any intimate contact with men. Now, Grandpa Harper was telling her to sleep with Kevin right away—even if she dared to do it, she wouldn’t have the slightest idea how. Where was that thing even supposed to go?
