Chapter 25: The Agreement

"What is it?" Jessie asked curiously, looking up to see Kevin’s slightly dissatisfied gaze.

He didn’t say a word, merely gesturing for her to look at the paper in his hand. He glanced at the snacks on the small table, his expression becoming more serious.

‘This woman actually has the time of day to snack here.’

There were a lot of words on the paper. She noticed that not only had he already signed the paper, but he had also left a fingerprint.

‘Is that some sort of a contract?’

She reached out to take it, leaning back on the small chair, and carefully read through everything.

The agreement contained many clauses. Jessie simply summarized the most important points. First, they were merely nominal spouses now, so no intimate actions could occur. In other words, Kevin would not share a bed with her even if she wanted to.

Another point was that if they didn’t develop any feelings for each other after half a year, Kevin would divorce her. However, the apartment would be transferred to her name, and she would not be kicked out.

There was even a clause written in red, forbidding her from eyeing Grandpa Harper’s savings.

There were multiple agreements, each one indicating Kevin’s wariness and fear of her deceiving him for money or affection. Apart from getting the apartment when they divorce, Jessie would not get anything else.

Kevin stared at Jessie as he coldly said, "We got married without any emotional foundation, so I believe this agreement is necessary so both sides will have their own responsibilities. But rest assured, I will follow through with what is written here. If we divorce, I’ll leave the apartment to you."

In essence, Kevin’s attitude summed up that she should not entertain any inappropriate thoughts.

Although his approach was not straightforward, Jessie could still understand. She nodded in response, "Don’t worry, I’ve never had my eyes on Grandpa’s properties. Besides, I can support myself. There’s no need to take advantage of Grandpa."

Jessie’s understanding of Grandpa Harper was limited. In her eyes, he was just a retired corporate elder living on a pension. She could earn money for herself, so why covet his properties?

Moreover, she did not think she earned any less than Grandpa Harper’s savings.

She had never thought of gaining without effort—neither in the past nor now.

Her marriage to Kevin was primarily a result of the difficulties she faced while staying at William’s place, and partly a means to ease Laura’s concern. From the start, she and Kevin had agreed that she would cover her own living expenses, keeping their finances entirely separate. They had no emotional ties—this kind of arrangement would spare them from any risk of heartbreak. fre.eweb novel\.c om

Jessie chuckled, glancing over at Kevin as she praised. "Mr. Harper’s looks and physique are top-notch, on par with movie stars. It’s hard for a woman not to be captivated by you."

At her words, Kevin’s eyes narrowed. However, she only smiled and changed her tone. "But, Mr. Harper, aren’t you a bit too confident? You are indeed an excellent man, but not everyone will fall for you. Take me, for instance. Rest assured, I would not develop any inappropriate feelings toward you or try to take advantage. As for the agreement, I don’t have any problem with it. I’ll sign it right now."

Kevin was more surprised by Jessie’s attitude. He expected her to be upset, but he did not anticipate her accepting the agreement so cheerfully.

He turned to watch her back as she went to get a pen. After returning, she signed her name on the paper without hesitation, leaving a fingerprint as well. There were two copies of the agreement, one for each person.

"All done." She wiped her fingers, tucking her copy of the agreement into her pocket before sitting back down to munch on the chips.

Her expression didn’t change at all, as if what happened just now did not seem to affect her mood. Seeing her nonchalant demeanor, Kevin felt a bit uncomfortable. However, he could not find the words to say anything. After all, he was the one who brought this agreement up, and Jessie had agreed without any amendments.

Seeing him standing there, she picked up the bag of chips and offered it to him.

"Mr. Harper, are you hungry? Would you like some?"

He looked intently into her eyes, but unfortunately, he couldn’t discern anything from her clear gaze.

"No, thanks. I don’t eat junk food," he replied, watching her enjoy the snack before gently adding, "You should eat less of these things. Fried foods can raise your cholesterol levels."

Jessie rolled her eyes and said with some exasperation, "If you’re not going to eat, please don’t ruin it for others."

With that, she took a deep breath, gazing out at the moonlit view.

"Just look at this lovely scenery. I’ve always wanted to sit alone on the balcony, enjoy the breeze, eat some snacks, and watch some shows. It’s pure bliss."

Her radiant smile took Kevin aback. Why did she seem so unaffected?

Could it be that he was overthinking it? Perhaps she had no ulterior motives at all. Otherwise, why was she so indifferent to the agreement?

Kevin didn’t say anything. He turned to grab his car keys and headed out. Jessie heard the door and curiously asked, "Mr. Harper, are you heading out this late?"

"Yeah, don’t worry about me."

She chuckled helplessly. "I wasn’t trying to; I was just asking."

Her response left him feeling even more uneasy. Before he left, he gave her a quick glance.

Tonight, he felt unusually stifled. He decided to drive over to Bryan’s place.

The entire way there, he was pondering why Jessie had that kind of reaction. He started all this, but why wasn’t she upset? Instead, she was seemingly indifferent and merrily snacked away.

What else did it mean? It was obvious Jessie did not care about him at all.

She made it clear that she didn’t like him and had no intention of doing anything inappropriate. She wasn’t interested in him, and she wasn’t about to force anything on him.

Despite his great qualities, why wouldn’t she be? fre ewebno(v)e\l.(c)om

At this thought, Kevin felt a flaw in his reasoning. Wasn’t this the outcome he wanted?

Since Jessie didn’t have any feelings for him, it would be easier for him to part with her later on. Otherwise, it would be a pain if she clung to him.

Yes, he was probably just overthinking. He just could not accept someone being so indifferent about this.
